“From Bars To Becoming”: Exploring Identity Change Across Prison Programming, Evan W. Saunders
“From Bars To Becoming”: Exploring Identity Change Across Prison Programming, Evan W. Saunders
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Self-identity plays a pivotal role in one’s day-to-day life, impacting their behaviors and ambitions, but what is conducive to a change in identity is often underdeveloped. Mechanisms that lead incarcerated individuals to both a shift in identity and desistance away from crime are both underdeveloped as well. The current study examines the impact of programming on identity and the relationship between identity and recidivism. A sample of individuals participating in a reentry prison program responded to 16 statements that evaluated their perceptions of their Overall Self-Identity, Current Self, Feared Self, and Positive Possible Self at the beginning and end of …
A Political Ecological Exploration Of The Caracol Road Project In Belize, Lorenzo A. Pantano
A Political Ecological Exploration Of The Caracol Road Project In Belize, Lorenzo A. Pantano
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Caracol Road Project is a new BZ$148,100,000 (US$74,050,000) road infrastructure development in the Cayo District of Belize and financed largely by foreign sovereign wealth funds. The areas adjacent to the road, broken into two phases include: communities, forest reserves, national parks, recreational areas, private lands and estates, and archaeological sites. This paper seeks to ask the questions: (i) For whom is the CRP being developed? (ii) For what is the CRP being developed? (iii) What visual evidence exists of sacrifice zones because of the production of the CRP? I sought to answer these questions through ethnographic observations, interviews, and …
Metabolic Insights Into Cyst Fluid Composition And The Role Of Taurine In Polycystic Kidney Disease, Vineetha Garimella
Metabolic Insights Into Cyst Fluid Composition And The Role Of Taurine In Polycystic Kidney Disease, Vineetha Garimella
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is the most common genetic disorder affecting kidneys and the fourth leading cause of kidney failure. It occurs in two major forms, autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD), and autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD). ADPKD is typically adult-onset and caused by mutations in the PKD1 and PKD2 genes, and ARPKD generally manifests in utero and is caused by mutations in the PKHD1 gene. Despite the severity of the disease, only one FDA-approved drug, tolvaptan, is currently available for ADPKD and remains under clinical investigation for ARPKD. However, its use is limited by adverse side effects including polyuria, polydipsia, and …
Oxygen Supply Capacity Of The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab,, Marty Sims
Oxygen Supply Capacity Of The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab,, Marty Sims
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, inhabits shallow bays and estuaries where it encounters variable oxygen levels. Moreover, each year, the biomedical industry harvests hemolymph from hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs to use in bacterial contamination testing, yet the effects of bloodletting on their physiology are relatively unknown. This study aims to determine the oxygen supply capacity of Limulus polyphemus in relation to environmental hypoxia and biomedical bloodletting. Study animals were collected from the intertidal waters of Tampa Bay, Florida. Experiments included a control group that did not undergo substantial blood-volume reduction and a treatment group from which 10% of …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) and other lung conditions are a key cause of the problems facing global health, as they greatly increase morbidity, death, and the financial burden. In order to achieve the third Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations, which is to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable illnesses by one-third by 2030, updated epidemiological statistics are crucial for directing prevention, control, and treatment measures. One of the major reasons of illness and death globally is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Lung damage and the emergence of CRDs, such as asthma, emphysema, COPD, and other respiratory disorders, are largely …
Fort Brooke After 200 Years: A Public Heritage Approach, Alex F. Fawbush
Fort Brooke After 200 Years: A Public Heritage Approach, Alex F. Fawbush
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fort Brooke, established in 1824 at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, shaped the growth of Tampa and Florida’s west coast for nearly sixty years and served as the nucleus for the forced removal of Indigenous people. Though the Fort itself has long since vanished beneath the modern city, archaeology has preserved its legacy. Excavations since the 1970s have uncovered rich assemblages of ceramics, glass, military equipment, faunal remains, and domestic refuse. These materials reveal daily life at the post, highlighting the interactions of soldiers, Seminoles, African Americans, white settlers, and Cuban fishermen, while also uncovering the deeper prehistoric, referred …

Proteomic Characterization Of The Neuronal Bin1 Interactome In Homeostatic And Alzheimer’S Disease Mouse Brains, Joseph Mcmillan
Proteomic Characterization Of The Neuronal Bin1 Interactome In Homeostatic And Alzheimer’S Disease Mouse Brains, Joseph Mcmillan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The gene BIN1 is the second-largest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD). It is expressed in neurons and glia in the brain as cell-type specific and ubiquitous isoforms. BIN1 is an adaptor protein that regulates membrane dynamics in many cell types. Previously, we reported that BIN1 predominantly localizes to presynaptic terminals in neurons and regulates presynaptic vesicular release. However, the function of neuronal BIN1 in relation to LOAD is not yet fully understood. A significant gap in the field is the unbiased characterization of neuronal BIN1-interacting proteins and proximal neighbors. To address this gap and help define the …

Feeding Niche Overlap And Segregation Among Three Grouse Species Wintering In Hudson Bay Lowlands Of Northern Ontario, Vernon G. Thomas
Ontario Birds
The Hudson Bay Lowlands of northern Ontario (comprising tundra and taiga) provide winter habitats for Willow Ptarmigan and Sharp-tailed Grouse as well as Rock Ptarmigan that occasionally fly in from arctic and subarctic regions. Winter food niche segregation/overlap was measured among these three species to investigate potential feeding competition; tamarack and berries were quantified by number and mass in the crops of grouse collected from the vicinity of the former community of Winisk, Ontario (now Peawanuck). All grouse species fed on birch and it was the principal food for Sharp-tailed Grouse. Willow was eaten primarily by Willow and Rock Ptarmigan. …

A novel method of measuring endocochlear potential and cochlear function in a patient is presented. The method uses nuclear imaging, such as PET or SPECT, with a radiotracer such as 201Tl to visualize any potassium ion loss in the cochlea of the patient which can contribute to auditory disorders such as hearing loss. This non-invasive technique represents a new method for auditory diagnoses by measurement of cochlear properties which can aid in the development of new therapeutics for auditory disorders.

Untangling The Roles Of Pulmonary Vagal Afferent Subsets With Inhaled Irritants, Teresa Darcey
Untangling The Roles Of Pulmonary Vagal Afferent Subsets With Inhaled Irritants, Teresa Darcey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The sensory nerves in the airways directly regulate critical defenses and indirectly regulate vital gas exchange. Airway function is largely controlled by the autonomic nervous system, and our understanding of its sensory regulation is directly connected to our ability to treat respiratory and cardiovascular pathologies. Airway sensory afferents are heterogeneous with respect to their electrophysiological properties, peptidergic capacity, and stimuli sensitivity, which at least in part dictate some of their various functions. There is evidence that embryological origin impacts reflex function: activation of the neural crest-derived population of sensory afferents has been shown to evoke the cough reflex whereas activation …

Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) is a critical transcription factor that regulates cell growth, survival and immune responses. It is implicated in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), the most prevalent form of lung cancer categorized by aggressive tumour progression and high metastatic potential. NSCLC’s aggressiveness stems from the overactivation of STAT3, promoting cancer cell proliferation, survival, and invasion through mechanisms including genetic mutations, cytokine signalling and inflammatory pathways within the tumour microenvironment. This heightened STAT3 activity not only supports tumour growth but also suppresses anti-tumour immune responses and fosters an immunosuppressive environment. Currently, treatment for NSCLC patients …

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by excessive amyloid beta(Aβ) plaque and tau protein tangles in the brain. While the exact cause of AD remains unclear, recent research implicates viral vectors, particularly Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1), in its progression. This review investigates how HSV-1 infection can contribute to the development and transmission of AD through viral mechanisms, including pathological amyloid beta and tau protein deposition. A systematic review of 30 peer reviewed articles from the past 10 years was conducted, focusing on HSV-1’s influence in AD, using databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar with …
The Role Of Body Shape And Size On Burst Swimming Performance In Marine Reef Fishes, Erica A. Molnar
The Role Of Body Shape And Size On Burst Swimming Performance In Marine Reef Fishes, Erica A. Molnar
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
One of the most important behaviors many animals possess is the ability to flee or escape from predators. In fishes, burst swimming is one of the most common strategies during a predation event. With such strong evolutionary pressure, it is noteworthy that reef fishes from the same habitat exhibit such a wide range in body and fin morphology. For the first time, studies focused on fast-start acceleration have been documented in the field, which offers a more realistic and comprehensive look at natural prey escape response to stimuli. With this level of understanding and observation of more realistic escape responses, …

Comparison Between Aunp And Tio2np Nanocarriers For The Treatment Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Andrew Thomas, Vedant Patel, Rohit Borra, Joy Yang
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the most fatal diseases in the world, leading to lung tissue damage and persistent inflammation. Patients with COPD are typically treated with a bronchodilator and steroids to alleviate bronchoconstriction and inflammation; however, the steroids have limited effects. Inhaled nanomedicine utilizes small agents that facilitate pulmonary-targeted delivery, which improves the absorption and potency of the medication. Over a century ago, Paul Ehrlich proposed the 'magic bullet' theory—targeting diseases precisely while minimizing side effects. Recently, nanomedicine has emerged to support Ehrlich’s theory by fostering nanoparticle drug delivery systems, such as gold (AuNPs) and titanium …

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) regulate metabolism and transmit appetite cues throughout the brain and digestive system. Binding to GPCRs, ghrelin, and GLP-1 are ligands that influence hunger, energy balance, and insulin secretion. Understanding the relationship between GPCRs and ligands such as ghrelin and GLP-1 offers critical insights into treating metabolic disorders such as obesity, a growing issue in America. Our methodology involved a literature review using USF, NIH, and JSTOR databases. Search terms like “GPCR obesity,” “GLP-1 obesity,” and related keywords identified articles from 2000 onward, yielding 59 studies on GLP-1 and ghrelin in obesity. GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), initially …

Disclosed herein is a series of helical sulfono-γ-AApeptides that mimic the binding mode of the α-helical HD2 domain of B-Cell Lymphoma 9 (BCL9). As disclosed herein, sulfono-γ-AApeptides can structurally and functionally mimic the α-helical domain of BCL9, and selectively disrupt β-catenin/BCL9 PPIs with even higher potency. More intriguingly, these sulfono-γ-AApeptides can enter cancer cells, bind with β-catenin and disrupt β-catenin/BCL PPI, and exhibit excellent cellular activity, which is much more potent than the BCL9 peptide. Furthermore, enzymatic stability studies demonstrated the remarkable stability of the helical sulfono-γ-AApeptides, with no degradation in the presence of pronase for 24 h, augmenting their …
