Promoting Undergraduate Research Through Integrative Learning, Elise C. Lewis
Faculty Publications
Educators in higher education often seek innovative pedagogies to include in their classrooms. This article describes an integrative learning experience and details the planning, implementation, considerations, and benefits of creating a major-specific undergraduate research day. The event created an opportunity for students to gain confidence and practice discussing their work during research poster presentations. The event also allowed them to integrate classroom activities and extracurricular experiences to make meaningful connections. Old Habits: Sister Bernadette And The Potential Revival Of Sentence Diagramming In Written Legal Advocacy, Lisa A. Eichhorn
Old Habits: Sister Bernadette And The Potential Revival Of Sentence Diagramming In Written Legal Advocacy, Lisa A. Eichhorn
Faculty Publications
Given the rise of e-filing and of software that makes it easier than ever to create images and insert them into documents, the nearly lost art of sentence diagramming may be due for a revival in written legal advocacy. This article posits that while sentence diagrams can indeed, in a limited set of cases, add to the persuasive force of a statutory-interpretation argument, the diagrams themselves are less compelling than attorneys may believe them to be, and diagrams cannot elucidate all types of interpretive issues. Like an analogy, a sentence diagram can illustrate an argument aptly — or ineptly — …

Contemporary Environmental Imagery: An Analysis, Kira Nicole Koppel
Contemporary Environmental Imagery: An Analysis, Kira Nicole Koppel
Senior Theses
Imagery is a widely used method of communication. It contains phenomenal power in its ability to connect to an audience and convey ideas. Contemporary environmental imagery has been widely utilized by environmental advocacy organizations and those involved in the modern environmental movement. These types of imagery are used as a call to action, for eco-tourism promotion, and in political campaigns, as can be seen in imagery distributed by New Zealand tourism companies and the South Carolina Conservation Voters. Historical images, particularly World War II propaganda and retro eco-tourism posters, have been reutilized to promote environmental messages. However, these images bring …

From The Multi To The Modal: Relations In Multimodal Composition, Sebastian Ivy
From The Multi To The Modal: Relations In Multimodal Composition, Sebastian Ivy
Theses and Dissertations
In response to the development of multimodal composition over the last twenty years, significant questions regarding its relationship to traditional composition and the discipline’s pedagogical practices have been posed. These questions are most often raised regarding the way that multimodal composition isolates media and modes, and is thus “tacked on” to composition courses. These concerns are primarily due to the way that multimodality has been theorized, which is usually rooted in the work of the New London Group. Developing a version of multimodal composition that can avoid both isolating its various parts and being tacked on to traditional concerns requires …

(Mascot) Nation: Examining University Engagement On College Football Teams’ Facebook Pages, Matthew J. Haught
Theses and Dissertations
In the sport of college football, engagement with fans drives revenue for the sports teams and the athletic department; the more fans buy, the more money the school gets. This study examines the ways college football teams use Facebook to engage their publics, and how that engagement builds a sense of community. Specifically, it explores six teams that represent new college football teams, midmajor teams, and state flagship institution teams. Ultimately, it seeks to explain how social media can be a force in establishing and maintaining an online community.

Mannequin Size On Consumers' Perception Of Self And Satisfaction With Fit, Amanda Cohen
Mannequin Size On Consumers' Perception Of Self And Satisfaction With Fit, Amanda Cohen
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the influencing factors that affect female's perceptions towards mannequins in retail environments. Data was collected using an online survey through the use of a snowball convenience technique. A total of 316 respondents were included. Using Pearson's r, the results indicated that the use of idealized mannequins in retail stores have a significant impact on social comparison, body dissatisfaction, and satisfaction of fit among female consumers. These results suggest that female consumers compare their bodies to those of mannequins and the larger the discrepancy between the size of the mannequin and the woman the more dissatisfied the woman …
