Research Manuscript Series

This report covers the archaeological investigations at site 38BU1834, which falls within the boundary of the Charlesfort/Santa Elena National Historic Landmark on Parris Island, South Carolina. Initial investigations involved a search for activity areas associated with the Spanish pottery kiln discovered in 1993 near the golf course clubhouse. Later work on the site focused on a pond or sinkhole containing a deposit of World War I era U. S. Marine Corps trash and the prehistoric period earth and shell mounds that line the periphery of the pond/sinkhole.

Indirect Earnings Management, Scott B. Jackson, Jason T. Rasso, Aaron F. Zimbleman Jan 2025

Indirect Earnings Management, Scott B. Jackson, Jason T. Rasso, Aaron F. Zimbleman

Faculty Publications

We hypothesize that managers use their hierarchical role as reviewers of accounting judgments and estimates to manage earnings, which we call indirect earnings management (IEM). Across a series of experiments using highly experienced financial executives as participants, we provide evidence that IEM (1) is likely used by managers to achieve current and future earnings targets, (2) reduces both cognitive dissonance associated with managing earnings and the extent to which managers think that their behaviors constitute earnings management, and (3) is more likely to be used when corporate governance is strong than when corporate governance is weak. The results of this …

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems continue to evolve rapidly. From the architecture perspective, it is evolving from large, monolithic models trained on massive internet data to complex, multi-component “compound” systems and “agentic” frameworks capable of semi-autonomous decision-making. These systems show immense promise yet face numerous challenges in reliability, consistency, transparency, and alignment with user goals. In this article, we propose Custom, Compact and Composite AI with Neurosymbolic (C3AN) approach, a framework that paves way to 4th-generation of AI that integrates data, knowledge, and human expertise to build robust, intelligent and trustworthy AI systems defined by 14 foundation elements.

Media Effects On Political Confidence In Autocratic Regimes, Makayla M. Stokes, Matthew Placek Jan 2025

Media Effects On Political Confidence In Autocratic Regimes, Makayla M. Stokes, Matthew Placek

University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal

In established autocracies, political control and support are integral to maintaining the regime. In an effort to do this, autocracies use media as a tool to persuade and manipulate public opinion in a favorable light. Negative media and messages are not tolerated as it threatens the legitimacy and continuation of the regime. The purpose of this study is to empirically evaluate the effects of social media and online news consumption on support for political institutions and overall satisfaction. This study will use hierarchical linear modeling to analyze data from the World Values Survey to test the hypothesis that social media …

A Dog Tail: To Trust Or Not To Trust, Victoria A. Denishchich, Christa C. Christ

University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal

Trust plays an important role in relationships and social functioning while also influencing communication, cooperation, and emotional well-being. Previous research has found that dogs enhance social relationships, approachability, and perceptions of safety and friendliness in everyday interactions. However, not much is known about how the effect dogs have on perceptions of trust applies when photographs are used. Such info is essential given the amount of online social interaction that occurs in society today. This current study examined whether the presence of a dog in a photo affects our trust levels in strangers. In Study 1, 74 participants viewed photos of …

The "Not Seen" Effect Of International Financial Centers: Innovation In The Global Financial Ecosystem, Charlotte Ku, Andrew P. Morriss

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

International Financial Centers (IFCs) are hubs of legal and financial innovation, developing specialized frameworks that facilitate cross-border investment, enhance global capital mobility, and support economic growth. Through jurisdictional competition, professional clustering, and adaptive regulatory frameworks, IFCs have pioneered legal structures that enable enterprises of all sizes to participate in the global economy. Using case studies of the International Business Company, the Limited Liability Company, the Protected Cell Company, and advances in trust law and applying the theoretical frameworks of social scientist Richard Florida and psychologist Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, this article illustrates how IFCs serve as laboratories for financial experimentation, generating widely …

Navigating The Seas Of History In International Law, Valentina Vadi Jan 2025

Navigating The Seas Of History In International Law, Valentina Vadi

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

Inquiries into questions of time, history, and international law have recently come to the fore. So far, however, many studies have only examined developments in international law from a temporally and thematically fragmented, brief, and narrow perspective. Due to international law’s growing normative and institutional fragmentation and emphasis on specific crises, episodes, and events, many analyses focus on transient trends and particular facets of international law. This study suggests an alternative to these constrained viewpoints: a thorough, multilayered, and broad perspective to questions of international law, drawing on Fernand Braudel’s tripartite theory of time.

Braudel’s theory of time provides valuable …

Lambat Asal Selamat: The Slow But Safe Twenty-Five Year Recalibration Of Personal Bankruptcy In Malaysia, Jason J. Kilborn

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

A popular Malay proverb advises, “[L]et it be slow, as long as it is safe” (biar lambat asal[kan] selamat),1 combining the sentiments of two similar English proverbs: “haste makes waste,” and “slow and steady wins the race.” These principles certainly seem to have guided Malaysian lawmakers in the quarter-century, multistage development of the most important element of modern bankruptcy law: the discharge. Adopted in 1967,2 Malaysian bankruptcy law has long included a very limited debt discharge, but as it left more and more economically debilitated debtors in perpetual bankruptcy limbo, policymakers became dissatisfied with leaving a huge and growing mass …

Implementation Of Uniform Competition Protocol In African States: Best Foot Forward In The Optimization Of The Afcfta, Ndubuisi Augustine Nwafor

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

Before the emergence of the Protocol to the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement on Competition (AfCFTA Competition Protocol), there was no unified competition framework to regulate the African Continental Free Trade Area. What existed was a fragmentation of regional competition frameworks created along regional economic ties, characterised by confusing overlaps and multiple memberships. In addition to the fragmented approach, Africa was not represented at the global level when leading competition institutions from other regions made decisions on anticompetitive conduct with worldwide implications. Adopted by the African Union (AU) in 2023, the AfCFTA Competition Protocol challenges the existing situation. It …

Studying Repeat Victimization: A Consideration Of Measurement Issues, Christi Metcalfe, Robert Brame, Tara E. Martin, Angela R. Gover Jan 2025

Studying Repeat Victimization: A Consideration Of Measurement Issues, Christi Metcalfe, Robert Brame, Tara E. Martin, Angela R. Gover

Faculty Publications

Decades of research have recognized the phenomenon of repeat victimization and its policy relevance. Although there are continuing efforts to explain the theoretical underpinnings of repeat victimization, there are still measurement-related issues that limit our understanding of the topic and ability to inform interventions, including varying operational definitions, data constraints, and sampling and nonsampling error. In this article, we review theoretical advances in the literature over the past decade, propose operationalizations that can foster greater consistency across studies, comprehensively assess the data constraints around commonly used public data sources to study repeat victimization, and empirically demonstrate how one of these …
