Limited By Body Habitus: An American Fat Story, Jennifer Renee Blevins Jan 2017

Limited By Body Habitus: An American Fat Story, Jennifer Renee Blevins

Theses and Dissertations

On March 24, 2010, my father walked into a hospital in North Carolina for an elective gastric bypass procedure; by Easter Sunday, it had become uncertain whether he would ever walk back out. Part memoir, part cultural analysis, Limited By Body Habitus: An American Fat Story traces the catastrophic consequences of my father’s botched gastric bypass surgery and examines the pervasive fat prejudice in the United States. As I tell the story of caring for my critically ill father while trying to navigate my complicated relationship with my mother, I wrestle with my own history of fat hatred. Additionally, I …

High School Science Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Effects Of One-To-One Computing Devices On Student Engagement, Herbert S. Bocchino Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The identified problem of practice for the present action research study centers on ways in which teacher-participants in a working class poor, rural, southern high school can use the iPads in daily science classroom activities to more effectively to engage these students in their classrooms and make the curriculum meaningful. Data in the form of classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and teacher in-service seminars was collected over a six week period. The results of the present action research study indicate a need for more professional development for incorporating iPads into science coursework for these teacher-participants at RHS despite their claim that …

Employee Responses To Pay Raises, Center For Executive Succession Jan 2017

Employee Responses To Pay Raises, Center For Executive Succession

Research Briefs

• Employees say that 10% is a minimum pay raise that will be meaningful. • However, pay raises in the 5%-8% pay range evoke positive attitudinal and performance responses among employees. • Small pay raises appear more likely to evoke feelings of unhappiness (as if it were a punishment) than feelings of appreciation or increased motivation.

Co-Creation Experience: Measurement Development And Influence On Value In Sharing Economy, Pei Zhang Jan 2017

Co-Creation Experience: Measurement Development And Influence On Value In Sharing Economy, Pei Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Since its introduction, an increasing attention has been paid to the scholarly discussion of value co-creation. One of the most essential problems in value co-creation is the development of comprehensive conceptualizations and measurement scales of value co-creation. However, most existing scales concentrate on co-creation behavior instead of co-creation experience and the development of a valid and reliable measurement scale of co-creation experience has been regarded as a top research priority. Meanwhile, the emergence of shared experience in tourism and hospitality has raised great attention from both academics and industry practitioners. Tourist shared experience such as participating in peer-to-peer accommodation inherently …

Ceo Selection: A Capital Perspective, Center For Executive Succession Jan 2017

Ceo Selection: A Capital Perspective, Center For Executive Succession

Research Briefs

• Chairpersons focus on human capital, psychological capital, and social capital as the critical skills when selecting a CEO. • Chairpersons identify leadership as the most important skill. The individualistic, go it alone “heroic” style that was once thought to represent leadership quality has been replaced by the ability to develop a team and delegate. • A key differentiator among candidates is the candidate’s ability to convey to the board, the senior leadership team, and the employees a credible strategic vision for the firm.

Pediatric Genetic Counselor Perspective On Serving The Foster Care Population And The Integration Of Genetic Information Within The Health Passport, Angela Rose Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory research study examines the foster care system's utility of a child's health passport and opportunities for improvement through an online survey of the pediatric genetic counselor population. First, counselor perspectives on serving foster children were gathered and summarized into themes. Major elements and/or obstacles of counseling the …

An Evidence-Based Process Change To Improve Mammography Adherence, Tara E. Smalls

Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is a significant disease—affecting 12% of American women in a lifetime. Breast cancer costs $180 billion annually in healthcare expenditures and productivity. Mammography has been identified as the greatest tool to mitigate morbidity, yet in many organizations, mammography compliance rates are decreasing. Inmate Time Utilization And Well-Being, Mateja Vuk Jan 2017

Inmate Time Utilization And Well-Being, Mateja Vuk

Theses and Dissertations

Qualitative studies about prison culture and examinations of correctional recreation and programming offer a comprehensive understanding of prisons’ social dynamics, including how individuals spend their free time while incarcerated. Theoretical models and the extant research suggest that involvement in structured and prosocial activities is associated with positive behavioral and emotional outcomes in offenders. However, the majority of studies that provide the empirical evidence for these conclusions do not examine all aspects of time utilization explicitly or do not provide statistical evidence of the strength and significance of the associations. Additionally, many of these investigations are dated.

To address these gaps, …
