Knowledge And Awareness Of Human Papillomavirus Among College Students In South Carolina, Salima Kasymova, Sayward Harrison, Caroline Pascal

Faculty Publications

Despite the existence of a safe and effective vaccine, human papillomavirus (HPV) remains prevalent in the United States, with late adolescence and early adulthood being periods of increased risk. Thus, targeting college-aged individuals for HPV prevention and vaccination promotion is critical—particularly in regions such as the Deep South where vaccination rates remain low. This study sought to examine awareness and knowledge of HPV as well as experiences and attitudes regarding HPV vaccination among college students in the Deep South. Specifically, we completed a cross-sectional survey of 256 undergraduate students from a large public university in South Carolina. Although a majority …

The Effect Of Trending World Events On Sentiment Analysis And Relevance Intervals Using Data Analytics Software On Twitter Data, Bridgette Ravindra Jan 2019

The Effect Of Trending World Events On Sentiment Analysis And Relevance Intervals Using Data Analytics Software On Twitter Data, Bridgette Ravindra

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Data analytics is emerging as a critical field to intelligently utilize the vast trail of data we create in our daily lives. An analysis of data trends can reveal patterns that can predict human behavior in areas such as health care, Ecommerce and consumerism, among others. The purpose of this experiment was to study the correlation between a Twitter hashtag’s sentiment and its trending duration using IBM Watson Analytics. The hypothesis was that a major event associated with a more positive sentiment would trend longer than more negatively associated counterparts. The experiment relates to Hedonic adaptation, the psychological theory that …

The Discrimination Presumption, Joseph Seiner Jan 2019

The Discrimination Presumption, Joseph Seiner

Faculty Publications

Employment discrimination is a fact in our society. Scientific studies continue to show that employer misconduct in the workplace is pervasive. This social science research is further supported by governmental data and litigation statistics. Even in the face of this evidence, however, it has never been more difficult to successfully bring a claim of employment discrimination. After the Supreme Court’s controversial decisions in Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly, 550 U.S. 544 (2007), and Ashcroft v. Iqbal, 556 U.S. 662 (2009), all civil litigants must sufficiently plead enough facts to give rise to a plausible claim. Empirical studies show that this …

Harassment, Technology, And The Modern Worker, Joseph Seiner

Faculty Publications

This symposium paper explores why sex discrimination is so prevalent in the technology sector workplace. This paper further examines what can be done to address these problems, and how employers can work to minimize the types of gender discrimination issues that currently exist in the modern economy. This ongoing issue must be examined much more closely by technology companies given the potential for this type of harm across the entire sector. There are many things that can be done to reduce this form of discrimination and to limit the potential liability for employers.

Ceo Sensitivity To Negative Media Coverage, Center For Executive Succession Jan 2019

Ceo Sensitivity To Negative Media Coverage, Center For Executive Succession

Research Briefs

CEOs’ individual psychology influences firm responses to stakeholder resistance, shaping future strategic actions. • CEOs respond differently to negative press coverage of acquisitions based on their tendency to focus on the past or the future - CEOs with a strong past focus spend less on future acquisitions after negative accounts. • CEOs respond more consistently to investor reactions to acquisition announcements, regardless of temporal focus.

Managing Mergers And Acquisitions: Perspectives From Human Resources, Brian Burgess, Stefan Wuorinen, Patrick M. Wright Jan 2019

Managing Mergers And Acquisitions: Perspectives From Human Resources, Brian Burgess, Stefan Wuorinen, Patrick M. Wright

Reports

Mergers & acquisitions (M&A) are common means for businesses to increase the scale and scope of their operations. However, research and practice suggest that a large percentage of acquisitions fail to meet their financial targets (Haleblian, Devers, McNamara, Carpenter, & Davison, 2009). While our understanding of when acquisitions are likely to succeed has improved, the lack of insider information has left researchers and practitioners with little insight into how to effectively navigate the most challenging processes in mergers – namely, assuaging potential human efficiency losses as members of the acquired firm lose the brand, leadership, policies, and practices that they …

In Search Of The Perfect Leader: Selecting The Next Ceo, Patrick M. Wright Jan 2019

In Search Of The Perfect Leader: Selecting The Next Ceo, Patrick M. Wright

Reports

Knowing how to choose new people for a company is a challenge that is never finished. Strategies for finding and choosing talent are as diverse as the pool of people available; and approaches to the task range from the primeval ‘gut instinct’, to a battery of personality, reasoning (verbal and numerical), and structured evaluations. When that ‘job’ is the role of CEO in, say, a major Fortune 500 company, the stakes are immense. A square peg in a round hole can quickly break a company; an inspired leader, on the other hand, can breathe new life into a drifting business …

Faculty Publications

Background

Antenatal care may be a means to reduce food insecurity in pregnancy and postpartum periods.

Objective

With the use of a cluster-randomized design, we tested whether participation in nutrition-focused antenatal care intending to improve household knowledge about the importance of nutrition for pregnant and lactating women and encourage allocation of household resources to ensure sufficient quality and quantity of foods, without providing food assistance, would reduce household food insecurity.

Methods

Alive & Thrive integrated nutrition interventions into an existing Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (MNCH) program in Bangladesh. The nutrition-focused MNCH package was delivered in 10 subdistricts through antenatal …

Multilayered Stigma And Vulnerabilities For Hiv Infection And Transmission: A Qualitative Study On Male Sex Workers In Zimbabwe, Elleen Yuk-Ha Tsang, Shan Qiao Ph.D., Jeffrey S. Wilkinson, Annis Lai-Chu Fung, Freddy Lipeleke, Xiaoming Li Ph.D. Jan 2019

Multilayered Stigma And Vulnerabilities For Hiv Infection And Transmission: A Qualitative Study On Male Sex Workers In Zimbabwe, Elleen Yuk-Ha Tsang, Shan Qiao Ph.D., Jeffrey S. Wilkinson, Annis Lai-Chu Fung, Freddy Lipeleke, Xiaoming Li Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

Male sex workers are marginalized in most societies due to intersectional stigma between prostitution and homosexuality. In Zimbabwe, a proliferation of male sex workers in major cities such as Harare and Bulawayo has been reported. However, there is a shortage of studies that explore their lives. The current qualitative study aims to describe the practices of sex work, life contexts, and HIV risks and vulnerabilities based on in-depth interviews among 15 male sex workers in Bulawayo. Our studies suggest that the stigma against male sex workers comes from diverse sectors including culture (“homosexuality is un-African, introduced by the Whites”), religion …

John Paul Ii's Theology Of The Body: The Human Person, Self-Gift, And The Sacramental Dimension Of Human Love, Mitchell Johansson Jan 2019

John Paul Ii's Theology Of The Body: The Human Person, Self-Gift, And The Sacramental Dimension Of Human Love, Mitchell Johansson

University Libraries Award for Undergraduate Research

This thesis is a philosophical defense of certain proposals John Paul II outlined and argued for in his work A Theology of the Body. The format of this thesis will be the following, arranged into four parts. In part one, I will give a very brief historical introduction to John Paul II and his work. Then I will sketch the philosophical matrix which the Theology of the Body enters, and introduce the synthetic methodology that John Paul II employs. The second part will elaborate and explain John Paul II’s metaphysics and phenomenology of the human person, the theological dimension of …

Dismantling The Master's House: Toward A Justice-Based Theory Of Community Economic Development, Etienne C. Toussaint Jan 2019

Dismantling The Master's House: Toward A Justice-Based Theory Of Community Economic Development, Etienne C. Toussaint

Faculty Publications

Since the end of the American Civil War, scholars have debated the efficacy of various models of community economic development, or CED. Historically, this debate has tracked one of two approaches: place-based models of CED, seeking to stimulate community development through market-driven economic growth programs, and people-based models of CED, focused on the removal of structural barriers to social and economic mobility that prevent human flourishing. More recently, scholars and policymakers have turned to a third model from the impact investing community — the social impact bond, or SIB. The SIB model of CED ostensibly finds a middle ground by …

Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction In A Collegiate Runner: A Case Report Of A Novel Therapy, Cody Inskeep, Todd Olin, Robert Arthur

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

A 23-year-old male Division I distance runner presented with several years of exertional stridor (high-pitched inspiratory noise caused by airflow obstruction), previously diagnosed as exercised-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO), a condition formerly known as vocal cord dysfunction and exercised-induced paradoxical vocal fold motion. Over the course of roughly 3 years, the patient had previously failed conventional and invasive respiratory therapies for EILO including respiratory retraining, inspiratory muscle training, reflux suppression, allergy suppression, amitriptyline, performance psychology, and injection of botulinum toxin to the larynx. At a referral center that specializes in the treatment of EILO, the patient's diagnosis was confirmed through the …

The Lived Experience Of Work And Career Among Individuals With Bipolar Disorder: A Phenomenological Study Of Discussion Forum Narratives, Susan R. Rathbun-Grubb Jan 2019

The Lived Experience Of Work And Career Among Individuals With Bipolar Disorder: A Phenomenological Study Of Discussion Forum Narratives, Susan R. Rathbun-Grubb

Faculty Publications

Individuals with invisible chronic illnesses are often at a disadvantage in the workplace in terms of job security, promotion, and occupational success. Because little is known about the use of public online support forums to help patients with mental health disorders cope with the impact their illness has on their work and career, this research identifies and examines online forum posts related to employment by contributors with bipolar disorder. Seven percent of the total eligible posts from four discussion forums (n = 7,712) contained mentions of work and career (n = 572). A thematic analysis of the 572 posts is …

A Comparative Study Of Perceptions And Use Of Google Scholar And Academic Library Discovery Systems, Mónica Colón-Aguirre, K. E. Oh

Faculty Publications

Google Scholar and academic library discovery systems are both popular resources among academic users for finding scholarly information. By conducting an online survey with 975 users from more than 20 public research universities across the United States, this study comparatively investigates how and why academic users use these two resources. Results show that the ways participants used both resources were similar, and both were perceived as highly accessibleand useful. Academic library discovery systems’ perceived comprehensiveness, subjective norm, loyalty, and intended use were higher than Google Scholar, while Google Scholar’s perceived ease of use, system quality, and satisfaction were higher than …

A Knowledge Lens: Humans In Action, Darin S. Freeburg

Faculty Publications

Every member of a social system sees that system in a particular way. This essay outlines a

new way of seeing the uniquely human characteristics in these systems, with particular attention to what happens when this view is taken. Termed the Knowledge Lens, this view embraces complexity, sees the potential of innovation through conversation, and understands the barriers limiting the traditionally assumed powers of data, information, and knowledge. This lens is approached within the context of ensuring that graduates of a Knowledge School are equipped with the tools and understanding necessary to facilitate positive change and increase human agency--both in …

‘A’ That’S Past Forget – Forgie’: National Drama And The Construction Of Scottish National Identity On The Nineteenth-Century Stage, Paula Sledzinska

Studies in Scottish Literature

Calcraft, this essay explores "how the conflicted Lowland and Highland traditions became incorporated into the new image of the nation," offering "a theatrical reflection of the dynamic process of identity building in the nineteenth-century Scotland."

Twilight Histories: The Waverley Novels And George Eliot’S Fictions Of The Recent Past, Camilla Cassidy

Studies in Scottish Literature

Discusses the influence of Scott's Waverley novels on George Eliot, as novels set in recent history, drawing on Eric Hobsbawm's idea of a "twilight zone between history and memory" to examine Eliot's Adam Bede and The Mill on the Floss, and to argue that Eliot in reworking Scott's reimagining of this recent-historical "time-lapse" articulates a psychological experience of historical transition and modernisation.
