Eudaimonic Happiness, Temperament, And Political Ideology, Anthony Walsh
Eudaimonic Happiness, Temperament, And Political Ideology, Anthony Walsh
Journal of Ideology
This article looks at eudaimonic happiness and political ideology seen in terms of liberalism and conservativism. It appears that these two ideologies are driven by different temperaments that have been broadly viewed as Platonic and Aristotelian. It is often said that Aristotle is the master of those who know as Plato is the master of those who dream. Temperament is composed of a number of sub-traits that are highly heritable which, separately and together, move us to perceive the world in certain ways and thus help to forge worldviews that are emotionally attractive to us. Liberalism/conservativism is also consistently found …

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and resultant restrictions on social gatherings significantly impacted many peoples' sense of social connectedness, defined as an individual's subjective sense of having close relationships with others. Older adults living in long-term care homes (LTCHs) experienced extreme restrictions on social gatherings, which negatively impacted their physical and mental health as well as the health and well-being of their family caregivers. Their experiences highlighted the need to reconceptualize social connectedness. In particular, the pandemic highlighted the need to explore novel ways to attain fulfilling relationships with others in the absence of physical gatherings such as through the use …

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that expectant and new mothers consult and value information gathered from digital technologies, such as pregnancy-specific mobile apps and social media platforms, to support their transition to parenting. Notably, this transitional context can be rich with profound physiological, psychological, and emotional fluctuation for women as they cope with the demands of new parenting and navigate the cultural expectations of "good motherhood." Given the ways in which digital technologies can both support and hinder women's perceptions of their parenting abilities, understanding expectant and new mothers' experiences using digital technologies and the tensions that may arise from such use …

From "Our Poor" To "Personal Responsibility": Changing Welfare Rhetoric In Political Party Platforms Of The Carolinas And The Nation, 1950-2005, Felicity N. Ropp
Senior Theses
In this thesis, I track political rhetoric surrounding poverty and welfare from 1950-2005. I first provide thorough context on the history of welfare policy in the United States and the way these issues were framed by politicians leading up to the period my data covers. My analysis centers on 108 political party platforms from the national Republican and Democratic parties and from state parties in North and South Carolina, ranging from 1950 to 2005 (31 of which I located in archives and manually digitized for the first time ever). I explain the significance of party platforms and review the literature …

Use Of A Palliative Care Trigger Tool In A Surgical-Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Courtney Thomas
Use Of A Palliative Care Trigger Tool In A Surgical-Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Courtney Thomas
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Patients are not habitually screened for palliative care consultations, and there is no protocol for initiating communication with palliative care. Not only is this a problem at the local and state level, but only about 5% of acute care patients nationally are estimated to utilize palliative care services. This delay in specialty care that palliative consultations could provide negatively impacts patients. Purpose: This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to determine if a palliative care trigger tool in an intensive care unit (ICU) would increase the number of palliative care consultations. Methods: A pre-implementation survey was distributed to ICU …
Integration Of Problem-Solving Therapy To Address Mental Health Needs Of Family Medicine Patients, Robert M. Sutter
Integration Of Problem-Solving Therapy To Address Mental Health Needs Of Family Medicine Patients, Robert M. Sutter
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Patients in Family Medicine at an academic medical center in the Southeast who show signs and symptoms of depression are being referred to behavioral health to manage their depression symptoms. Long waiting lists, which delay the patient’s time to see behavioral health and a lack of patient education about the need for mental health services led to delays in patient care and poor appointment adherence.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine if providing Problem Solving Therapy (PST) in a one-time setting, after referral from the primary care provider (PCP), with psychoeducation, decreases depression scores for …

A Response Team Approach To Reducing Restraint Use In The Emergency Department, Sarah Place
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Assaults on staff are doubling in the healthcare field, and due to the urgent need to secure the environment, the use of restrictive measures is at times, the safest choice. The following project examined the implementation of a Behavioral Emergency Response Team approach in an Emergency Department, and the effects it had, on reducing the use of violent restraints, assaults on staff, and increase confidence of staff in managing difficult situations. An anonymous survey was used to measure staff confidence while handling agitated patients, and an event report was used that identified if de-escalation techniques were employed to assist in …
Early Palliative Care Screening Among Solid Tumor Oncology Patients, Kaitlin Lothe
Early Palliative Care Screening Among Solid Tumor Oncology Patients, Kaitlin Lothe
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
While there are extensive benefits of integration of early palliative care, referral to this specialty tends to occur late in the disease course after some form of suffering has already occurred (Hausner et al., 2021). The purpose of this DNP student’s quality improvement project was to improve care coordination and increase rate of palliative care referrals of solid tumor oncology patients through implementation of an evidence-based trigger tool for palliative care screening. Participants were recruited from a 36-bed inpatient adult medical oncology unit where identified patients meeting criteria were included in the study. Data for this study included participant demographics, …
Implementation Of “The Pause” To Promote Clinician Wellness, Aishia Shonta Jennings
Implementation Of “The Pause” To Promote Clinician Wellness, Aishia Shonta Jennings
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Clinicians experience work-associated trauma after unsuccessful resuscitation efforts and may internalize the trauma unless it is addressed. The purpose of this DNP project was to conduct a pilot to determine whether “The Pause” is a practice that could be adopted throughout the organization to promote clinician well-being after patient resuscitation efforts, often called a “code blue” event. The model for this evidence-based practice change is the six-step Rosswurm and Larrabee (1999) model. Data analysis included six measures: the number of code blue events that occurred during the implementation period, the number of code blue events that were unsuccessful in patient …

Assessing Organizational Readiness For Evidence-Based Practice (Ebp) Change For The Implementation Of A Postoperative Neuropathic Mastalgia (Pnm) Scale Among General Surgery Ambulatory Practices, Jessica Terry Gonzalez
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Assessing postoperative neuropathic mastalgia (PNM) among oncology breast surgical patients is not commonly performed using a surgery specific pain scale at large South Carolina healthcare organization and is historically misdiagnosed, mismanaged, despite representing a common and significant complication (Gong et al., 2020; Humble et al., 2015; Mejdahl et al., 2019). Studies show that early identification of patients with neuropathic-specific pain following breast cancer-related surgery facilitates better pain management and patient outcomes (Pereira et al., 2017; Sipilä et al., 2012). Assessing organizational readiness to adopt Evidence-Based Practice change is recommended to facilitate the identification of potential barriers to implementation …

Increasing Hpv Vaccination Uptake In Female College Students Aged 18-26, Gabrielle B. Scott
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. Most people infected with HPV remain asymptomatic, but infections may result in several types of cancer. Three HPV vaccines are available with the recommended initiation of vaccination between 11–12 years, but the vaccine may be administered to females through 45 years old. Despite HPV vaccine efficacy, vaccination rates among college-age students remain low, particularly in certain geographical areas such as the Southeastern United States. This project aimed to increase HPV vaccination uptake among females between the ages of 18-26 in the Women’s Health Clinic through patient education …
