Effects Of Parenting And Self-Efficacy On Diet, Family Mealtime And Weight-Related Outcomes In African American Adolescents, Haylee Michele Loncar

Theses and Dissertations

Despite substantial research and concern, adolescent overweight and obesity continues to be a significant public health problem. Theory based on developmental literature emphasizes the role of adolescent self-regulatory factors, like self-efficacy, in health behavior engagement and weight-related outcomes. There is also extensive literature that highlights parents’ role in promoting self-regulatory development through warm and responsive behaviors and practices. However, few studies have considered longitudinal associations and changes in weight-related outcomes over time, as well as moderated effects by parenting. This study assessed longitudinal associations between adolescent self-efficacy parenting factors and adolescent BMI, diet, and family mealtime to fill gaps in …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Psychosocial Services And Perceived Supports For Pediatric Patients, Samantha Martinez Jul 2023

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Psychosocial Services And Perceived Supports For Pediatric Patients, Samantha Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

In March 2020, the World Health Organization named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) a global pandemic. While the physiological damage of COVID-19 on individuals and communities is itself immeasurable, both because variants continue to spread and because of the unpredictable nature of “long COVID,” we know even less about the long-term psychological impacts on individuals. Lockdown procedures, including school closures, were necessary to prevent transmission of the virus and to protect the most vulnerable bodies (namely, the elderly and immuno-compromised). However, the effect of the closures disproportionately resulted in psychological damage to children and adolescents. Previous studies have …

Chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) is defined as persistent pain lasting for more than three months due to conditions other than malignancy. This condition affects one in five American adults annually. The prescribing of opioids to individuals experiencing CNCP has been recognized as a critical contributor to the ongoing opioid crisis. In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) as a nonpharmacologic treatment to be used among adults with CNCP. Despite the potential benefits of CIH for pain relief, there may be a discrepancy between individuals with CNCP and their insurance coverage for …

The Effects Of Variations In Light And Nutrient Availability On Phytoplankton And Zooplankton, Jake Anthony Swanson Jul 2023

The Effects Of Variations In Light And Nutrient Availability On Phytoplankton And Zooplankton, Jake Anthony Swanson

Theses and Dissertations

Aquatic ecosystems experience a wide range of variation in resource availability; two of the resources that are most essential to phytoplankton and zooplankton are light and nutrients. Light can vary in both its color and intensity; these variations can directly impact phytoplankton by altering the amount and color of light available for photosynthesis. Nutrient variability, particularly increases in nutrient levels, also alter phytoplankton communities by favoring the growth of certain taxa such as cyanobacteria.

To understand whether phytoplankton respond differently to changes in light availability I investigated whether the diversification of cryptophytes, phytoplankton with diverse light-capturing pigments, showed evidence of …

Introduction: High-intensity exercise (HIE) can damage the musculotendon complex and impact the immune response, resulting in post-exercise inflammation. Sufficient rest and recovery will improve muscular resilience against future damaging bouts; however, HIE with minimal durations of rest is common in athletic competitions that facilitate persistent inflammation and immune dysregulation. Fucoidans are fucose-rich sulfated polysaccharides with demonstrated anti-inflammatory and pro-immune responses. Fucoidans may improve inflammation and immune responses, which may prove beneficial for individuals who regularly engage in repeated HIE. The research purpose was to investigate the safety and efficacy of fucoidans on inflammatory and immune markers following HIE. Methods: Eight …

In general, analysis of the data suggests much more promising and significant effects …

Local Translation And Focal Adhesions Are Dysregulated In Down Syndrome, Ashlyn Gotberg, Nikita Kirkise M.S., Kristy Welshhans Ph.D. Apr 2023

Local Translation And Focal Adhesions Are Dysregulated In Down Syndrome, Ashlyn Gotberg, Nikita Kirkise M.S., Kristy Welshhans Ph.D.

Senior Theses

During cellular migration, fibroblasts sense extracellular cues through membrane complexes at their leading edge and can respond to these cues via local translation. Local translation is the process in which mRNAs are transported to subcellular regions and translated in response to specific cues. There is evidence that local translation may be dysregulated in the neurodevelopmental disorder, Down syndrome, which is caused by the triplication of chromosome 21 and results in genome-wide dysregulation of protein expression. To determine if dysregulated local translation contributes to Down syndrome, we used three sets of primary fibroblasts from individuals with Down syndrome and apparently healthy …
