Neutron Interferometric Method To Provide Improved Constraints On Non-Newtonian Gravity At The Nanometer Scale, Geoffrey L. Greene, Vladimir Gudkov
Neutron Interferometric Method To Provide Improved Constraints On Non-Newtonian Gravity At The Nanometer Scale, Geoffrey L. Greene, Vladimir Gudkov
Faculty Publications
In recent years, an energetic experimental program has set quite stringent limits on a possible “non-1/r2” dependence on gravity at short length scales. This effort has been largely driven by the predictions of theories based on compactification of extra spatial dimensions. It is characteristic of many such theories that the strength and length scales of such anomalous gravity are not clearly determined from first principles. As a result, it is productive to extend the current limits the range and strength of such hypothetical interactions. As a heavy, neutral, and (almost) stable particle, the neutron provides an ideal probe …

Application Of The Empirical Mode Decomposition And Hilbert-Huang Transform To Seismic Reflection Data, Bradley M. Battista, Camelia C. Knapp, Tom Mcgee, Vaughn Goebel
Faculty Publications
Advancements in signal processing may allow for improved imaging and analysis of complex geologic targets found in seismic reflection data. A recent contribution to signal processing is the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) which combines with the Hilbert transform as the Hilbert- Huang transform (HHT). The EMD empirically reduces a time series to several subsignals, each of which is input to the same time-frequency environment via the Hilbert transform. The HHT allows for signals describing stochastic or astochastic processes to be analyzed using instantaneous attributes in the time-frequency domain. The HHT is applied herein to seismic reflection data to: (1) assess …

Experience Economy Strategies: Adding Value To Small Rural Businesses, Ann Marie Fiore, Linda Niehm, Haemoon Oh, Miyoung Jeong
Faculty Publications
Many Extension programs designed to enhance rural economic development have focused on development of value-added goods, particularly agricultural goods. The Experience Economy perspective suggests that economic development should also include value-added consumer experiences offered by an array of small rural businesses, such as retail, hospitality, tourism, and restaurant establishments. This article introduces Experience Economy strategies and elements of business offerings that create experiential value and provides a tool to help small business operators assess and enhance their experiential offerings that generate value for consumers.

Student Publications
This report is the product of a semester-long study for course 768, Problems in Library and Information Agency Administration at the University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science.
The purpose of this study was to do an in-depth analysis of the Reference Department at the University of South Carolina’s Thomas Cooper Library. A number of methods of factgathering were employed in the performance of this analysis, including:
• a literature review of the trends, changes and methods of evaluation for reference services nationwide;
• an investigation of the recent history, organization and leadership of Thomas Cooper Library …

Monograph Series
The African American Professors Program (AAPP) at the University of South Carolina is proud to publish the seventh edition of its annual monograph series. Furthermore, it is an honor to celebrate the remarkable tenth anniversary of AAPP through these manuscripts. The program recognizes the significance of offering its scholars a venue to engage actively in research and publish papers related thereto. Parallel with the publication of their refereed manuscripts is the opportunity to gain visibility among scholars throughout institutions worldwide.
Scholars who have contributed papers for this monograph are to be commended for adding this responsibility to their academic workload. …

Understanding The Personal And Clinical Utility Of Psychiatric Advance Directives: A Qualitative Perspective, Mimi M. Kim, Richard A. Van Dorn, Anna M. Scheyett, Eric E. Elbogen, Jeffrey W. Swanson, Marvin S. Swartz, Laura A. Mcdaniel
Faculty and Staff Publications
Psychiatric advance directives (PADs) are legal tools that allow competent individuals to declare preferences for future mental health treatment when they may not be capable of doing so as a result of a psychiatric crisis. PADs allow individuals to maintain self–determination during times when they are most vulnerable to loss of autonomy and in need of assistance to make their preferences known and honored. This article describes the content of twenty–eight open–ended, semi–structured qualitative interviews of adults with PADs who have experienced psychiatric crises. The qualitative analysis revealed three major themes from the interviews: (1) PADs as tools for empowerment …
