Class Size Determination And Decision Making In Lis Online Education, Lucy Santos Green, Kim M. Thompson, Nicole A. Cooke

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to develop a national landscape of the decisions made by LIS programs regarding online course enrollment caps. Online education expands learning opportunities for all students and is particularly attractive to nontraditional students who are more likely to have employment and family obligations that make attending traditional face-to-face classes difficult. At the same time, online learning can exacerbate existing opportunity gaps between certain student groups, depending on how well-prepared students are for online learning. This survey methodology study investigated course enrollment caps and the reasons behind the limits placed by Master of Library and Information …

From "Our Poor" To "Personal Responsibility": Changing Welfare Rhetoric In Political Party Platforms Of The Carolinas And The Nation, 1950-2005, Felicity N. Ropp

Senior Theses

In this thesis, I track political rhetoric surrounding poverty and welfare from 1950-2005. I first provide thorough context on the history of welfare policy in the United States and the way these issues were framed by politicians leading up to the period my data covers. My analysis centers on 108 political party platforms from the national Republican and Democratic parties and from state parties in North and South Carolina, ranging from 1950 to 2005 (31 of which I located in archives and manually digitized for the first time ever). I explain the significance of party platforms and review the literature …

The Unsung Heroes For Intercollegiate Athletics: Examining The Dialogic Principles Of Communication In Community College Athletic Departments, Matthew Alan Stilwell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore community college athletic departments and how they connect and facilitate messages to their stakeholders. With limited resources, it’s important to understand how the athletic departments are applying best strategies and principles of relational management. Therefore, the goal and importance of this project was to explore how a mass communication tool in Twitter and how it is used in community college athletics, an area that is not a focal point in either collegiate athletics or sport communication scholarship. Using Kent and Taylor’s (1998) dialogic principles of communication as a guide for this project, …

The Role Of Insulin Signaling In Controlling Oogenesis In Drosophila Melanogaster, Tancia W. Bradshaw Oct 2023

The Role Of Insulin Signaling In Controlling Oogenesis In Drosophila Melanogaster, Tancia W. Bradshaw

Theses and Dissertations

Adult stem cell activity responds to organismal nutrient status to maintain and support tissue homeostasis. Despite the intricate relationship between dietary input, adipose tissue and peripheral organ function, we are at the tip of the iceberg regarding our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying adipose communication to other tissues. The Drosophila ovary receives nutritional signals from the fat body with multiple nutrient-sensing pathways functioning in adipocytes to control distinct stages of oogenesis. Insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling (IIS) within adult adipocytes remotely controls oocyte production at distinct stages of oogenesis. The PI3K/Akt1 axis in adipocytes promotes germline stem cell …

Use Of A Palliative Care Trigger Tool In A Surgical-Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Courtney Thomas Oct 2023

Use Of A Palliative Care Trigger Tool In A Surgical-Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Courtney Thomas

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem Statement: Patients are not habitually screened for palliative care consultations, and there is no protocol for initiating communication with palliative care. Not only is this a problem at the local and state level, but only about 5% of acute care patients nationally are estimated to utilize palliative care services. This delay in specialty care that palliative consultations could provide negatively impacts patients. Purpose: This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to determine if a palliative care trigger tool in an intensive care unit (ICU) would increase the number of palliative care consultations. Methods: A pre-implementation survey was distributed to ICU …

Integration Of Problem-Solving Therapy To Address Mental Health Needs Of Family Medicine Patients, Robert M. Sutter Oct 2023

Improving The Discharge Process In A Post-Acute Care, Skilled Nursing Facility To Decrease Hospital Readmissions, Shantoria W. Parker Oct 2023

Improving The Discharge Process In A Post-Acute Care, Skilled Nursing Facility To Decrease Hospital Readmissions, Shantoria W. Parker

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem: Older adults recently discharged from a skilled nursing facility (SNF) (often referred to as short-stay facilities) experience a period of vulnerability while transitioning back into the community, placing them at increased risk of adverse events, including hospital readmissions (Anderson et al., 2021). Completing a timely appointment (within 7 days) with primary care providers following discharge into the community reduces patients’ risk of preventable hospital readmissions (RHI, 2023) through interventions aimed at promoting coordinated care and safe transitions (Patel et al., 2019). However, more than 50% of readmitted patients failed to visit a primary care provider's (PCP) office between SNF …

The purpose of this DNP student’s quality improvement project was to improve care coordination and increase rate of palliative care referrals of solid tumor oncology patients through implementation of an evidence-based trigger tool for palliative care screening. Participants were recruited from a 36-bed inpatient adult medical oncology unit where identified patients meeting criteria were included in the study. Data for this study included participant demographics, …

Implementation Of “The Pause” To Promote Clinician Wellness, Aishia Shonta Jennings Oct 2023

Implementation Of “The Pause” To Promote Clinician Wellness, Aishia Shonta Jennings

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Clinicians experience work-associated trauma after unsuccessful resuscitation efforts and may internalize the trauma unless it is addressed. The purpose of this DNP project was to conduct a pilot to determine whether “The Pause” is a practice that could be adopted throughout the organization to promote clinician well-being after patient resuscitation efforts, often called a “code blue” event. The model for this evidence-based practice change is the six-step Rosswurm and Larrabee (1999) model. Data analysis included six measures: the number of code blue events that occurred during the implementation period, the number of code blue events that were unsuccessful in patient …

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to decrease falls and decrease falls with injuries in this patient population. Methods: The project employed a pre-post intervention design that measured fall incidence in the targeted unit after …

Implementation Of A Nurse Driven Urinary Catheter Protocol: A Quality Improvement Project For Adult Patients, Jamie H. Dagenhart Oct 2023

Implementation Of A Nurse Driven Urinary Catheter Protocol: A Quality Improvement Project For Adult Patients, Jamie H. Dagenhart

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Introduction: Studies have shown a relationship between management and use of indwelling urinary catheters on catheter days and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), in adult patients in intensive care units (ICUs). Globally, increases in catheter days and CAUTI rates have led to poor patient outcomes, increased lengths of hospital stay, and increased hospital costs. In efforts to inhibit these adverse effects, institutions have developed protocols specific to reducing CAUTIs in hospitalized patients. This paper argues that a multifaceted nurse driven indwelling urinary catheter protocol will positively influence number of catheter days and change in practice, in the proposed institutional settings. …

"The Opium Of The People" - The Effects Of Soviet State Atheism On The Muslims Of Central Asia, Joshua Hughes

Senior Theses

This thesis explores the Soviet Union’s approach to Islam in the Central Asian republics of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan and the effects that these policies have had on believers following the collapse of the Soviet Union. As the first nation to adopt atheism as official policy, the Soviet Party-state employed many tactics to suppress Islam in the region through violence, propaganda, and strict control. Relying on existing literature written on the topic, I begin by offering a historical analysis of the attacks on Islam in the 1920s and 1930s. In an attempt to expand the scope of English-language …

Analyzing African American College Student Willingness To Participate In Clinical Trials, Caitlin B. Ulmer Oct 2023

Analyzing African American College Student Willingness To Participate In Clinical Trials, Caitlin B. Ulmer

Senior Theses

Previous studies regarding African American participation in clinical trials have found that African Americans participate at a significantly lower rate than other ethnic/racial groups. Scholars argue that this lack of participation in clinical trials is a direct result of historical trauma linked to unethical experiments and African American distrust in the healthcare system. However, there is a gap in the literature because these studies focus on African American individuals above the age of 30. This study aimed to fill the gap by examining clinical trial participation among African American college students within the ages 18 to 23. This study also …
