Freezing The Future: Elective Egg Freezing And The Limits Of The Medical Expense Deduction, Tessa R. Davis
Freezing The Future: Elective Egg Freezing And The Limits Of The Medical Expense Deduction, Tessa R. Davis

Section 213 of the Internal Revenue Code (the Code) allows a deduction for unreimbursed expenses for medical care. To qualify as medical care, an individual’s outlay must meet the statutory definition of “medical care” set forth in §213. Specifically, an outlay must be for care that is either for “the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, or for the purpose of affecting any structure or function of the body.” Many costs raise few interpretive challenges. When an individual receives chemotherapy, for example, the costs tied to that care clearly satisfy the disease prong of §213. But as medicine …
John Paul Ii's Theology Of The Body: The Human Person, Self-Gift, And The Sacramental Dimension Of Human Love, Mitchell Johansson
John Paul Ii's Theology Of The Body: The Human Person, Self-Gift, And The Sacramental Dimension Of Human Love, Mitchell Johansson
University Libraries Award for Undergraduate Research
This thesis is a philosophical defense of certain proposals John Paul II outlined and argued for in his work A Theology of the Body. The format of this thesis will be the following, arranged into four parts. In part one, I will give a very brief historical introduction to John Paul II and his work. Then I will sketch the philosophical matrix which the Theology of the Body enters, and introduce the synthetic methodology that John Paul II employs. The second part will elaborate and explain John Paul II’s metaphysics and phenomenology of the human person, the theological dimension of …

When Courts Should Ignore Statutory Text, Jesse M. Cross
When Courts Should Ignore Statutory Text, Jesse M. Cross
Faculty Publications
Statutory interpreters often rely upon a fundamental assumption: namely, that every word of a statute is meant to be read — and given legal force — by the courts. This assumption unites both textualists and intentionalists, and it has been invoked by Justices as diverse as Chief Justice Marshall, Justice Stevens, and Justice Scalia — the last of whom called it a “cardinal rule of statutory interpretation.” It underpins at least nine separate canons of statutory interpretation, and it even shapes how courts interpret legislative documents beyond statutes. It is difficult to imagine a more central assumption in statutory interpretation. …

Best Practices For Developing And Validating Scales For Health, Social, And Behavioral Research: A Primer, Godfred O. Boateng, Torsten B. Neilands, Edward A. Frongillo Jr., Hugo R. Melgar-Quiñonez, Sera L. Young

Scale development and validation are critical to much of the work in the health, social, and behavioral sciences. However, the constellation of techniques required for scale development and evaluation can be onerous, jargon-filled, unfamiliar, and resource-intensive. Further, it is often not a part of graduate training. Therefore, our goal was to concisely review the process of scale development in as straightforward a manner as possible, both to facilitate the development of new, valid, and reliable scales, and to help improve existing ones. To do this, we have created a primer for best practices for scale development in measuring complex phenomena. …

Domestic Workers In Hong Kong: Their Stories, Self-Perception, And Their Portrayal In Hong Kong And Filipino Media, Lauren Ernst
Domestic Workers In Hong Kong: Their Stories, Self-Perception, And Their Portrayal In Hong Kong And Filipino Media, Lauren Ernst
Senior Theses
Foreign domestic helpers are one of the most common and unique sights in current-day Hong Kong. On the weekdays, they can be seen walking dogs, taking children to school, and completing chores around the house. On Sundays, they flood the streets in full force, relaxing and taking advantage of their one day off a week. This population faces many challenges during their time in Hong Kong – these challenges are modern as well as historical and include financial, governmental, emotional, and social challenges. Along with the challenges of day to day life, they also face challenges in that their stories …

Emblematic Eating: Reading The Feasts Of The Iliad As Models For Social Order, Erin Welty
Emblematic Eating: Reading The Feasts Of The Iliad As Models For Social Order, Erin Welty
Senior Theses
This paper analyzes the Iliad’s feast scenes as sites that amplify the sociopolitical and economic tensions that permeate the wider plot of the epic. Through a literary analysis of the major feasting scenes of the Iliad, I show how the epic’s presentation of the dais collectively displays particular emblematic values of social equity and fair distribution of resources that manifests in the formulaic language that repeats in each feast scene and produces a sense of stable social organization. At the same time, however, I display how the narrative contexts of the feasts and the narrative presentation internal to …

Andale Pittsburgh: Results Of A Promotoraled, Home-Based Intervention To Promote A Healthy Weight In Latino Preschool Children, Sharon E. Taverno Ross, Bethany Barone Gibbs, Patricia I. Documet, Russell R. Pate
Faculty Publications
Background: Latino preschool children have higher rates of obesity than preschool children from other racial/ ethnic groups; however, few effective, culturally appropriate interventions exist targeting this group. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of a 10-week, promotora-mediated, home-based intervention to promote a healthy weight in Latino preschool children.
Methods: Trained promotoras (community health workers) delivered 10, 90-min weekly interactive and tailored sessions to Latino families living in Allegheny County. Participants were recruited through promotoras’ own social networks and community gatherings, flyers, and word of mouth. Primary outcome measures included child body mass index (BMI) z-score and …
