Exploring The Homeless Persons Perception Of Living In A Long-Term Care Facility, Janice Woods May 2019

Exploring The Homeless Persons Perception Of Living In A Long-Term Care Facility, Janice Woods

Dissertations

Objective:The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of homeless persons admitted to a nursing home facility. Originally, the study was to explore their understanding of and their experience with advance health care planning; coincidently, the participants were more open to their experience of living in a long-term care facility.

Method:A convenience sample of 13 participants (12 male, 1 female) at four long-term care facilities in Southern California were interviewed about their perception of advanced health care planning, including the physician’s orders for life sustaining treatment (POLST); a consent form required in all nursing homes. …

Older Adults’ Implementation Of Discharge Instructions Following An Acute Care Hospital Stay, Brenda Miller May 2019

Older Adults’ Implementation Of Discharge Instructions Following An Acute Care Hospital Stay, Brenda Miller

Dissertations

Discharge instructions are a self-care guide for patients after discharge from an acute care hospitalization. The discharge process starts on admission to the hospital and continues until discharged. Many patients rely on informal caregivers to provide support after a discharge. However, it is often unclear whether the patients or caregivers completely understand instructions provided during the discharge process. Key concepts related to how discharge instructions were implemented following discharge to home have been understudied from the patient’s and informal caregivers’ perspectives. Developing effective discharge instructions based on study findings may assist in reducing 30-day hospital readmission rates.

At UNC, approximately 40% of the undergraduate population is classified as first-generation. The UNC Libraries has partnered with the Center for Human Enrichment, which provides support for first-generation students through instruction, tutoring, and advising, to develop the Student Voices project. This innovative collaboration captures oral histories documenting the first-generation freshman …

Warranty Of Seaworthiness--A Non-Seaman's Dilemma, John M. Gantus Mar 2019

Warranty Of Seaworthiness--A Non-Seaman's Dilemma, John M. Gantus

San Diego Law Review

In Watz v. Zapata Off-Shore Co., Judge Wisdom presents a well-articulated discussion pointed directly at the unsettled issue of when a ship is "in navigation". The significance of the court's determination is that the question of fact presented in this case is a close one, emphasizing an area never thoroughly considered by the Supreme Court; an area in need of further illumination.

Recent Developments In The Law Of The Seas Ii: A Synopsis, John M. Gantus Mar 2019

Recent Developments In The Law Of The Seas Ii: A Synopsis, John M. Gantus

San Diego Law Review

The following materials are a compilation of events relevant to law of the seas that took place from March 15, 1970 to March 1, 1971. While it is fairly complete it is far from exhaustive, due to the lack of continuity and organization of source materials. Major sources include the New York Times, the Environmental Reporter, and the United States Code Congressional and Administrative News, as well as a little help from our friends. The format used is basically the same as that used last year when the first synopsis was published. For those of our readers who found the …

Foreword: Law Of The Sea Needs For The 1970'S, Daniel Wilkes Mar 2019

Foreword: Law Of The Sea Needs For The 1970'S, Daniel Wilkes

San Diego Law Review

These are exciting times for an ocean lawyer, for the Law of the Sea is in a period of reconstitution; simultaneously, the arena for remaking ocean law also could become the amphitheater for constitutive changes in our international system - or, as is predicted by a coterie of doomsayers, just another ring of an antedelvian circus. Looked at in this light, the following Law of the Seas Symposium can be judged, either by the degree to which its authors follow the "Rules of Play" for this constitutive period, or by the extent to which they meet the need for new …

Cultivating A Sense Of Critical Consciousness In Teacher Candidates Within A Community-Based Adult Esl Program, Sarina Chugani Molina Jan 2019

Cultivating A Sense Of Critical Consciousness In Teacher Candidates Within A Community-Based Adult Esl Program, Sarina Chugani Molina

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

As more teacher education programs commit to developing critically conscious educators, it has become increasingly important to provide teacher candidates with opportunities to engage in critical actions within authentic contexts. To this end, the TESOL program in partnership with community stakeholders instituted a language program, where candidates were provided opportunities to explore the role of advocacy in their work through engaging in iterative dialogic reflections with their students. This chapter illustrates how the candidates came to embrace their role as agentive forces that strived to contribute to the empowerment of their learners to advocate for themselves within their own communities.

Comparison Of School Characteristics Among Ramp And Non-Ramp Schools, Patrick R. Mullen, Nancy Chae, Adrienne Backer Jan 2019

Comparison Of School Characteristics Among Ramp And Non-Ramp Schools, Patrick R. Mullen, Nancy Chae, Adrienne Backer

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The Recognized American School Counselor Association Model Program (RAMP) designation aims to acknowledge school counselors who deliver comprehensive data-driven programs. However, there is little research to date that examines RAMP schools and associated factors with this designation. Therefore, we compared the characteristics of schools that earned the RAMP designation with a random sample of schools without this designation to examine if differences exist. Data was accessed using the Elementary/ Secondary Information System through the U.S. Department of Education. The results indicated that non-RAMP schools in this study were more likely to: (a) be eligible for Title I; (b) be located …
