First-Generation Commuter Student Experiences, Heena Lodhia
First-Generation Commuter Student Experiences, Heena Lodhia
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
Abstract
Studies have shown that first-generation commuter (FGC) students navigate their college experience differently in comparison to traditional, continuing generation students. One of the biggest distinctions is how first-generation (FG) students are closely tied to their familial identity. As these students come from an environment and mindset that is more collective and interdependent, they can struggle to find a sense of belonging, community, and support from their institution. By physically living off-campus, FG commuter student’s persistence, well-being, and ability to build relationships on campus can prove to be challenging. Therefore, as a Graduate Assistant in the Commuter Student Commons, I …
"It’S A Lot Of Work To Be Native": Using Storytelling To Examine The Needs Of Native American Students At The University Of San Diego, Kasandra Tong
"It’S A Lot Of Work To Be Native": Using Storytelling To Examine The Needs Of Native American Students At The University Of San Diego, Kasandra Tong
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The University of San Diego’s (USD) Race/Ethnicity Federal Reports show that for the last 17 years, the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native students at USD has not risen above 1% (University of San Diego, n.d.). This data requires further disaggregation because the current data only represents students that solely checked American Indian/Alaska Native and does not include students who identify as biracial or multi-racial. The purpose of my research was to identify what efforts are needed to improve the experience of Native American students at USD. My research question was what factors are needed to improve the existing experience of …

Doing More With Less: A Quantitative Analysis Of Mindfulness, Meditation, Sustainable Consumption Awareness And Practice Among University Undergraduates, Teresa Van Horn
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Climate change, overconsumption, air, and water pollution continue to be pressing issues for society. Given the significant impact of overconsumption, the search for strategies to promote more sustainable behavior has become a topic for investigation. Universities are uniquely positioned to help students work toward sustainable solutions. This research explored the role of mindfulness in university students' sustainable consumption awareness and practice as there are gaps in the literature concerning definitions, constructs, and research regarding mindfulness and sustainable consumption.
To address these disparities, this research used stepwise regression analysis to investigate the extent to which mindfulness and select demographic measures …
Personal Data Privacy And Protective Federal Legislation: An Exploration Of Constituent Position On The Need For Legislation To Control Data Reliant Organizations Collecting And Monetizing Internet-Obtained Personal Data, Giovanni De Meo
Dissertations
In the past twenty years, the business of online personal data collection has grown at the same rapid pace as the internet itself, fostering a multibillion-dollar personal data collection and commercialization industry. Unlike many other large industries, there has been no major federal legislation enacted to monitor or control the activities of organizations dealing in this flourishing industry. The combination of these factors together with the lack of prior research encouraged this research designed to understand how much voters know about this topic and whether there is interest in seeing legislation enacted to protect individual personal data privacy.
To address …
Reproducing The Status Quo In The Middle School English Classroom: A Critical Examination Of Literacy Learning Via Personalized Learning Technology, Michele Mcconnell
Reproducing The Status Quo In The Middle School English Classroom: A Critical Examination Of Literacy Learning Via Personalized Learning Technology, Michele Mcconnell
Dissertations
Personalized learning technology (PL Tech) is a growing educational reform movement supported by federal grant dollars. As a bourgeoning educational movement, no research has been conducted to explore the potential effects of such structures in supporting student literacy learning. Additionally, current education reform research often lacks the perspective of the students experiencing the reform. Therefore, this study sought to examine the lived experiences of middle school students using PL Tech to understand what structural and cultural arrangements influenced students’ literacy learning.
Portraiture, a qualitative methodology, was employed to conduct the study at a charter school in Fresno, California implementing PL …

A Qualitative Exploration Of The Patient Care Experience As Perceived By Hispanic Patients Receiving Care At A Safety-Net Facility, Silvinia Cuizon
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand how English- and Spanish-speaking Hispanic patients seeking kidney and liver transplant care at a safety-net facility perceive and interpret the care experience with the goal of generating a grounded theory model to guide care delivery and improve perception of care for this population.
Background/Rationale: The patient experience is the current federally mandated hospital quality indicator that measures the range of interactions patients have with their hospital admission, which has fiscal and clinical implications for the delivery of care. Many safety-net health care delivery systems, which primarily serve traditionally underserved populations, and …
The Action Is Listening: Undergraduate Women Of Color & Sense Of Belonging At Usd, Mayzong Lee
The Action Is Listening: Undergraduate Women Of Color & Sense Of Belonging At Usd, Mayzong Lee
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
At the intersection of gender and race, women of color (WOC) often lack holistic support in navigating their undergraduate experience at the University of San Diego (USD). My purpose in this action research was to understand how Women of Color define, experience, and navigate their sense of academic, social, and cultural belonging at USD beyond the data. Consisting of three cycles, this research asked participants to define each sense of belonging followed by an individual interview to share how they have experienced their own definition of belonging at USD. The last cycle of this research was an opportunity for participants …
Undocumented Students At The University Of San Diego: Using Testimonios As A Theoretical Framework To Understand Their Meaning-Making Process, Isela Reyes
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The purpose of this research was to understand how undergraduate undocumented students navigate the University of San Diego. My research questions are: How can I understand the meaning making process of undocumented students as they navigate the University of San Diego (USD)? How can I cooperate with undocumented students at USD to improve the support services for them? This research uses Kolb’s Learning Cycle and Testimonios to understand and engage with the participants as they navigate a predominantly white institution. The cycles include individual testimonios, and multi-testimonios to honor their immigration and undocumented identity. Students created an Ofrenda and a …

Pain Speaks For Itself: Divorcing The Eighth Amendment From The Spirit Of The Moment, Benjamin White
Pain Speaks For Itself: Divorcing The Eighth Amendment From The Spirit Of The Moment, Benjamin White
San Diego Law Review
This Comment will provide (1) the Eighth Amendment’s original meaning with regard to passive deprivations; (2) the Supreme Court’s shift from wanton and unnecessary infliction of pain to evolving standards of decency; (3) a critique of the evolving standards rule; and (4) a solution that eliminates the evolving standards rule, returns to the question of wanton and unnecessary infliction of pain, and recommends legislative reforms states should make in response.
Modern War, Nonstate Actors And The Geneva Conventions: No Longer Fit For Purpose?, Dr. Waseem Ahmad Qureshi
Modern War, Nonstate Actors And The Geneva Conventions: No Longer Fit For Purpose?, Dr. Waseem Ahmad Qureshi
San Diego International Law Journal
Many enduring armed conflicts of the last couple of decades have displaced millions of civilians, giving rise to refugee predicaments around the globe. These wars caused many civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian objects, utterly disregarding the protection offered under the Geneva Conventions. Between the rise in violence and the underlying violations of humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions have lost their significance. Thus, it must be considered whether the Geneva Conventions matter anymore with regard to their effectiveness and efficiency. If the Geneva Conventions are still relevant, then who is responsible for violations of humanitarian law? Further, when states …
There’S Something In The Water: Toxic Exposure Liability Of Public Water Suppliers In The Face Of Near-Universal Pfas Exposure, David Lloyd
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
California has not experienced the type of willful, large-scale PFAS pollution that states that hosted its manufacture, such as Ohio and West Virginia, have endured. Regardless, the ubiquity of these chemicals in California’s food and water supply, combined with a growing awareness of the serious health risks of PFAS exposure, prompted California to become a nationwide leader in PFAS regulation. In 2017, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) “added PFOA and PFOS to the Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to the state to cause reproductive toxicity” without setting a “maximum allowable dose level, below which no …

The United States Ban On Tourism To Cuba, Frank J. Vandall
San Diego International Law Journal
The purpose of this Article is to evaluate the United States ban on Americans’ touring Cuba. This Article begins with the history of the United States’ tumultuous relations with Cuba over the past 60 years, then it explores the specific language of the ban and the reasons presented for it. Additionally, the Article considers the impact of the new law on both the United States and Cuba and concludes with an argument for lifting the ban and returning to the policy of normalization that preexisted the declaration.
Protection Of Witnesses And Sensitive Information In U.K. Criminal Prosecutions, Eric Waage
Protection Of Witnesses And Sensitive Information In U.K. Criminal Prosecutions, Eric Waage
San Diego International Law Journal
This Article examines the film Closed Circuit, as it portrays the legal issues surrounding a British judge’s decision to hold a hearing in camera. As in the United States, holding in camera hearings safeguards the use of witnesses and protects confidential information before it is shared with all parties to a criminal case or the jury. Closed Circuit accurately portrays some aspects of the United Kingdom’s legal standards that govern these hearings including the judicial deference to the Crown’s national security interests, the appointment of cleared special counsel to represent the accused, and the use of pseudonyms to protect …

Managing Pediatric Atopic Dermatitis In The Allergy Clinic: Use Of An Eczema Action Plan To Improve Caregiver Understanding And Self-Efficacy, A Pilot Study, Danielle Hubacek
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a complex and chronic condition that affects approximately 10% of children throughout the United States (Brown et al., 2018). The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) (2017) estimates the average cost of eczema management for each patient is approximately $3,302 per year. The complex nature of atopic dermatitis indicates a need for individualized treatment plans. Research has shown that standardized patient teaching, written education materials, and Eczema Action Plans (EAP) reinforce patient teaching, parental understanding, and improve quality of life. This evidence-based practice (EBP) project introduces the use of a written Eczema Action …

Improving Pediatric Provider Preparedness For Postpartum Depression Screening, Samantha Shafer, Martha G. Fuller
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the most common complications of childbirth, affecting approximately 10-20% of mothers within the child’s first year of life with negative impact on both mother and child. . Pediatric primary care providers have frequent contact over the infant’s first year of life. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends screening mothers for PPD at the 1, 2, 4, and 6-month well-baby visits, yet due to barriers, pediatric providers are not consistently screening for PPD. Barriers include lack of preparedness and knowledge of resources and inadequate time.
Aims of Service Change: To improve pediatric provider …

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) role across the continuum of patient care continues to evolve, and the APRN continues to play a significant part in sustaining the current healthcare system and controlling the rising incidence of mortality and medical cost. While a substantial amount of evidence demonstrates that Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are expert healthcare providers, some studies also report that many new NPs fail to be confident in their capability to undertake the NP role and attend to increasing patient loads. …
