Development And Initial Validation Of A Mathematics-Specific Spatial Vocabulary Scale, Zehra E. Ünal, Lisa M. Ridgley, Yaoran Li, Cassandra Graves, Lora Khatib, Taryn Robertson, Perla Myers, David C. Geary

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

This study describes the development and initial validation of a mathematics-specific spatial vocabulary measure for upper elementary school students. Reviews of spatial vocabulary items, mathematics textbooks, and Mathematics Common Core State Standards identified 720 mathematical terms, 148 of which had spatial content (e.g., edge). In total, 29 of these items were appropriate for elementary students, and a pilot study (59 fourth graders) indicated that nine of them were too difficult (< 50% correct) or too easy (> 95% correct). The remaining 20 items were retained as a spatial vocabulary measure and administered to 181 (75 girls, mean age = 119.73 months, SD =4.01) fourth graders, along …

What Has Philosophy Ever Done For Nursing: A Discursive Shift From Margins To Mainstream, Jane M. Georges Jan 2023

What Has Philosophy Ever Done For Nursing: A Discursive Shift From Margins To Mainstream, Jane M. Georges

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

This paper is a personal dialogue of maneuvering the landscape of scholarship in the United States as a nurse faculty. The principal thesis of this paper is that a discursive shift from margins to mainstream literature has occurred within nursing discourse during the past 20 years as the result of a growing body of work by nurse philosophers. I utilize my own work in nursing philosophy as an exemplar and provide a narrative situated in a feminist-critical paradigm. This paper: (1) presents a historical background through a critical-feminist lens of the discursive shift using my own work and lived experiences …

Surgical Team Structure: How Familiarity And Team Size Influence Communication Effectiveness In Military Surgical Teams, Christopher H. Stucky, Felichism W. Kabo, Marla J. De Jong, Sherita L. House, Joshua A. Wymer

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship

Introduction

Preventable patient harm has persisted in health care despite recent advances to reduce errors. There is increasing recognition that non-technical skills, including communication and relationships, greatly impact interprofessional team performance and health care quality. Team familiarity and size are critical structural components that potentially influence information flow, communication, and efficiency. Methods

In this exploratory, prospective, cross-sectional study, we investigated the key structural components of surgical teams and identified how surgical team structure shapes communication effectiveness. Using total population sampling, we recruited surgical clinicians who provide direct patient care at a 138-bed military medical center. We used statistical modeling to …

Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Insect Pathogens: Implications For Plant Reproduction, Wilnelia Recart Gonzalez, Rover Bernhard, Isabella Ng, Katherine Garcia, Arietta E. Fleming-Davies Jan 2023

Meta-Analysis Of The Effects Of Insect Pathogens: Implications For Plant Reproduction, Wilnelia Recart Gonzalez, Rover Bernhard, Isabella Ng, Katherine Garcia, Arietta E. Fleming-Davies

Biology: Faculty Scholarship

Despite extensive work on both insect disease and plant reproduction, there is little research on the intersection of the two. Insect-infecting pathogens could disrupt the pollination process by affecting pollinator population density or traits. Pathogens may also infect insect herbivores and change herbivory, potentially altering resource allocation to plant reproduction. We conducted a meta-analysis to (1) summarize the literature on the effects of pathogens on insect pollinators and herbivores and (2) quantify the extent to which pathogens affect insect traits, with potential repercussions for plant reproduction. We found 39 articles that fit our criteria for inclusion, extracting 218 measures of …

Connatural Knowledge Of The Natural Law, Turner C. Nevitt Jan 2023

Connatural Knowledge Of The Natural Law, Turner C. Nevitt

Philosophy: Faculty Scholarship

This paper traces the basic contours of Aquinas’s account of connatural knowledge in order to see what role (if any) connaturality might play in our knowledge of the precepts of the natural law. It engages a dispute between Maritain and Doolan on this topic. After considering what Aquinas means by “connaturality” in general the paper examines the main elements of his view of knowledge by connaturality in particular. I argue that the true doctrine of Aquinas probably lies between Maritain and Doolan’s opposed interpretations. Although it is not the only way of doing so, connaturality or inclination would still seem …

Competition Between Audiovisual Correspondences Aids Understanding Of Interactions Between Auditory And Visual Perception, Laura Getz Jan 2023

Competition Between Audiovisual Correspondences Aids Understanding Of Interactions Between Auditory And Visual Perception, Laura Getz

Neuroscience, Cognition and Behavior: Faculty Scholarship

An audiovisual correspondence (AVC) refers to an observer’s seemingly arbitrary

yet consistent matching of sensory features across the two modalities; for

example, between auditory pitch height and visual height or visual size. Research

on AVCs frequently uses a speeded classification procedure in which participants

are asked to rapidly classify the pitch of a sound accompanied either by a

congruent or an incongruent visual object (e.g., high pitches are congruent with

higher/smaller visual objects and incongruent with lower/larger visual objects).

To investigate the strength of these pitch AVCs (height, size, spatial frequency,

brightness, sharpness), trials where the height AVC competed with …

Lxs Caravanerxs And Nonsecular Protest: Rethinking Migrant Family Separation With Un Llanto Colectivo, Marcelle Maese

English: Faculty Scholarship

Written and directed by Celia Herrera Rodríguez and Cherríe Moraga in 2018, "Un Llanto Colectivo: Press Conference & Performa-Protesta" took place in front of ICE headquarters in downtown San Diego (September 15th) and then in front of Otay Mesa Detention Center (September 16th). Envisioned as an act of consciousness raising around family separation, Central American caravans, and the detention-industrial-complex, the flyer invitation read, "[T]his is ceremonial resistance." This writing is an extension of my witness of and participation in Un llanto colectivo. I provide a historical context for lxs caravanerxs, as well as interviews with Maestras Celia and Cherríe. Disruption And Emergence: How To Think About Human Rights Futures, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick Jan 2023

Disruption And Emergence: How To Think About Human Rights Futures, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick

School of Peace Studies: Faculty Scholarship

This article suggests that humanity may be approaching a critical juncture, since a confluence of macro-historical changes might—individually or collectively—fundamentally transform the field of human rights, and usher in a second human rights era. In particular, it suggests that the confluence of tectonic geopolitical changes, system-wide shifts in climate and energy, and fundamentally new developments in science and technology might lead to a rupture of the same scale as the cluster of events that heralded the onset of the current rights regime. This argument builds on a number of literatures, especially those focused on norms cycles, rights generations, and what …

Reimagining Business Education Through University-Community Microenterprise Collaborations, Kevin G. Guerrieri, Aarti S. Ivanic, Diana Hannasch-Haag, Julieta Gonzalez

Spanish: Faculty Scholarship

Business education must evolve. Traditionally, it has been narrowly focused, siloed, and often reflective of the transactional nature of business through the lens of maximizing shareholder wealth. The triumph of market fundamentalism over the last five decades has coincided with increasing social inequality, the concentration of corporate power, and a weakening of many forms of social solidarity. There are calls for institutions of higher education to reaffirm their commitment to their public purposes and the common good and to leverage their economic resources as anchor institutions. Schools of business have enormous potential to contribute to these efforts by integrating into …

Luxury Is What You Say: Analyzing Electronic Word-Of-Mouth Marketing Of Luxury Products Using Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning, Yusuf Oc, Kirk Plangger, Sean Sands, Colin L. Campbell, Leyland Pitt

School of Business: Faculty Scholarship

Many luxury brands are investing heavily in creating dynamic video content to actively engage consumers. While it is straightforward to calculate the views or “likes” from a particular campaign to benchmark performance, analyzing consumers' comments on luxury brands' dynamic video content presents a challenge due to the unstructured nature of natural language and large comment volumes. Previous studies utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) have not adequately examined the impact of brand types, brand luxuriousness, and consumer diversity. To address this research gap, this article tests a conceptual framework with over 29,000 comments from 88 YouTube campaigns for nine …

Restorative Pedagogy To Build Community In The Classroom: Autoethnographic Reflections From Faculty, Sheila Mcmahon, Zara Ahmed, Michelle Bemiller

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Restorative justice (RJ) is a philosophy and set of practices that center harms and needs. Within a classroom setting, an RJ pedagogical approach invites a process of shared learning that attends to critical issues of equity, power, and voice. Utilizing an autoethnographic approach, this manuscript includes critical reflections from three faculty members from diverse disciplines and positionalities about the use of RJ approaches to teaching in our respective classrooms. This paper includes discussion about the intersection of RJ with critical pedagogy, power differentials, and pragmatic issues of classroom structure learning design.

A Path Forward To #Niunamenos Based On An Intersectional Analysis Of Laws Criminalizing Femicide/Feminicide In Latin America, Melissa Padilla Dec 2022

A Path Forward To #Niunamenos Based On An Intersectional Analysis Of Laws Criminalizing Femicide/Feminicide In Latin America, Melissa Padilla

San Diego International Law Journal

Since 2007, eighteen Latin American countries have enacted laws that criminalize femicide/‌feminicide in an effort to address gender-based murders in the region and to uphold their obligations under international human rights law. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and its systemic lingering effects exacerbated the existent dangerous levels of gender-based violence in the region, resulting in an increase in gender-based murders. To address these murders, between 2020 and 2021, a quarter of the eighteen Latin American countries that criminalized femicide/‌feminicide have implemented or are in the process of implementing reforms to their laws criminalizing femicide/‌feminicide. Given this new trend to address the …

‘I Will Control Your Mind’: The International Regulation Of Brain-Hacking, Thibault Moulin Dec 2022

‘I Will Control Your Mind’: The International Regulation Of Brain-Hacking, Thibault Moulin

San Diego International Law Journal

In the near future, the use of neurotechnologies—like brain-computer interfaces and brain stimulation—could become widespread. It will not only be used to help persons with disabilities or illness, but also by members of the armed forces and in everyday life (e.g., for entertainment and gaming). However, recent studies suggested that it is possible to hack into neural devices to obtain information, inflict pain, induce mood change, or influence movements. This Article anticipates three scenarios which may be challenging in the future—i.e., brain hacking for the purpose of reading thoughts, remotely controlling someone, and inflicting pain or death—and assesses their compliance …
