Sea Changes In The Lives Of Japanese Buddhist Women In Hawai‘I, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Apr 2023

Sea Changes In The Lives Of Japanese Buddhist Women In Hawai‘I, Karma Lekshe Tsomo

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

Three cycles of change characterize the evolution of Japanese Buddhist temples in Hawai‘i: the early years, the war years, and the contemporary period. This brief article explores women’s roles and patterns of adaptation to local circumstances over generations during these cycles of change. Special attention is given to the experiences of Japanese immigrant Buddhist women in the Jōdo Shinshū school of Buddhism. The aim is to show how Japanese women who immigrated to Hawai‘i helped shape a uniquely local flavor of Buddhism, made significant contributions to Jōdo Shinshū’s development, and helped ensure the continuity of Buddhist traditions up to the …

Fostering Connection Through Ecological Identity: Expanding Colonial Concepts Of Outdoor Adventures, Elizabeth Farrell Mar 2023

Fostering Connection Through Ecological Identity: Expanding Colonial Concepts Of Outdoor Adventures, Elizabeth Farrell

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

How can I foster ecological identity? Defining ecological identity as a sense of awareness of how one relates with nature, and identity as an ecological being that is nature, this action research project will explore the ways in which people connect to the natural world through everyday moments. In understanding that the foundations, practices, and industry messaging of the outdoors can be exclusive and perpetuate systems of oppression, I am seeking to expand the notion of what nature connection can be. The hope is to create more accessible, inclusive, and equitable outdoor education practices. Research design included a survey and …

This study focuses on an activity during the interview where …

Protocol Optimization And Reducing Dropout In Online Research, Halee Staggs, Colleen Mills-Finnerty Jan 2023

Protocol Optimization And Reducing Dropout In Online Research, Halee Staggs, Colleen Mills-Finnerty

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

Online research has advantages over in-person research; it’s cost-efficient, scalable, and may increase diversity. Researchers collecting data online can assess protocol performance with classification models like a decision tree. However, challenges include attrition, lack of testing environment controls, technical limitations, and lack of face-to-face rapport and real time feedback. It is necessary to consider human factors of the teleresearch process from recruitment to data collection. Here we document the impact of protocol optimizations on social media engagement and retention between a pilot sample of Veterans (n = 26) and a post-optimization sample of both Veterans and civilians (n = 220) …

Beyond The Label: Multimodal Strategies For Working With Multilingual Learners, Reka C. Barton

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

This paper encourages teachers to move beyond the label of English language learner, and the possible connotations and limitations that may be associated with the designation, and instead expand their notions of the possibilities of working with linguistically diverse students. In this expansion, multimodality can serve as a basis for instructional strategies that would benefit multilingual learners and their classmates. Two strategies are offered, Visual Thinking Strategies and Talking Drawings. Both strategies move past the modes of reading and writing, and allow entry points via visual modalities which offers more opportunities for multilingual learners to access content and express themselves.

A growing number of babies in the United States are being raised in bilingual homes, without an easily identifiable first or native language, but rather two or more languages being acquired and spoken simultaneously. It is imperative that the richness and diversity of race and language be centered and valued at the onset of the nation’s youngest population. Additionally, research demonstrates that the early years are critical to the maintenance of home language(s) as well as to the development of a racial consciousness that foregrounds the socialization of race and language that will continue to develop throughout childhood. With this …

Student experiences have long been discussed within the field of international education. Most studies focus on the overwhelming positive benefits students may have before, during, and after the study abroad experience. Not surprisingly, the percentage of undergraduate students who study abroad continues to increase. While there are certainly benefits to studying abroad, few studies have emerged that highlight the negative effects of study abroad. This study focuses on the potential adversity the study abroad experience may have on students, specifically in terms of identity-sense making prior to, during, and after their study abroad programs. This paper argues that by focusing …

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Including diverse participants in couple intervention studies is critical for developing an evidence base that informs best practices for all potential clients. Research has shown that subgroups of clients respond differently to different interventions and that interventions that have been adapted to fit the needs of a given population are more effective than non-adapted interventions. Unfortunately, couple intervention samples often exclude participants with marginalized identities and culturally adapted couple intervention research is limited. The lack of information about best practices for diverse client subgroups perpetuates mental and relational health disparities. We conducted a systematic review to examine recruitment strategies and …
