Materializing Hypertexts: Bridging The 'Gap' Between Digital And Analog, Melanie Hubbard
Materializing Hypertexts: Bridging The 'Gap' Between Digital And Analog, Melanie Hubbard
Digital Initiatives Symposium
One of the challenges of teaching digital humanities or digital based scholarship is overcoming the seeming disconnect between digital and analog. This is especially evident when students struggle to transfer their scholarly work into a hypertext environment. In part, their struggle is due to a lack of awareness concerning the structure and mechanics of all texts, whether they are analog or digital. Their other hurdle seems to be the false notion that the move from analog to digital is a discontinuous leap. In my presentation I will address this seeming analog/digital gap and how teaching students about the history of …

(with apologies to the Bard: quote modified from Hamlet, 1.5.4950.)
The Folger Shakespeare Library’s wiki, Folgerpedia, performs a number of functions for the institution and its community: it makes visible scholarly activities, maintains institutional history, and serves as a site of research on Shakespeare and early modern topics. Primary audiences for the Folger—and thus, for Folgerpedia—include scholars, students (K12 and college level), generalpublic enthusiasts, and library professionals. Folgerpedia’s mission is to create and support the collaborative generation of information surrounding our collection, Library, institution, programming, and education initiatives.
One of the challenges facing Folgerpedia is to foster a space that …

Digital Initiatives Symposium
In 2011 the University of Iowa Libraries began crowdsourcing the digital transcription of its manuscript archives. Four years and over 50,000 transcribed pages later, that project, known as DIY History, has garnered considerable internet attention via Buzzfeed, Twitter, Tumblr, and the NBC News blog. At the same time, it has been threaded into undergraduate classrooms at Iowa as a means of introducing students to primary source research, information literacy, and multimodal design.
Matt Gilchrist and Tom Keegan will discuss how faculty members and librarians collaborated on an assignment that emphasizes course objectives while strengthening student connections to the UI Libraries. …
Good Kids, Bad City: The Examination Of Crime Resistance In Low Income, High Crime, Communities Of Color, Troy M. Williams
Good Kids, Bad City: The Examination Of Crime Resistance In Low Income, High Crime, Communities Of Color, Troy M. Williams
Theses
A number of criminological theories assert that individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities are more likely to participate in criminal activities. Given the confluence of race and class in this country Black and Latino men are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system. However, less is known about men of color who grow up in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods, but do not commit crimes. In this study, the researcher examines a group of Black men who exhibited leadership to resist assimilated criminological behavior, which is the process of participating in crime in order to be revered by peers, family, or community members. …

The Patient Experience As Rated By Consumers, Barbara Jean Kelley
The Patient Experience As Rated By Consumers, Barbara Jean Kelley
Dissertations
The purpose of this research project is to identify the key drivers in patients’ satisfaction. Specifically, the factors that patients consider when assigning a numeric rating (0-10) to their overall hospital stay. The overall satisfaction question is significant because it is considered to be the “top box” question. The top box question is the patientrated experience measure reported to Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) in determining the compensation a facility receives for reimbursement in the Value Based Purchasing model. The results of this study have a financial implication for healthcare, as well as in the delivery …
American Indian Women’S Health Perceptions And Health Promotion Behaviors, Sharon Boothe-Kepple
American Indian Women’S Health Perceptions And Health Promotion Behaviors, Sharon Boothe-Kepple
Dissertations
Background: Most problems affecting the health of American Indian women are related to lifestyles and health-related behaviors (Carter, Morse, Giruad, & Driskell, 2008; Linsley, Kane, & Owen, 2011). Understanding health promotion behaviors could decrease or prevent a number of chronic diseases that afflict the American Indian population; however, little is known about how American Indian women perceive illness, how they promote their health within the context of their culture, and the barriers they face.
Purpose: This study was designed to develop knowledge about the health perceptions and health promoting behaviors of American Indian women residing within the Chickasaw …

Perinatal Depression And Preterm Birth, Elizabeth C. Light
Perinatal Depression And Preterm Birth, Elizabeth C. Light
Dissertations
Purpose/Aims: Despite the notable 15 year low in overall preterm birth (PTB), a 10% improvement since the 2006 peak with declines for each of the largest race and Hispanic origin groups, the United States has the highest rate of PTB of any industrialized country with estimates of 11.5% or approximately 500,000 infants annually. The Institute of Medicine (2006) recommends researchers focus on PTB causes including reasons for health disparities. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with PTB among a sample of racially and ethnically diverse women with depressive symptomatology (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale [EPDS], score …

An Agency Theoretical Approach To Corporate Board Diversity, Sandeep Gopalan, Katherine Watson
An Agency Theoretical Approach To Corporate Board Diversity, Sandeep Gopalan, Katherine Watson
San Diego Law Review
There is a growing realization that the current low level of women’s representation on corporate boards is difficult to justify in a society premised upon gender equality. Nevertheless, in the face of continued resistance by business interests to regulatory solutions, policy makers have focused upon offering business-friendly justifications for appointing more women directors claiming that increased representation is positively associated with firm performance. These arguments have been buttressed by a plethora of empirical studies examining the relationship between gender diversity and a variety of aspects of firm performance and purporting to show a positive relationship. Conversely, there are studies showing …

Mentor Texts Squared: Helping Students Explore Voice Through Readings That Promote Critical Consciousness, Sarina Chugani Molina, Mark Manasse
Mentor Texts Squared: Helping Students Explore Voice Through Readings That Promote Critical Consciousness, Sarina Chugani Molina, Mark Manasse
School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
Much research has been conducted documenting the reading and writing challenges students in precollege courses face (Crosby, 2007; Masterson, 2007). Some colleges label these courses “developmental,” “remedial,” or “basic skills” courses. Th ese “developmental” students comprise both US-born and immigrant pupils from culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse backgrounds (Roberge, Siegal, & Harklau, 2009) and are oft en institutionally marginalized (Blumenthal, 2002), leaving them oft en underprepared when matriculating into credit-bearing college-level courses (Roberge, 2009). In this article, we report on a case study where a community college ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) instructor and three faculty members at …
Mediating Teacher Learning Through Dialogical Learning Spaces Integrated In A Practicum Experience, Sarina Chugani Molina
Mediating Teacher Learning Through Dialogical Learning Spaces Integrated In A Practicum Experience, Sarina Chugani Molina
School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
Teacher preparation programs in the field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) often require pre-service teachers to engage in some observations and teaching as part of their coursework or practicum. Some programs require their students to observe classrooms and record their thoughts in their observation journals. These observation journals could vary from being unguided with little or no support to being guided with specific directions or readings on what to observe. For practicum students, they may be asked to tutor one-on-one, work in small groups or teach the entire class, but what they are expected to learn …
Chicano Park 2015 Murals Documentation Project: Guide To The Murals Of Chicano Park, Department Of Ethnic Studies
Chicano Park 2015 Murals Documentation Project: Guide To The Murals Of Chicano Park, Department Of Ethnic Studies
Ethnic Studies Books
The Chicano Park Murals Documentation Project was born as a result of the Department of Ethnic Studies with support from the Office of Community Service Learning at the University of San Diego (USD) through working collaboratively with the Chicano Park Steering Committee (CPSC) for over two years. It was the desire of the CPSC that the mural restoration project be documented along with all of the other historic murals and sculptures found at Chicano Park. As a result, Professor Alberto Pulido, along with his students in Ethnic Studies 343: “Chicano/Latino Studies” took on the task as a way to learn …
Using The Ability To Host World Events As Incentive To Procure Voluntary Anti-Discrimination Legal Reform, Brett M. Crowell
Using The Ability To Host World Events As Incentive To Procure Voluntary Anti-Discrimination Legal Reform, Brett M. Crowell
San Diego International Law Journal
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) have the power to effect global change. Countries vie for the honor of hosting world events such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup because of the prestige and the economic and political gains those events provide. The IOC and FIFA can and should use the incentive of hosting one of these events to procure legal reform in myriad humanitarian equality issues such as sexual orientation, gender, and race. These organizations can prompt this change by requiring that host countries uphold a set of minimum legal standards …

Moral Development And Public Health Nursing, Margaret Avila
Moral Development And Public Health Nursing, Margaret Avila
Dissertations
Public health nurses (PHNs) have the opportunity and professional obligation to be at the forefront of the fight to eliminate health disparities based on the practice principle of social justice. The overall purpose of this descriptive study was to explore the stage of the moral development in a convenience sample of practicing public health nurses (PHNs) and the differences in moral development stage across selected demographic variables (age, gender, race/ethnicity, level of entry into professional nursing, highest level of education, years practicing as an RN, years practicing in a public health department, self-identified political views, primary language, and region of …
