Studies On Growth And Development Of Teleost Eggs With Special Reference To Deuterium Enriched Environments, Pyari Mohan Misra

Eggs of the brook trout, Salvelinus fontnalis (Mitchell), were hatched in dilute deuterium concentrations of 1, 3 and 9 percent without any observable abnormality. The eggs grew exponentially and showed a significant reduction in growth rate as a function of deuterium concentration. The larvae also grew exponentially and showed a significant but less regular reduction in grows in 1, 3 and 9 percent D₂O. The ultimate weight of larvae developed from eggs incubated in the above concentrations of D₂O eventually became the same when they were placed in hatchery water. Peanut Oil Meal As A Source Of Protein For Chicks, Ebenezer Winston Agudu

Four experiments, each of tour we&ks' duration were conducted to determine the protein quality of peanut 011 meal in broiler chick diets. In the t1rst experiment, samples of united States peanut 011 meal, and some samples from Brazil, supposed to be toxic, were compared in all-vegetable rations. Both peanut 011 meals were found to be interior to so7bean oil meal. An equal mixture of soybean 011 meal and peanut oil meal sustained growth as good as the soybean 011 meal diet. There was high mortality of chicks on the suspected toxic meal.

In each of ten weekly trials, 105 eggs from mated White Leghorn hens were divided into sets of 15 eggs each. Yolks of some of these eggs carried CELO antibodies. Before incubation, the various sets of eggs were inoculated through t he air cell into the albumen with decimal dilutions of the virus, l0^-1 through l0^-5. In each trial two controls were maintained. One set was inoculated with normal allantoamniotic fluid, the other was not inoculated.

AAF harvested from CELO exposed embryos dying during incubation was found to carry the CELO virus. The higher concentrations of virus …

Physiological factors and conditions accompanying anthocyanin synthesis and morphogenesis in the hypocotyl of Impatiens balsamina L. were investigated with the objective of showing relationships between a biochemical process (anthocyanin synthesis) and morphogenetic events (the formation of epidermal hairs and roots, elongation of the hypocotyl, straightening of the hypocotyl arch), which may yield information on the physiological control of growth and development. The Influence Of Thyroid Feeding On The Pharmacologic Actions Of Certain Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors, Richard N. Carrier

Although a few disparate reports have been published to the contrary, accumulating evidence seems to indicate that the feeding of thyroid extract, or the parenteral administration of thyroxine, produce a decline in the monoamine oxidase activity in the livers of various animals. As a consequence this anti-enzymatic effect, and the resultant biologic sparing of catecholamines, has been incriminated as partly responsible for the hypersensitivity of hyperthyroid animals and isolated tissues, to the pharmacologic actions of sympathomimetic amines. Rather recently a class of anti-melancholic drugs, or “psychic energizers”, have been made clinically available. These agents seem to act as anti-depressants by …

This report presents the results of a study from March, 1959, to June, 1960, of the spawning run of the alewife, Alosa pseudoharengus (Wilson), and the seaward migration of juveniles. It is based on examination of migrating adults and juveniles in a small, fresh water pond and outlet stream in southern Rhode Island.

In the spring adults enter fresh water in very distinct and separate groups, termed “waves” for the purposes of this study. Water temperature appears to play a major role in the formation of these waves. Early migrants are predominantly older male fish. As the spawning migration progresses, …

Valeriana officinalis, a perennial herb indigenous to both Europe and Asia, was investigated for its pharmacological properties. An attempt was also made collaterally with the Department of Pharmacognosy of the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy to isolate the most active function of Valerian. Valerian was extracted by solvent extraction procedures developed by the Department of Pharmocognosy and each fraction was tested and compared for its biological activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility that professional guidance counselors were less likely than professional teachers to condemn students in counseling situations . This contention was based upon past experiences and personal observations that indicated that teachers were more apt to use condemnation than counselors as a technique to change student behavior in an individual counseling situation.

The purpose of the investigation is to attempt to make female ticks of the genus Dermacentor radioactive with carbon-14 labeled glycine; to determine whether transovarial passage will take place; and to determine the effect of the isotope (C¹⁴) on the fecundity of the female and on the viability of the eggs.

A feeding method described by Chabaud and by Burgdorfer has been adapted for the administering of radioisotopes. Female ticks, Dermacentor variabilis and Dermacentor andersoni, were fed glycine.
