A Study On The Action Of The Hypothalmic Feeding Centers During Insulin Stress, Paul Edward Araujo

Mice of the KC strain can survive injections up to 300 units of insulin as compared to the maximum 30-50 units tolerated by normal BUB mice. This resistance is inherited. The KC mice are able to survive the hypoglycemia by maintaining their blood sugar level just above that which produces convulsions. Previous work had suggested that an increased rate 0£ food consumption supplied the carbohydrate necessary to overcome the hypoglycemia.

Current theories on the mechanism of hunger drive emphasize the role played by the hypothalamic reeding centers. The best understood centers are the lateral feeding center and the ventromedial satiety …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Sulfhydryl Reactivity And The Inhibition Of In Vitro Oxygen Uptake By Certain Molluscicidal B-Nitrostyrene Derivatives, Robert Thomas Louis-Ferdinand

Eleven derivatives of B-nitrostyrene were found to inhibit the oxygen uptake of whole tissue homogenates of the snail Australorbis glabratus. The inhibition of oxygen uptake by B-nitrostyrene was diminished in the presence of excess and equimolar concentrations of cysteine in the incubation media. The addition of cysteine resulted in changes in the ultraviolet spectra of B-nitrostyrene solutions. Similar addition of serine to B-nitrostyrene solutions had no discernible effect on the ultraviolet spectra. B-nitrostyrene were found to delay the development of color which normally results from the reaction between cysteine and 515’-dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB). Imidazole - 4, 5-di carboxylic acid, di -2-mcthylhydrazide (JNIVa), exemplary of several recently synthesized dihydrazides, was investigated for possible monoamine oxidase inhibiting properties. A significant alteration of systemic blood pressure, measured both directly and indirectly, was not evident during either single of resepated administration of JNIVa at los doses. Monoamine oxidase, as determined spectrophotometrically, was inhibited in vitro but not in vivo by this compound. The degree of enzyme inhibition was shown to be dependent upon preincubation time. Compound JNIVa was less effective in inhibiting monoamine oxidase in vitro than was phenelzine, a known inhibitor of monoamine oxidase both in …

Differential Effects Of Guanethidine And Reserpine On Norepinephrine In The Brain And Heart Of Male Albino Rats Subjected To Restraint, Thomas Paul Blaszkowski

The effect of guanethidine (1.20 mg/kg, i.p.) or reserpine (0.2 mg/kg, i.p.) has been compared on various indices of pituitary-adrenal stimulation in rats subjected to chronic forced restraint for 24 days. This was accomplished by analyzing the serum corticosterone, the adrenal ascorbic acid (AAA) and various organ weights such as the adrenals, brain and heart. Peripheral and central norepinephrine (NE) was also measured.

Chronically stressed, control rats or those treated with guanethidine demonstrated both behavioral and neurochemical adaptation. Initial excitation associated with restraint was related to changes in NE in the brain and heart. As the experiment progressed, the stressed, …

With the increasing awareness in this country of a disadvantaged segment of the population, attention is focused upon determinants of this situation. Congruent with a number of theories in child development, it has been shown that early experiences of the individual have an important influence on the formation of personality. This study is concerned with the observation of some of the effects of early experiences through a comparison of advantaged and disadvantaged pre-school children in a school situation.

The relationship between urinary dopamine levels, and arterial blood pressure was studied in male albino rats.

The experimental rats were subjected to a right nephrectomy and received a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, either tranylcypromine or pargyline.

The blood pressure of the group receiving tranylcypromine was elevated to approximately 120 mm Hg during the first two weeks. During weeks seven and eight the blood pressure was further elevated to approximately 130 mm Hg but dropped back gradually to 115 mm Hg for a net drop of 3 percent where it remained to the end of the study.
