The purpose of this study was to investigate the safety for human dietary consumption of three synthetic compounds which are potential sources of dietary energy, namely 1, 3-Butylene Glycol (BG), 1, 3-Butylene Glycol Mono-Oleate (BGMO) and 1, 3-Butylene Glycol Mono-Stearate (BGMS), by feeding these compounds to parents and three generations of rats. Previous animal feeding studies had indicated that BG was low in toxicity, but the effects of BG on reproduction had not been adequately established. Enzymatic Hydrolosis Of 16s Ribosomal Rna And 30s Ribosomal Subunits, Jaime Amaya-Farfan

E. coli 30s ribosomal subunits and protein-free 168 RNA have been mildly hydrolyzed with pancreatic ribonuclease and the RNA fragments analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The protein-free RNA gives nine discrete fragments and the 308 subunits give six discrete fragments. A comparison of electrophoretic mobilities, indicates that at least three fragments from 168 RNA are distinct from the fragments from 308. The kinetics of the hydrolysis reaction is pseudo first-order for the protein-free 168 RNA and pseudo second-order for the 308 ribosomes. The rate of hydrolysis of the protein-free 168 RNA is much faster than that of the 308 subunit. …

Behavior is under the control of external and internal stimuli. The emission of behavior is therefore most efficient when the stimulus-conditions similar to those under which the behavior was acquired are reinstated. Amphetamine was shown to produce a "stimulus-state" which controlled behavior. A decrement in response strength occurred when a response acquired under the influence of amphetamine was emitted in the absence of amphetamine or in the presence of no-drug. The response strength recovered when the amphetamine-state was reinstated. Rats were trained to jump to a wooden platform from an electrifiable grid-floor, in order to avoid shock. A buzzer was …

The mechanisms by which hypoxia or social isolation interact with drug action were investigated by the use of several parameters including drug-induced narcosis, convulsions, change in body temperature and various biochemical parameters.

Acute Hypoxia

Hypobaric hypoxia (364 mm Hg, 10% O₂) enhanced. the depressant effects of barbital, pentobarbital and chloral hydrate in mice and rats. Mice were far more sensitive than rats, barbital narcosis being affected to the greatest extent. Reduced oxygen (10%) at normal pressure also potentiated pentobarbital narcosis.

The biochemical mechanism by which glucocorticoids affect collagen metabolism was investigated. Triamcinolone, hydrocortisone and methylprednisolone significantly decreased liver proline hydroxylase activity in vivo. This was not a manifestation of an antianabolic effect on protein. Triamcinolone inhibited liver proline hydroxylase activity in a dose dependent manner in vivo. An observed elevation of liver hydroxylase activity in adrenalectomized animals was decreased to control level by hydrocortisone treatment.

The effect of varying solvent systems on the solubilities of glycine, L-alanine, L-valine, L-phenylalanine, and DL-aminooctanoic acid at z50 C. was studied. The entire concentration spectrum from pure water to pure semipolar solvent was used for each of. the solvent systems of methanol-water, ethanol-water, n-propanol water, isopropanol-water, and tertiary butanol-water. Further, the effect of pH variation on the solubilities of the amino acids in each of the solvent systems was studied. Aliquots were withdrawn from each solvent system studied and analyzed gravimetrically to determine the resultant solubility.
