Effect Of Conditional Stimulus On Morphine Withdrawal Signs In The Rat, Richard B. Drawbaugh

The present investigation was undertaken to demonstrate the comparisons and contrasts of the conditional stimuli's (CS's) actions with those of morphine in morphine withdrawn rats. The study shows that specific stimuli altered behavioral and physiological withdrawal signs such as: hypothermia, shakes, ptosis, piloerection, writhing and aggression. Also, one stimulus was able to effect two biochemical measures (blood glucose and striatal homovanillic acid) similar to the action of morphine.

Rats were given two equally spaced injections of morphine sulfate paired with different stimuli (bell, drug, oil of anise, saccharin). The stimuli were paired with an injection for 15-25 days. Twenty-four hours …

Time And Frequency Domain Representations Of The Left Ventricle: Theoretical And Experimental Results, Dennis James Arena

A frequency domain and a time domain model of the left ventricle are described in this work. These representations provide insight into the function of the healthy left ventricle and show how ventricular function may be altered by heart disease.

In developing the frequency domain representation of the left ventricle, the flow and pressure waveforms generated by the left ventricle were described as superpositions of sinusoidal oscillations at different frequencies. Flow and pressure waveforms were obtained experimentally at two different left ventricular afterloads. The two different afterloads were obtained utilizing an intraaortic balloon. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the Will to Live concept as it applies to the elderly. This was accomplished by exploring the relationship among the variables of Purpose in Life; Locus of Control; Depression; and a self-rating Will to Live scale. These are variables which, according to the literature, could be expected to be major components of the Will to Live concept. The subjects for this study were 63 volunteers, ranging in age from 60 to 95, taken from different housing settings, nursing homes; apartments for the elderly; and private homes in the community. Three experiments were conducted to obtain some empirical generalizations about the structure of semantic memory. In the first experiment subjects were asked to give features for five category names as well as four instances per category. Instances varied on degree of relatedness to the category. In the second experiment subjects were asked to separate the features that they had given into (a) those that were essential for the meaning of a word (defining), and (b) those that were not absolutely necessary for the word (characteristic). Children's attitudes towards the crippled, the retarded, the mentally ill and normal people were assessed using the semantic differential. Subjects were ten boys and ten girls from both the third and sixth grades (total N=40). Separate analyses of variance with repeated measures were performed for each of the four scales of the semantic differential: Evaluation, Potency, Activity and Understandability.

A significant sex main effect was found for the Evaluation (p .05) and Activity (p .01) scales. Females rated all concepts more positively on these two scales than did males. A significant (p .01) grade by concept interaction was found for …

Application of standard geologic photointerpretive techniques to a series of offshore photographs of the Block Island cliffs has shown significant correspondence with previous stratigraphic field studies. Constant scale while mapping and a vertical exaggeration for the final profile were achieved with the aid of a Zoom Transfer Scope.

Photogeologic unit boundaries were defined by: the nature of bedding visible in the photographs, the extent of different erosional and drainage patterns on the cliff face, changes in texture of the cliff face, tonal variations, and variations in clast size.

The hydroxylation of proline is thought to be one of the critical cellular events necessary for the synthesis and secretion of structural collagen. Using antibody directed against prolyl hydroxylase it has been shown that there is an enzymatically inactive protein related to prolyl hydroxylase in mammalian tissue. This cross-reacting protein is always present in excess relative to active hydroxylase and it is not kriown whether it is a precursor or a degradation product 0£ prolyl hydroxylase. Precise methods o f determining the effective surface area without disturbing the in vivo system have not been developed. The upper Pettaquamscutt River Estuary contains a unique overwintering population of striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum). During the winters of 1974 and 1975, experimental gillnets were used to sample this population. Catch data was examined in relaiton to abundance and distribution. Length, weight, and sex of individuals were recorded and ovaries were examined. Ichthyoplankton samples taken in the area during May and June of 1974 were examined for evidence of successful striped bass spawning.

The flow of particulate phosphorus through the atmosphere has been studied: The goal of the work was to deduce the magnitude and direction of the fluxes of phosphorus through the atmosphere and to identify the sources of this phosphorus. Samples of atmospheric particulate matter were collected at urban, rural, and remote continental sites, at remote island sites, and on ship-board over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans Samples of precipitation and. dry fallout were collected at sampling sites at Narragansett, R.I. and Bermuda.
