The study investigated food habit change in a low-income Portuguese population, established factors which influence the nature and extent of change and evaluates the extent of change on dietary adequacy. Families were referred from the W.I.C. program (Women, Infants and Children) thus insuring a low income population. Food intake records were obtained for one pre-school child and the mother. A total of 50 families were contacted. In addition, a questionnaire was administered by interview. Questions were asked concerning child feeding practices and interaction with the non-Portuguese community

The effects of a 100 mg. dose of secobarbital was measured on a cognitive and psychomotor test of human behavior presumably related to driving an automobile. Eight healthy subjects, six female and two male, ranging in age from 25 to 40 years were tested by means of a simple math test and a pursuit rotor. Each subject underwent three separate drug experiments and during each was tested at one hour and at three hours after secobarbital administration. Dibutyltin dichloride (DBT}, one of a series of dialkyltin derivatives used industrially as polyvinylchloride stabilizers and urethane catalysts, was investigated for its ability to induce liver fibrosis in rats. Collagen, the predominant protein in fibrotic tissue, is synthesized in a series of sequential steps consisting of assembly of a proline-rich and lysine-rich polypeptide precursor of collagen, enzymatic hydroxylation of some of the prolyl and lysyl residues, and glycosylation of some of · the hydroxylysyl residues. Since prolyl residues are not hydroxylated before they are in peptide-bound form, the conversion of isotopically labeled proline to hydroxyproline by prolyl hydroxylase was taken …

Dry deposition, rainfall and atmospheric particulate samples collected at a coastal Rhode Island site, and aboard RV/Trident over the North West Atlantic Ocean were analyzed for Na and Mg in order to understand the rate and mechanisms of removal of atmospheric sea salt. Perkin Elmer atomic absorption spectrophotometer models 303 and 360 were used for the analyses. Samples collected at the R.I. coastal site were divided into 3 different categories, namely, "marine", "land" and "mixed" samples depending on the local surface wind direction during sampling. This study assessed the efficacy of positive electrical stimulation of the brain in counterconditioning fear in 100 albino laboratory rats. A parametric investigation was undertaken in which fear was conditioned through presentation of electric foot shock and then reduced through response prevention, in combination with different types of electrical stimulation of the brain. The basic measure of fear was the Conditioned Emotional Response (CER), as seen in the suppression of licking behavior.

Determining the impact of petroleum pollution in estuarine environments is essential, due to their biological importance. The Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory (MERL) offers a unique opportunity to investigate the geochemical fate and biological effects of chronic petroleum addition to the productive Narragansett Bay estuary. The two main objectives of this research were to determine: (1) the geochemical distribution of hydrocarbons for Bay sediments, and (2) the mode of incorporation, distribution and fate of saturated hydrocarbons in the MERL ecosystem sediments.

The purpose of this study was to examine how males and females who were categorized as either open or closedminded would respond to a Slide Show followed by a True/False Test and the Human Assistance Distance Scale (RADS) constructed for this experiment.

A group of subjects took Rokeach's Dogmatism Scale which differentiated them into openminded and closedminded groups. Both groups were matched by sex. They then viewed the Slide Show which consisted of low and high stress pictures, taken from a variety of sources. The subjects were then given a True/False Test related to factual content of the slides. They …

In light of the growing demand for imported oil, the accelerated offshore development program and the recent series of tanker incidents, many states have enacted, or plan to enact, legislation to protect their coastal lands and waters from oil pollution. The purpose of this paper is to outline present state legislation that deals with controlling oil pollution, and stating how this legislation would coexist with existing and proposed federal legislation and the International Conventions. The results of this study point to areas where state legislation would be useful and where overlapping or unnecessary legislation does exist.

The central notion of intergovernmental and inter-interest balancing suggested by the title of this paper reflects a distinctly American theme derived from our pluralistic, competing, compromissory and somewhat optimistic governmental values and experience. The Coastal Zone Management Act (hereafter CZMA or the Act) and the success of its implementation rests firmly on this balancing premise. The CZMA's assumptions, processes and implicit or stated objectives involve reliance on a governmental system that achieves effective and equitable intergovernmental balance.Yet, as I think this investigation will show, there are no ready-made answers as to how balance is to be achieved through the Act--let …

About two decades ago when the First Law of the Sea Conference was underway, little attention was paid to ocean management. By then all of the ocean space apart from narrow bands of coastal waters was broadly recognized as the High Seas which is open to use by all countries. But despite this concept of free open use, only the major maritime powers were actually interested in maximizing the freedom of the seas principle. During this period there were only ninety independent coastal and landlocked states.

In the United States, prior to Public Law 94-265, the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976, regulation of the harvest of oceanic fishery stocks was complicated by the principles of common property resource laws founded by Grotius' dissertation on freedom of the seas. Public Law 94-265 vests ownership in the right to manage stock of fish within 200 miles of the United States' coast to the United States as trustee of that fishery resource. Within the framework of extended jurisdiction of fishery management, individual states in the republic keep and maintain control of fishery resources. within their respective territories.
