Comparison Of Sinking And Sedimentation Rate Measurements In A Diatom Winter/Spring Bloom, Ulf Riebesell Jan 1989

Comparison Of Sinking And Sedimentation Rate Measurements In A Diatom Winter/Spring Bloom, Ulf Riebesell

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Sinking and sedimentation rates of a natural phytoplankton community were simultaneously measured during the course of a diatom winter/spring bloom in a 13m3 experimental mesocosm. Sinking rate was determined directly in settling columns and was calculated from sediment trap catches. The 2 methods yielded significantly different results. Whole-community as well as species- specific sinking rates varied over time. These variations were related to changes of the environmental conditions. Over a 26d study period, a total of 7.5g cm-2 was collected in the sediment traps. Viable phytoplankton cells were the primary component of the sedimented matter while zooplankton fecal …

The Regulation Of Sewage Discharge By Recreational Boats, Maureen E. Eldredge Jan 1989

The Regulation Of Sewage Discharge By Recreational Boats, Maureen E. Eldredge

Open Access Master's Theses

Federal legislation regulating sewage from recreational boats has existed since 1972 (The Clean Water Act). Since that time the regulations have failed to prevent untreated sewage from boats from being discharged into the Nation's waterways. This has caused conflicts over water quality, particularly in shellfish growing areas.

The regulatory system which exists to regulate sewage from recreational boats was analyzed for nine sources of possible regulatory failure. Seven of the nine were found to be operating. They include: lack of technology, lack of enforcement, lack of issue salience, negative attitudes on the part of the boaters, the economics of compliance, …

Acceleration Of Starvation- And Glycerol-Induced Myxospore Formation By Prior Heat Shock In Myxococcus Xanthus, Kevin P. Killeen, David R. Nelson Jan 1988

Acceleration Of Starvation- And Glycerol-Induced Myxospore Formation By Prior Heat Shock In Myxococcus Xanthus, Kevin P. Killeen, David R. Nelson

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The effect of heat shock on Myxococcus xanthus was investigated during both glycerol- and starvation-induced development. Cells heat shocked at 40 degrees C for 1 h prior to a development-inducing signal displayed an accelerated rate of myxospore formation at 30 degrees C. Additionally, M. xanthus cells heat shocked prior to glycerol induction formed a greater total number of myxospores when sporulation was complete than did control cells maintained at 30 degrees C. However, in starvation-induced fruiting cells the total number of myxospores in control and heat-shocked populations was about equal when fruiting body and myxospore formation was complete. When extended …

Assessing Liability For Damages Under Cercla: A New Approach For Providing Incentives For Pollution Avoidance, Thomas A. Grigalunas, James J. Opaluch Jan 1988

Assessing Liability For Damages Under Cercla: A New Approach For Providing Incentives For Pollution Avoidance, Thomas A. Grigalunas, James J. Opaluch

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

This paper examines the natural resource damage assessment regulations recently promulgated under CERCLA and their potential effectiveness. The regulations have a number of important characteristics, broad potential applicability, and their implementation has several novel features. For these reasons, the natural resource damage assessment regulations required by CERCLA potentially represent a major development in environmental policy. The regulations also may represent a major, and perhaps unprecedented, expansion of the use of economic incentives to control pollution. Examined within the paper are: the natural resource damage assessment framework provided by the Act, the conceptual and analytical underpinnings of the liability regulations developed …

Roles Of Motility, Chemotaxis, And Penetration Through And Growth In Intestinal Mucus In The Ability Of An Avirulent Strain Of Salmonella Typhimurium To Colonize The Large Intestine Of Streptomycin-Treated Mice, Beth A. Mccormick, Bruce A. D. Stocker, David C. Laux, Paul S. Cohen Jan 1988

Cohen

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Previously, it had been shown that an avirulent strain of Salmonella typhimurium, SL5316, with wild-type lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was a far better colonizer of the streptomycin-treated CD-1 mouse large intestine, was far more motile, did not bind to mouse intestinal mucus nearly as well as, but penetrated through a layer of intestinal mucus in vitro far better than an almost isogenic LPS-deficient transductant, SL5325. In the present investigation, a nonflagellated transductant, SL5681, and a nonchemotactic transductant, SL5784, were isolated from SL5316 and tested for relative colonizing ability versus SL5316 (smooth) and SL5325 (rough) in streptomycin-treated mice. In addition, the Salmonella …

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The complete amino acid sequences of a pair of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) prolactins (PRLs) were determined. The larger PRL of molecular mass 20,836 Da consists of 188 amino acid residues. The smaller PRL of molecular mass 19,584 Da is 11 residues shorter. On alignment of the two sequences, the 19.6-kDa PRL (tPRL177) has two conspicuous deletions on the NH2- terminal side of the disulfide bond which connects the first and second cysteine residues. The degree of similarity between the two PRL sequences is unexpectedly low (130 identical residues, 69%) compared with that between the variants …

Colonization Of The Streptomycin-Treated Mouse Large Intestine By A Human Fecal Escherichia Coli Strain: Role Of Adhesion To Mucosal Receptors, Elizabeth A. Wadolkowski, David C. Laux, Paul S. Cohen Jan 1988

Colonization Of The Streptomycin-Treated Mouse Large Intestine By A Human Fecal Escherichia Coli Strain: Role Of Adhesion To Mucosal Receptors, Elizabeth A. Wadolkowski, David C. Laux, Paul S. Cohen

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Escherichia coli F-18, a normal fecal isolate, was previously shown to be an excellent colonizer of the streptomycin-treated CD-1 mouse large intestine, whereas E. coli F-18col-, a derivative of E. coli F-18 that no longer makes the E. coli F-18 colicin, was shown to be a poor mouse colonizer. It was also shown that E. coli F-18 bound two to three times more soluble colonic mucus protein than did E. coli F-18col- and that a major receptor in CD-1 mouse colonic mucus was a 50.5-kilodalton glycoprotein. In the present investigation, an additional E. coli F-18 colonic mucus …

A Case For The Decentralization Of Tuna Management: The East Pacific Tuna Fishery, Mark Alexander Murray-Brown Jan 1988

A Case For The Decentralization Of Tuna Management: The East Pacific Tuna Fishery, Mark Alexander Murray-Brown

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The east pacific tuna fishery has been a highly controversial industry due to a variety of biological, economic and political factors. Tuna are a highly migratory species and are known to move across areas of the ocean that are claimed by different nations. The high economic value of the tuna fishery has enhanced the dispute over the positioning of many of these national boundaries. During the middle of the twentieth century international fishery organizations were created in an attempt to resolve many of the issues. The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) was created to make management recommendations to maintain the …

Dredging Management: A Comparative Analysis Of Mid-Sized U.S. North Atlantic Ports, Matthew H. Masters Jan 1988

Dredging Management: A Comparative Analysis Of Mid-Sized U.S. North Atlantic Ports, Matthew H. Masters

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Dredging management within the states of Rhode Island, Maine and Connecticut is examined through an analysis of the ports of Providence, Portland, and New Haven. These ports were selected from a field of 30 Atlantic Coast ports through a multivariate statistical analysis, based on similarities in size, function and geography. Each port's dredging history was compiled to illustrate the frequency and magnitude of dredging activity among the three states. Pertinent state laws, regulations and policies regarding dredging and dredged material disposal were reviewed in an attempt to identify similarities and differences. It was believed that differences among each state's regulatory …

The Dynamic Balance Between Experts And The Public In The Assessment Of Hazards: Ocean Incineration - The U.S. Experience, Sally J. Spadaro Jan 1988

The Dynamic Balance Between Experts And The Public In The Assessment Of Hazards: Ocean Incineration - The U.S. Experience, Sally J. Spadaro

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Understanding environmental threats posed as a byproduct of technology has become an important role for our federal governmental agencies. This study examined environmental hazard assessment in theory and in practice. Discussion established the unique nature of environmental hazard assessment as compared to financial or natural hazard assessment. This first section examined advantages and shortcomings of four methods to judge the tolerability of environmental hazards: Natural Baselines, Risk/Cost/Benefit Analysis, Revealed Preferences, and Expressed Preferences. The differences in perspectives between expert risk assessors and the lay public was highlighted. For the case of ocean incineration of hazardous wastes the dilemma faced by …

Academically-Sponsored Coastal Research Vessels In The New England Region: An Assessment Of Current Management And Implications For The Future, Brendan B. Mcavoy Jan 1988

Academically-Sponsored Coastal Research Vessels In The New England Region: An Assessment Of Current Management And Implications For The Future, Brendan B. Mcavoy

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In New England an informal communications network exists between coastal research vessel operating institutions. Vessel scheduling and operational support has been identified as adequate for the current amount of research being conducted within the region. However, societal shift towards coastal regions is prompting an increase in attention to research within the coastal zone. Current and pending federal initiatives are responding to this increased research need. This, in turn, is beginning to impose greater demands on coastal vessel sea-time. Therefore, a strengthening of the region's inter-institutional communications network may be warranted for the future in order to better coordinate coastal research …

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

A combined atmospheric chemistry-meteorology experiment, the Dynamics and Chemistry of the Marine Stratocumulus (DYCOMS), was carried out during the summer of 1985 over the eastern Pacific Ocean using the NCAR Electra aircraft. The objectives were to 1) study the budgets of several trace reactive species in a relatively pristine, steady-state, horizontally homogeneous, well-mixed boundary layer capped by a strong inversion and 2) study the formation, maintenance and dissipation of marine stratocumulus that persists off the California coast (as well as similar regions elsewhere) in summer. We obtained both mean and turbulence measurements of meteorological variables within and above the cloud-capped …
