The purpose of this study was to examine the long term relationship of childhood sexual abuse to school performance, perceptions of school ability, and adult functioning in college women. This investigation found that women who indicated a history of childhood sexual abuse had significantly more problems in psychosocial functioning and reported less social support than women who did not indicate childhood sexual abuse. Interestingly the sexually abused group (SA) did significantly better on 9th grade grade-point average (GPA) than the non-sexually abused group (NSA). However, this trend, though not significant, reversed itself by the 11th grade. In addition the NSA …

The bog copper butterfly (Lycaena epixanthe) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) inhabits patchily distributed open peatlands throughout the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. To examine the relationship between habitat patch geometry and occupancy by L. epixanthe in southern Rhode Island, I surveyed 37 apparently suitable bogs and fens for adult butterflies, and measured various aspects of habitat quality related to patch size and isolation. Host plant patch size, size of the nearest occupied host plant patch, and distance to the nearest occupied host plant patch contributed significantly to the discrimination of occupied from unoccupied sites. This study examines transportation strategies that should be considered as alternatives to use of the single occupant vehicle on and around the Kingston Campus of the University of Rhode Island. It includes the results of a URI commuter survey which was conducted in the course of this research, and it analyzes the extent to which current bus transit service is meeting the needs of the URI community. A questionnaire was mailed to the third party providers (n=313) registered with the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP), State Medicaid Programs and Blue Cross plans not listed with the NCPDP. The response rate was 41.5%. The respondents were evaluated for their demographics (number of prescriptions processed, number of subscribers, number of drug benefit models and type of third party) and pre approval process (if they required the provider to obtain pre approval, process of pre approval, time required for giving pre approval and person responsible for obtaining the pre approval). The phenomena of cardiac ischemia and reperfusion involve substantial, multifactorial pathophysiologic derangements, the attenuation of which is vital for the functional recovery and viability of the heart. It has been proposed that methylene blue (MB) may decrease the damage associated with ischemia and reperfusion, in part by the suppression of oxyradical generation and by the enhancement of ATP recovery. In the present study, we tested the effect of pretreating isolated working rat hearts with MB prior to imposing ischemia and reperfusion. The regulation of lipid biosynthesis in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by fumonisin B₁ was examined. Fumonisin B₁ inhibited the growth of yeast cells. Cells supplemented with fumonisin B₁ accumulated free sphinganine and phytosphingosine in a dose-dependent manner. The cellular concentration of ceramide was reduced in fumonisin B₁-supplemented cells. Ceramide synthase activity was found in yeast cell membranes and was inhibited by fumonisin B₁. Fumonisin B₁ inhibited the synthesis of the inositol-containing sphingo-lipids inositol phosphorylceramide, mannosylinositol phosphorylceramide, and mannosyldiinositol phosphorylceramide. This paper reviews the relevant state statutes dealing with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol on enforcement standards, which reveals some problems with the effectiveness of the drug provisions. In an effort to strengthen provisions in one state, the death certificates of 150 persons who died in motor vehicle accidents in the decade of the 1980s to date were reviewed to determine serum levels of any drugs revealed in the autopsy. These data have been analyzed in light of appropriate statutory prohibitions against driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The potential for driver impairment by drugs …

In other words, it addresses the question, "Are there such things as fictional objects, and if so what kind of being do they possess?" This study fulfilled a portion of an ongoing program at the Environmental Protection Agency (Narragansett, RI) to examine cumulative human impacts in New Bedford Harbor, Massachusetts. One of the many changes New Bedford Harbor has experienced since the 1600s has been an increasing urban population along with an increased volume of poorly treated wastewater and combined sewer overflows. This thesis proposes new, efficient techniques for implementing some members of the Hyperbolic class of time-frequency distributions (TFD). A new, efficient algorithm is proposed for the Altes-Marinovic Q-distribution. The algorithm is a generalization of the Fast Mellin transform implementation of the Bertrand P₀ distribution. Other TFDs of the Hyperbolic class, which are the smoothed versions of the Altes-Marinovic distribution, are implemented using Fast Mellin transform to compute the Altes distribution of the signal, which is then appropriately weighted and smoothed using numerical integration and first order linear interpolation techniques.
