Hydrogeology Of The Matunuck Hills Ponds South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Roberto Esquilin
Hydrogeology Of The Matunuck Hills Ponds South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Roberto Esquilin
Open Access Master's Theses
A detailed hydrogeological study has been applied to a series of adjacent ponds in the vicinity of the Matunuck Hills, South Kingstown, for a period of two and a half years. This study combined physical and chemical concepts in order to evaluate the surface-water/ground-water interactions, and to interpret the hydrogeologic system of the Matunuck Hills Ponds. Three different types of indicators were specifically used to assess the hydrology of the ponds: potentiometric technique, water budget calculations, and chemical analysis.
The potentiometric technique helps in determining the hydraulic gradient and evaluating the spatial distribution of recharge or discharge around the ponds. …
Strategies For Life In Flow: Tenacity, Morphometry, And Probability Of Dislodgment Of Two Mytilus Species, Emily C. Bell, John M. Gosline
Strategies For Life In Flow: Tenacity, Morphometry, And Probability Of Dislodgment Of Two Mytilus Species, Emily C. Bell, John M. Gosline
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The attachment strength of sessile intertidal organisms is continuously challenged by the hydrodynamic forces generated by breaking waves. This study explores mechanisms by which the attachment strength, or tenacity, can vary for one of the dominant competitors for space in this environment, the marine mussel. Tenacity was measured for 2 co-existing mussel species, Mytilus californianus and Mytilus trossulus, either solitary or within a bed (= bed mussels). The tenacity of M. californianus was higher than M. trossulus, due to increased byssal thread thickness, and the tenacity of solitary mussels was higher than bed mussels, due to the presence …

Growth Rates Of Planktonic And Newly Settled American Lobsters Homarusamericanus, Mary-Jane James-Pirri, J. Stanley Cobb
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Growth rates, as estimated by the RNA:DNA ratio, were determined for planktonic postlarvae and for recaptured and wild newly settled benthic stages (fifth and sixth instars) of the American lobster Homarus americanus. The mean growth rate of planktonic postlarvae in 1994 was 0.522 ± 0.247 mg protein d-1. This was significantly higher than planktonic growth rates observed in 1991 (0.449 ± 0.121 mg protein d-1) but not in 1992 (0.460 ± 0.144 mg protein d-1). The percentage of poorly nourished planktonic postlarvae, those with growth rates <0.220 mg protein d-1, ranged from 3 to 13% …0.220>

Expectations And Effectiveness Using Cd-Roms: What Do Patrons Want And How Satisfied Are They?, Cheryl A. Mccarthy, Sylvia C. Krausse, Arthur A. Little
Public Services Faculty Publications
As academic libraries wrestle with how to provide more CD-ROMs and more online remote access to databases to keep pace with demands, they first need to evaluate the effectiveness of their current services. This study identifies students’ preferences and effectiveness using CD-ROMs and assesses the whole CD-ROM environment at one university library. A questionnaire was used to ask students their preferences, confidence levels, skills, and training in searching CD-ROM databases, as well as their satisfaction with CD-ROM services (see the appendix). Analyses of the data revealed that users are satisfied and prefer CD-ROM databases over the print indices. Although students …
An Empirical Eigenfunction Analysis Of Sea Surface Temperatures In The Western North Atlantic, Richard Everson, Peter C. Cornillon, Lawrence Sirovich, Andrew Webber
An Empirical Eigenfunction Analysis Of Sea Surface Temperatures In The Western North Atlantic, Richard Everson, Peter C. Cornillon, Lawrence Sirovich, Andrew Webber
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The empirical orthogonal function decomposition is used to analyze time records of AVHRR sea surface temperature observations of the western North Atlantic from 32.9° to 43.6°N, 62.7° to 76.3°W. A manually declouded dataset covering the spring of 1985 is analyzed. The majority (80%) of the variance about the mean is accounted for by an empirical eigenfunction, which is identified with seasonal warming. This eigenfunction shows that the shelf water, excluding Georges Bank, warms the most rapidly; the surface water of the Gulf of Maine warms a little less rapidly and the Gulf Stream and Sargasso Sea surface water warm the …

Development Of A Muslim Religiosity Scale, Abdulaziz Abdurrahman Albelaikhi
Development Of A Muslim Religiosity Scale, Abdulaziz Abdurrahman Albelaikhi
Open Access Dissertations
The main focus of the study was the construction of a new scale for measuring religiosity among Muslims. Two other existing scales were also used. Utilizing 169 (108 male, 61 female) Saudi Arabian Muslim college students, an exploratory Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was employed on a set of questionnaire items intended to measure Islamic religiosity. Six components were extracted, which represented the religious dimensions of practice, societal value of religion, belief in central tenets, personal need for religion, reliance on practical guidance, and unquestioning acceptance.
Predictions regarding multidimensionality of Muslim religiosity were generally supported. However, the PCA-based scales developed in …
Training Caregivers To Intervene In The Exploratory Play Of Young Children With Developmental Delays, Susan L. Curley
Training Caregivers To Intervene In The Exploratory Play Of Young Children With Developmental Delays, Susan L. Curley
Open Access Dissertations
Play, particularly exploratory play, can be viewed as the arena in which a series of interactions between a child and the environment occur. However, children with developmental delays appear to be less able to fully engage in exploratory play and utilize the environmental information that such play provides (Krakow & Kopp, 1983). There is also preliminary evidence that caregivers can be trained to use behaviors that facilitate exploratory play when engaged with their children (Belsky, Goode, & Most, 1981). The purpose of the present study was to explore the potential of training caregivers to facilitate the exploratory play of developmentally …
Groundwater Nitrate Removal In Forested And Suburban Vegetated Riparian Wetland Soils: A Mesocosm Mass Balance Approach, Kelly L. Addy
Groundwater Nitrate Removal In Forested And Suburban Vegetated Riparian Wetland Soils: A Mesocosm Mass Balance Approach, Kelly L. Addy
Open Access Master's Theses
Although riparian zones can remove nitrate (NO3) from groundwater, the interaction between vegetation type, subsurface patches of elevated organic matter and NO3 removal rates is still uncertain. The goal of my study was to examine the effects of vegetation type on groundwater NO3 removal rates in poorly drained riparian subsoils with four treatments, two "forested" and two "suburban" treatments. I also examined the variability in NO3removal rates between riparian sites and the relationship between patches of elevated organic matter in the subsoil and groundwater NO3 removal rates. My study was based on a …
The Father's Role In Self-Concept Development, Jon Lopez Kimpton
The Father's Role In Self-Concept Development, Jon Lopez Kimpton
Open Access Dissertations
The present study was undertaken to provide information on the relationship between father involvement and multiple dimensions of a child's self-concept. The Father Involvement Scale (FIS), a measure of father involvement and substitute father involvement, was constructed for use in this research. Included in the study were 104 sixth and seventh grade middle school children (ages 11-14). Each were administered the Multidimensional Self Concept Scale (Bracken, 1994). Scores from the FIS were used to divide the participants into four groups. Results from a MANOVA yielded a significant main effect for substitute father involvement, but not father involvement. Potential reasons for …
Statistical Characterizations Of North Atlantic Subtropical Mode Water, Michael Aaron Alfultis
Statistical Characterizations Of North Atlantic Subtropical Mode Water, Michael Aaron Alfultis
Open Access Dissertations
Subtropical Mode Water (STMW) is a water mass formed in winter by convective mixing on the equatorward side of western boundary currents in the subtropical gyres. After the return of the seasonal and main pycnoclines. By characterizing STMW primarily at the density gradient minimum, previous studies were limited in their ability to describe STMW properties over large temporal and spatial scales. Rather than using a density-based characterization, the North Atlantic STMW layer was identified here by its much smaller temperature gradient relative to the more stratified seasonal and main thermoclines. By using a temperature-based characterization, this study was able to …
Evaluation Of Simulation Extracted Metals-Acid Volatile Sulfide (Sem-Avs) In Lacustrine Sediment (Lake Champlain), Estuarine Sediment (Narragansett Bay) And Under Laboratory Conditions, Elizabeth M. Lacey
Open Access Dissertations
In the process of development of sediment quality criteria, trace metal bioavailability is an essential consideration because different sediments can exhibit differing degrees of toxicity for the same concentration of contaminant. Various sediment phases are responsible for binding trace metals and rendering them non-bioavailable. In 1990, it was shown that acid volatile sulfide (AVS) is responsible for binding certain divalent metals on a molar basis. By measuring AVS and the simultaneously extracted metals (SEM), potential trace metal bioavailability may be determined. In this research, sediments from Lake Champlain and Narragansett Bay were analyzed by a variety of methods to determine …

Maternal-Infant Interaction In Infants With Colic, Lynne M. Andreozzi
Open Access Master's Theses
The experience of having an infant with colic may affect early interactions between the mother and infant. The present study investigated infant - mother interaction in infants with colic, excessive crying, and non-colic controls and their mothers. The Colic Symptom Checklist was used to identify infants between 4-6 weeks of age with colic (N=18), excessive crying (N=9), and controls without crying problems (N=13). The subjects were healthy, full-term normal infants recruited through pediatric referral. There were no differences between the three groups of infants for infant medical or family demographic characteristics. Face-to-face interaction was used to describe the caregiver's behavior, …
Initiating Coastal Management In Kenya And Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Strategic Approach, Mark Amaral
Initiating Coastal Management In Kenya And Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Strategic Approach, Mark Amaral
Open Access Master's Theses
Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) is a process that unites government and the community, science and management, sectoral and pubic interests to wisely protect and develop coastal ecosystems and resources. As funding for ICM continues to increase, investments are often made quickly, without adequate consultation with the stakeholders and host institutions. This can lead to programs and projects that lack focus and outstrip the host institution's capacity and capabilities. By thinking strategically about the current coastal management problems and pressures and developing a strategy document using an organized and strategic process, investment can be made wisely and at a scale that …

Local Efforts For Groundwater Protection: An Assessment Of Strategies Within The State And Federal Context South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Kathleen M. Murray
Open Access Master's Theses
The 1986 amendments to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1974 (42 USC 300f et seq.) placed additional requirements on states and municipalities to protect water supplies in a new way: The amendments mandate states to adopt wellhead protection programs. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is carrying out these requirements and, following federal guidelines, has adopted a program entailing requirements for most the 39 Rhode Island communities. Entitled the Rhode Island Wellhead Protection Program, DEM identified steps that State level departments, local water suppliers, and municipalities must follow to ensure continued potability of the state's …
