Predicting Mathematics Performance: A Structural Equation Model, Linda N. Bruno
Predicting Mathematics Performance: A Structural Equation Model, Linda N. Bruno
Open Access Dissertations
The relationships among personality and socialization factors that may contribute to mathematics performance were investigated using structural equation modeling. Five nested models were examined: a full model, a mediational model, a model eliminating the mediator, a regression model, and a model combining the significant paths from other models. Preliminary analyses (i.e., MANOVAS, follow-up univariate ANOVAS) revealed that men reported significantly higher math self-efficacy than women. Evaluation of the structural models identified the full model as the best representation of the data. This model examined the relationships among gender, gender schema, math anxiety, math self-efficacy, math attitude, math experience, math socialization, …

(Re)Envisioned (Pre)History: Feminism, Goddess Politics, And Readership Analysis Of The Clan Of The Cave Bear And The Valley Of The Horses, Glenna M. Andrade
Open Access Dissertations
Jean M. Auel's popular novels, The Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of the Horses, are examined via theories of political thought (history, economics, power), feminist theory (oppression, sex/gender roles), and popular literature's (genre) appeals to various 80s readership communities. Chapter Two draws from historical interests in women's myth to show that 70-80s religious and anthropo-archeological revisionism promote an 80s goddess theory in support of 70- 80s feminism; nonetheless, from a 90s vantage, Dani-goddess theorizing is problematized by universalism, teleology, and gender stereotyping. Chapter Three examines Clan's politics, religion, gender roles and the pitfalls of mythmaking to Clan's …
Quantitative Methods For Assessing Change: Application To Condom Use, Kerry E. Evers
Quantitative Methods For Assessing Change: Application To Condom Use, Kerry E. Evers
Open Access Dissertations
This study attempts to understand more about how to quantitatively assess longitudinal change within the Transtheoretical Model applied to the area of condom use among college students. A total of 215 sexually active male and female undergraduate students completed both assessments one month apart. Measurement development was conducted on the Condom Use URICA scale, which was then used in a cluster analysis. A four cluster solution was reliably replicated across two random samples (R2=.99), and the clusters were then examined in terms of their external validity using MANOVAs. The four clusters showed significant differences on variables associated with …
Controlled Drug Delivery From A Novel Injectable In Situ Formed Biodegradable Plga Microsphere System, Rajeev Jain
Controlled Drug Delivery From A Novel Injectable In Situ Formed Biodegradable Plga Microsphere System, Rajeev Jain
Open Access Dissertations
A novel method for in situ preparation of injectable biodegradable microspheres from the copolymer poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) without incorporating unacceptable organic solvents is described. The delivery system is a dispersion of PLGA microglobules ("premicrospheres" or "embryonic microspheres") in an acceptable vehicle mixture (continuous phase) and whose integrity is maintained by use of appropriate stabilizers. A solution of PLGA. triacetin, drug, PEG 400, and Tween 80 (Oil Phase 1) are added dropwise with continuous homogenization to miglyol 812-Span 80 solution (Oil Phase 2), thereby inducing phase separation (coacervation) of PLGA and forming PLGA microglobules (containing the drug) dispersed in the …
Radium-226 As A Tracker Of Ground Water Input To The Coastal Waters Of Southern Rhode Island, Margaret K. Scott
Radium-226 As A Tracker Of Ground Water Input To The Coastal Waters Of Southern Rhode Island, Margaret K. Scott
Open Access Master's Theses
Submarine ground water discharge (SGWD) represents a significant, yet diffuse and largely neglected source of fresh water and dissolved constituents to the coastal environment. Quantification of this term therefore proves important with respect to coastal hydrological and geochemical mass balances. In order to better constrain SGWD to southern Rhode Island's coastal waters, the naturally-occurring radionuclide 226Ra was used as a tracer of ground water input.
Activities of 226Ra were determined in river water, salt ponds, coastal ocean and ground water in southern Rhode Island during the summer of 1997 (June-August). Coastal lagoons and shelf waters were analyzed to …

Effects Of Zooplankton Size And Concentration And Light Intensity On The Feeding Behavior Of Atlantic Mackerel Scomber Scombrus, William K. Macy, Sandra J. Sutherland, Edward G. Durbin
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus had low clearance rates when fed older stage copepodites of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus at high concentrations and high clearance rates at low concentrations. These rates were consistent with filter feeding at high concentrations and particulate feeding at low concentrations. Intermediate and small copepods presented together at high concentrations were cleared at lower rates than the large C. finmarchicus, suggesting lower filtration efficiencies. Intermediate and small copepods were presented over a range of light intensities (8.2 x 10-8 to 1.6 x 100 µE m-2 s-1). Feeding rate did not change …

Response Of Primary Producers To Nutrient Enrichment In A Shallow Estuary, Eleanor H. Kinney, Charles T. Roman
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Shallow coastal systems worldwide are exhibiting increased algal growth in response to nutrient enrichment. This study evaluates primary production patterns in an estuarine system (Bass Harbor Marsh, ME, USA) receiving low levels of anthropogenic nitrogen. Biomass, areal coverage and in situ oxygen production of green macroalgae, Ruppia maritima, and phytoplankton were measured over a growing season to determine net ecosystem production. Macroalgae and R. maritima exhibited seasonal biomass curves with early summer peaks; however, peak biomass of macroalgae [150 g dry weight (wt) m-2] was substantially greater than R. maritima (33 g dry wt m-2). …

Pseudomonas aeruginosa AC869, a 3,5-dichlorobenzoate degrader, is a mouse pathogen and has a reported 50% lethal dose (LD50) of 1.05 x 107 CFU when given intranasally to C3H/HeJ mice (S. E. George, M. J. Kohan, M. I. Gilmour, M. S. Taylor, H. G. Brooks, J. P. Creason, and L. D. Claxton, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 59:3585– 3591, 1993). AC869 was serotyped as O6 when grown in CD-1 mouse cecal and lung mucus but could not be assigned an O serotype when grown in Luria broth (LB). After growth in mouse cecal mucus, a less virulent mutant, AC869 11, …
Evidence For Cholinergic Inhibitory And Serotonergic Excitatory Neuromuscular Transmission In The Heart Of The Bivalve Mercenaria Mercenaria, Kiyoaki Kuwasawa, Robert A. Hill
Evidence For Cholinergic Inhibitory And Serotonergic Excitatory Neuromuscular Transmission In The Heart Of The Bivalve Mercenaria Mercenaria, Kiyoaki Kuwasawa, Robert A. Hill
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The heart of Mercenaria mercenaria is innervated bilaterally at the atria. A pair of cardiac nerves arise as a branch of the cerebro-visceral connective and run to the posterior end of the junction between each atrium and its efferent branchial vessel. Innervation evidently spreads over the heart, since both inhibitory and excitatory junctional potentials (IJPs and EJPs) can be recorded from the atria, the atrio-ventricular (AV) valve or the ventricle.
The cardiac nerves contain inhibitory and excitatory axons. Neural stimulation can cause increases in the frequency or amplitude of beating, depending on the strength and frequency of stimulation. Electrical stimulation …

Cysteine-to-alanine replacements in the Escherichia coli SoxR protein and the role of the [2Fe-2S] centers in transcriptional act. Nucleic Acids Research, 25(8), 1469-1475.The Escherichia coli soxRS regulon activates oxidative stress and antibiotic resistance genes in two transcriptional stages. SoxR protein becomes activated in cells exposed to excess superoxide or nitric oxide and then stimulates transcription of the soxS gene, whose product in turn activates ≥10 regulon promoters. Purified SoxR protein is a homodimer containing a pair of [2Fe-2S] centers essential for soxS transcription in …
