Understanding The Relationship Between Food Variety, Food Intake, And Energy Balance, Hollie A. Raynor, Maya Vadiveloo
Understanding The Relationship Between Food Variety, Food Intake, And Energy Balance, Hollie A. Raynor, Maya Vadiveloo
Nutrition Faculty Publications
Purpose of Review:
In accordance with US dietary guidance, incorporating variety into the diet can align with energy balance, though greater food variety in some categories may make energy balance more challenging. Thus, experimental and epidemiologic evidence is summarized on the relationship between food variety, food and energy intake, and energy balance.
Recent Findings:
Lab-based, experimental research consistently demonstrates that greater variety within foods or sensory characteristics of food increases food and energy intake within an eating occasion. Epidemiologic evidence is less consistent, potentially driven by differing methodologies, particularly in defining and measuring food variety. Moreover, the effect of variety …

"They Chase Us Like Dogs": Exploring The Vulnerabilities Of "Ladyboys" In The Cambodian Sex Trade, Jarrett D. Davis, Glenn Miles
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
While the vulnerability of women and girls continues to be the subject of research and concern among social service providers, few attempts have been made to understand the vulnerabilities and lived experiences of transgender persons in the sex industry. Among the studies that have been done, most have focused on sexual health and their likelihood to contract or spread HIV/AIDS, often ignoring other potential vulnerabilities. This study aims to provide a broad baseline of data on the perspectives and experiences of transgendered persons in the sex trade in Phnom Penh, allowing for a more nuanced understanding of their needs, and …

A Comment On Priors For Bayesian Occupancy Models, Joseph Northrup, Brian D. Gerber
A Comment On Priors For Bayesian Occupancy Models, Joseph Northrup, Brian D. Gerber
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Understanding patterns of species occurrence and the processes underlying these patterns is fundamental to the study of ecology. One of the more commonly used approaches to investigate species occurrence patterns is occupancy modeling, which can account for imperfect detection of a species during surveys. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of Bayesian modeling in ecology, which includes fitting Bayesian occupancy models. The Bayesian framework is appealing to ecologists for many reasons, including the ability to incorporate prior information through the specification of prior distributions on parameters. While ecologists almost exclusively intend to choose priors so that they are …
Tumor Microenvironment Interactions: Forcing Cancer Progression, Michelle Dawson
Tumor Microenvironment Interactions: Forcing Cancer Progression, Michelle Dawson
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
Many of the hallmarks associated with cancer, including unlimited replicative potential, apoptotic evasion, and tissue invasion and metastasis, can be linked to abnormal cytoskeletal or matrix mechanics – important biophysical parameters. A common feature of these biophysical interactions is the transmission of force from the extracellular matrix to the internal cytoskeleton, which forms the structure of the cell. My lab recently showed that increased traction forces transmitted from the internal cytoskeleton to the external environment correlate with increased cancer cell motility, proliferation, and chemoresistance; this was demonstrated in mechanosensitive breast and ovarian cancer cells that respond to changes in matrix …

Dendrimer Nanocarriers And Their Aerosol Formulations For The Delivery Of Therapeutics To And Through The Lungs, Sandro R.P. Da Rocha
Dendrimer Nanocarriers And Their Aerosol Formulations For The Delivery Of Therapeutics To And Through The Lungs, Sandro R.P. Da Rocha
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
In this presentation we discuss how the chemistry of dendrimer nanocarriers can be used to modulate their interaction with the pulmonary epithelium and how such knowledge can be used to develop efficient strategies for local or systemic delivery of drugs to and through the lungs. We also discuss particle engineering approaches that allow us to design portable oral inhalation formulations of the dendrimer nanocarriers with aerosols conducive to deep lung deposition. We employ a range of experimental and computational tools to probe the system at various size scales, from atomic to molecular to nano and micron, in order to design …

In order to identify an object in video, a comparison with an exemplar object is typically needed. In this paper, we discuss the methodology used to identify an object detected in underwater video that was recorded during an investigation into Amelia Earhart's purported crash site. A computer aided design (CAD) model of the suspected aircraft component was created based on measurements made from orthogonally rectified images of a reference aircraft, and validated against historical photographs of the subject aircraft prior to the crash. The CAD model was then superimposed on the underwater video, and specific features on the object were …

The nutritional symbiosis between coral hosts and photosynthetic dinoflagellates is fundamental to the functioning of coral reefs. Rising seawater temperatures destabilize this relationship, resulting in drastic declines in world-wide coral cover. Thermal history is thought to play an important role in shaping a coral's response to subsequent thermal stress. Here, we exposed Pocillopora damicornis to two thermal acclimation regimes (ambient vs. warm) and compared the effect that acclimation had on the coral holobiont's response to a subsequent seven day heat stress event. We conducted daily physiological measurements at the holobiont level (gross photosynthesis, respiration, host protein content, symbiont density and …
Are Metabolic Pathways Nash Equilibria?, Angelo Lucia
Are Metabolic Pathways Nash Equilibria?, Angelo Lucia
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
Flux balance analysis (FBA) has been the mainstay for understanding metabolic networks for many years. However, recently Lucia and DiMaggio have shown that metabolic pathways are more correctly modeled using game theory, specifically Nash Equilibrium, because it captures the natural competition among enzymes. The key ideas behind the Nash equilibrium approach to metabolic pathway analysis are that
1. Enzymes are treated as players in a multi-player game.
2. The objective or payoff function for each player is a constrained nonlinear programming (NLP) problem where each player (enzyme) minimizes the Gibbs free energy of the reaction it catalyzes subject to element …

The discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents in 1977 challenged our views of ecosystem functioning and yet, the research conducted at these extreme and logistically challenging environments still continues to reveal unique biological processes. Here, we report for the first time, a unique behavior where the deep-sea skate, Bathyraja spinosissima, appears to be actively using the elevated temperature of a hydrothermal vent environment to naturally “incubate” developing egg-cases. We hypothesize that this behavior is directly targeted to accelerate embryo development time given that deep-sea skates have some of the longest egg incubation times reported for the animal kingdom. Similar egg …

Glycation is associated with several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), where it potentiates the aggregation and toxicity of proteins such as β-amyloid (Aβ). Published studies support the anti-glycation and neuroprotective effects of several polyphenol-rich fruits, including berries, which are rich in anthocyanins. Herein, blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and strawberry extracts were evaluated for: (1) total phenolic and anthocyanins contents, (2) free radical (DPPH) scavenging and reactive carbonyl species (methylglyoxal; MGO) trapping, (3) anti-glycation (using BSA-fructose and BSA-MGO models), (4) anti-Aβ aggregation (using thermal- and MGO-induced fibrillation models), and, (5) murine microglia (BV-2) neuroprotective properties. Berry crude …

Findprimarypairs: An Efficient Algorithm For Predicting Element-Transferring Reactant/Product Pairs In Metabolic Networks, Jon Lund Steffensen, Keith M. Dufault-Thompson, Ying Zhang
Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications
The metabolism of individual organisms and biological communities can be viewed as a network of metabolites connected to each other through chemical reactions. In metabolic networks, chemical reactions transform reactants into products, thereby transferring elements between these metabolites. Knowledge of how elements are transferred through reactant/product pairs allows for the identification of primary compound connections through a metabolic network. However, such information is not readily available and is often challenging to obtain for large reaction databases or genome-scale metabolic models. In this study, a new algorithm was developed for automatically predicting the element-transferring reactant/product pairs using the limited information available …

Two Decades Of Commercializing Medical Devices Using Nanotechnology, Thomas Weber
Two Decades Of Commercializing Medical Devices Using Nanotechnology, Thomas Weber
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
There is an acute shortage of organs due to disease, trauma, congenital defects, and most importantly, age related maladies. The synthetic materials used in tissue engineering applications today are typically composed of millimeter or micron sized particles and/or fiber dimensions. Although human cells are on the micron scale, their individual components, e.g. proteins, are composed of nanometer features. By modifying only the nanofeatures on material surfaces without changing surface chemistry, it is possible to increase tissue growth of any human tissue by controlling the endogenous adsorption of adhesive proteins onto the material surface. In addition, our group has shown that …
