The Yosakoi Festival And Rural Revitalization In Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, Amy L. Kostka
The Yosakoi Festival And Rural Revitalization In Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, Amy L. Kostka
Senior Honors Projects
Japan has been experiencing a population decline in rural areas since post World War II. Rural prefectures including Kōchi have been participating in nationwide efforts as well as local efforts to maintain population and hopefully attract more people to these areas. These efforts have been collectively categorized under the term rural revitalization. Rural revitalization has many aims: to encourage pride in local cultural practices, to attract tourists and new residents, and to boost local economies. In this study I examined how a festival might assist in rural revitalization efforts. Exploring the literature involving revitalization efforts provided the scaffolding for my …

Phenology is the study of seasonally timed developmental events that are driven by environmental cues. Phenolic compounds and terpenoids are the two main classes of secondary metabolites present in conifer needles, and speaking generally, they correlate with needle age. Understanding the phenology of secondary metabolites is important, since variation in these compounds can affect a tree’s resistance to pest and pathogen attack. Terpenoids function in a wide array of ecological processes vital to conifer survival, including regulating forest dynamics through allelopathic inhibition of seed germination, altering rates of soil nutrient cycling and nitrification, and conferring resistance to pathogenic fungi and …

Background
Few studies have evaluated the long-term effects of nutritional supplementation during the first 1000 d of life. We previously reported that maternal and child lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS) increased child length by 18 mo. Objective
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of LNS on later growth and body composition at 4–6 y of age. Design
This was a follow-up of children in the International Lipid-based Nutrient Supplements (iLiNS)-DYAD trial in Ghana. Women (n = 1320) at ≤20 weeks of gestation were randomly assigned to: 1) iron and folic acid during pregnancy and 200 …

In seed plants, cellulose is synthesized by rosette‐shaped cellulose synthesis complexes (CSCs) that are obligate hetero‐oligomeric, comprising three non‐interchangeable cellulose synthase (CESA) isoforms. The moss Physcomitrella patens has rosette CSCs and seven CESAs, but its common ancestor with seed plants had rosette CSCs and a single CESA gene. Therefore, if P. patens CSCs are hetero‐oligomeric, then CSCs of this type evolved convergently in mosses and seed plants. Previous gene knockout and promoter swap experiments showed that PpCESAs from class A (PpCESA3 and PpCESA8) and class B (PpCESA6 and PpCESA7) have non‐redundant functions in secondary cell wall cellulose deposition in leaf …

Review: Crash Course In Media Literacy, Faith Rogow
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Forced by its format to distill a subject area’s central tenets into just a few sessions, a “crash course” should be an excellent place to uncover the essential elements of a topic or field. Viewed through that lens, Complexly’s YouTube offering, “Crash Course in Media Literacy,” provides an illuminating, if sometimes confounding opportunity for reflection.

Most clinically available antipsychotic drugs (APDs) bind dopamine D2 receptors (D2R) at therapeutic concentrations, and it is thought that they suppress psychotic symptoms by serving as competitive antagonists of dopamine at D2R. Here, we present data that demonstrate that APDs act independently of dopamine at an intracellular pool of D2R to enhance transport of D2R to the cell surface and suggest that APDs can act as pharmacological chaperones at D2R. Among the first- and secondgeneration APDs that we tested, clozapine exhibited the lowest efficacy for translocating D2R to the cell surface. Thus, our observations could provide a cellular explanation for …

Bacteria that carry out many processes of the nitrogen cycle inhabit estuarine sediments. Denitrification is known to be a dominant process causing estuarine sediments to behave as net nitrogen sinks. However, measurements of nitrogen fluxes in the sediments of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA, have at times revealed high rates of net nitrogen (N2) fixation. Whereas changes in primary production, in magnitude and phenology, within Narragansett Bay have been identified as possible causes for these changes in nitrogen cycling within the benthos, a factor that has not been examined thus far is seasonal hypoxia. Since anaerobic diazotrophs figure so prominently …
The Development Of A Fecal Glucocorticoid Metabolite Assay To Assess Stress In Captive Breeding Populations Of New England Cottontail Rabbits, Kianna Lee Taylor
The Development Of A Fecal Glucocorticoid Metabolite Assay To Assess Stress In Captive Breeding Populations Of New England Cottontail Rabbits, Kianna Lee Taylor
Senior Honors Projects
The topic for this research project was based on the problem of the diminishing population of the wild New England Cottontail rabbits. Over the last 50 years, the population of these once very common rabbits has decreased to only inhabit New England and parts of New York (1). This is less than one-fifth of the geographic range they once inhabited (1). Roger Williams Park Zoo currently has a New England Cottontail breeding program that has experienced limited success, which may be caused by the domestic environment into which this wild species is being introduced. The central objective of this study …

How A Cell Knows Where To Divide: Oscillation Of Mind In Vivo, Colby Ferreira

Over two-million people in the United States are infected by antibiotic resistant bacteria each year. Of this number 23,000 die from these infections and other complications. Due to this, novel antibiotic targets are constantly being investigated. One process in prokaryotes that holds promise is cellular division. Bacterial cells grow and reproduce using a series of proteins known as the cell division machinery. This machinery enables the division of the parental cell into two identical daughter cells. The cell division machinery is similar between bacterial taxa, making it an ideal target for new classes of antibiotics. Therefore, understanding the molecular mechanisms …
The Effect Of Music, Art, Photo, Animal Assisted, And Alternative Therapies On Quality Of Life In Patients With Dementia: A Systematic Review, Angela Ferlo
Senior Honors Projects
Dementia is a devastating set of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, and more, with a few theories of cause, but no certainties. One major theory behind Alzheimer’s disease involves a deficit of an important neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, in the brain. Few pharmacologic options are available to treat the symptoms or slow the progression of dementia, and the options we do have are indicated for Alzheimer’s disease. Most of the pharmacologic options for Alzheimer’s disease work by increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the brain, but none offer a cure. Often, dementia leaves the person …

A child’s endowment is a reflection of his/her genetic makeup and the conditions faced in early life. Parents build on their child’s endowment by investing resources in their child, and together, a child’s endowment and subsequent investments act as input into important later-life outcomes. A positive or negative shock to a child’s endowment can have a direct biological effect on a child’s long-term outcomes but may also affect parents’ decisions about investments in the health and human capital of their children. Using follow-up data collected several years after a randomized trial in Ghana, we explored whether maternal and child supplementation …

Transboundary marine species have an increased risk of overexploitation as management regimes and enforcement can vary among states. The complex geopolitical layout of exclusive economic zones (EEZs) in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) introduces the potential for migratory species to cross multiple boundaries, consequently a lack of scientific data could complicate regional management. In the current study, we highlight both the relative lack of spatial data available in the WIO, and the prevalence of transboundary movements in species that have previously been studied in the region. Five tiger sharks Galeocerdo cuvier were tracked with near real‐time positioning (SPOT) satellite tags …

The North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES) is an interdisciplinary investigation to improve understanding of Earth's ocean ecosystem-aerosol-cloud system. Specific overarching science objectives for NAAMES are to (1) characterize plankton ecosystem properties during primary phases of the annual cycle and their dependence on environmental forcings, (2) determine how these phases interact to recreate each year the conditions for an annual plankton bloom, and (3) resolve how remote marine aerosols and boundary layer clouds are influenced by plankton ecosystems. Four NAAMES field campaigns were conducted in the western subarctic Atlantic between November 2015 and April 2018, with each campaign …

"Baby Factories": Exploitation Of Women In Southern Nigeria, Jacinta Chiamaka Nwaka, Akachi Odoemene
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Despite the writings of feminist thinkers and efforts of other advocates of feminism to change the dominant narratives on women, exploitation of women is a fact that has remained endemic in various parts of the world, and particularly in Africa. Nigeria is one of those countries in Africa where women are largely exposed to varying degrees of exploitation. This paper examines the development and proliferation of baby-selling centers in southern Nigeria and its impacts on and implication for women in Nigeria. It demonstrates how an attempt to give protection to unwed pregnant girls has metamorphosed into “baby harvesting” and selling …
