Understanding The Relationship Between Food Variety, Food Intake, And Energy Balance, Hollie A. Raynor, Maya Vadiveloo
Understanding The Relationship Between Food Variety, Food Intake, And Energy Balance, Hollie A. Raynor, Maya Vadiveloo
Nutrition Faculty Publications
Purpose of Review:
In accordance with US dietary guidance, incorporating variety into the diet can align with energy balance, though greater food variety in some categories may make energy balance more challenging. Thus, experimental and epidemiologic evidence is summarized on the relationship between food variety, food and energy intake, and energy balance.
Recent Findings:
Lab-based, experimental research consistently demonstrates that greater variety within foods or sensory characteristics of food increases food and energy intake within an eating occasion. Epidemiologic evidence is less consistent, potentially driven by differing methodologies, particularly in defining and measuring food variety. Moreover, the effect of variety …

Short-Term Thermal Acclimation Modifies The Metabolic Condition Of The Coral Holobiont, Emma M. Gibbin, Thomas Kreuger, Hollie M. Putnam, Katie L. Barrot, Julia Bodin, Ruth D. Gates, Anders Meibom

The nutritional symbiosis between coral hosts and photosynthetic dinoflagellates is fundamental to the functioning of coral reefs. Rising seawater temperatures destabilize this relationship, resulting in drastic declines in world-wide coral cover. Thermal history is thought to play an important role in shaping a coral's response to subsequent thermal stress. Here, we exposed Pocillopora damicornis to two thermal acclimation regimes (ambient vs. warm) and compared the effect that acclimation had on the coral holobiont's response to a subsequent seven day heat stress event. We conducted daily physiological measurements at the holobiont level (gross photosynthesis, respiration, host protein content, symbiont density and …

Intergenerational service-learning in higher education positively affects older adults and students, but little is known about the effectiveness of interdisciplinary, reverse mentoring programs that use technology as the medium of bringing generations together. This study describes an intergenerational service-learning program that utilizes reverse mentoring within higher education, the "Engaging Generations Program," at a midsized public university in New England where students help older adults learn about technology, and students gain communication and teaching skills. In this article, we outline how the program was implemented, present quantitative data on participation outcomes for students and older adults and qualitative data from older …

Feeding Island Dreams: Exploring The Relationship Between Food Security And Agritourism In The Caribbean, Adelle Thomas, Amelia Moore, Michael Edwards
Feeding Island Dreams: Exploring The Relationship Between Food Security And Agritourism In The Caribbean, Adelle Thomas, Amelia Moore, Michael Edwards
Marine Affairs Faculty Publications
Caribbean islands have increasingly turned to tourism as a pathway for economic advancement, often to the detriment of other industries, particularly agriculture. The influx of millions of tourists to these island destinations increases food demand, escalates food importation, and oftentimes results in food insecurity. Agritourism, an alternative tourism form, has been proposed as a way to stimulate domestic food production and increase food security. This article provides a selective examination of the possibilities of relationships between agritourism and food security in the context of a specific Caribbean island: New Providence, Bahamas. Drawing from semi-structured interviews and site visits with over …

Can Darapsa Myron (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) Successfully Use The Invasive Plant Ampelopsis Brevipedunculata As A Food Resource?, Alex K. Baranowski, Evan L. Preisser
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Although biological invasions are generally thought to negatively impact native fauna, native herbivores that can utilize invasive plants may benefit. The East Coast of the United States has been invaded by the vitaceous plant Ampelopsis brevipedunculata. The invaded range of A. brevipedunculata overlaps with that of the native Vitis labrusca, a closely-related species that is a host plant for the native moth Darapsa myron (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). We reared D. myron larvae on either V. labrusca or A. brevipedunculata to assess whether development and survival differed on the two plant species. Larval growth and survival to pupation was only …
Dewey’S Thought On Education And Social Change, Ignacio Perez-Ibanez
Dewey’S Thought On Education And Social Change, Ignacio Perez-Ibanez
Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications
Dewey published his article “Education and Social Change” in 1937. His preoccupation with this issue is a constant theme in his works, which are infused with ideas about the role that education and, most specifically, our school system have in the transformation of society. His thought has had a tremendous influence on the work of later educational philosophers. He believed in a more democratic, just, free, and peaceful world, where civil liberties and human rights are respected. Education’s main goal should be to create individuals who grasp the complexity and broader implications of social issues and who also feel empowered …

Community-Based Childhood Obesity Prevention Intervention For Parents Improves Health Behaviors And Food Parenting Practices Among Hispanic, Low-Income Parents, Laura Otterbach, Noereem Z. Mena, Geoffrey Greene, Colleen A. Redding, Anne S. De Groot, Alison Tovar
Nutrition Faculty Publications
Background: Given the current prevalence of childhood obesity among Hispanic populations, and the importance of parental feeding behaviors, we aimed to assess the impact of the evidence-based Healthy Children, Healthy Families (HCHF) intervention on responsive food parenting practices (FPPs) in a low-income Hispanic population.
Methods: This community-based pilot study used a non-experimental pre/post within-subjects design. Parents (n = 94) of children aged 3–11 years old were recruited to participate in an 8-week, weekly group-based intervention. The intervention was delivered to nine groups of parents by trained paraprofessional educators over a two-year period. Children participated in a separate curriculum that …

Background: Involving groups of community stakeholders (e.g., steering committees) to lead community-wide health interventions appears to support multiple outcomes ranging from policy and systems change to individual biology. While numerous tools are available to measure stakeholder characteristics, many lack detail on reliability and validity, are not context specific, and may not be sensitive enough to capture change over time. This study describes the development and reliability of a novel survey to measure Stakeholder-driven Community Diffusion via assessment of stakeholders’ social networks, knowledge, and engagement about childhood obesity prevention.
Methods: This study was completed in three phases. Phase 1 included conceptualization …
