From Social Marketing To Societal Perversion: History Of Hometown Tax In Japan, Yuichiro Hidaka, Kosuke Mizukoshi

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This paper considers social marketing from a critical perspective. The paper traces the history of the donation system named ‘hometown tax’ that the Japanese government introduced to promote local revitalization of relatively marginal communities. Owing to the lavish reciprocal gifts to “donors” by the administrators of these communities, the system resulted in a quasi-market that allowed donors to avoid paying taxes and to receive special benefits. Our analysis reveals the divergence of the intents and effects of this social marketing intervention. The findings indicate that during social marketing attempts to carry out effective and well-intentioned interventions, which social marketing research …

Public Health Faculty Publications

Background

Physical inactivity (PIA) is a mortality risk factor defined as performing lower levels of physical activity than recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). After 2002, the WHO released the WHA55.23 Resolution and the Global Strategy which produced several changes in policymaking, but with no subsequent analyses of the impact of these changes in European Union (EU) policymaking while examining PIA prevalence.

Methods

PIA of 31,946 adults as a whole sample and country-by-country were analyzed in the 2002 and 2005 EU Special Eurobarometers. PIA prevalence between countries was performed with the χ2 test and PIA between both years and …

Mucuna pruriens (Mucuna) has been prescribed in Ayurveda for various brain ailments including ‘kampavata’ (tremors) or Parkinson’s disease (PD). While Mucuna is a well-known natural source of levodopa (L-dopa), published studies suggest that other bioactive compounds may also be responsible for its anti-PD effects. To investigate this hypothesis, an L-dopa reduced (Caenorhabditis elegans, and Drosophila melanogaster models. In BV-2 cells, MPE (12.5–50 μg/mL) reduced hydrogen peroxide-induced cytotoxicity (15.7−18.6%), decreased reactive oxygen species production (29.1−61.6%), and lowered lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide species release by 8.9–60%. MPE (12.5−50 μg/mL) mitigated SH-SY5Y cell apoptosis by 6.9−40.0% in a non-contact co-culture assay with …

Exploring How The Home Environment Influences Eating And Physical Activity Habits Of Low-Income, Latino Children Of Predominantly Immigrant Families: A Qualitative Study, Ana Cristina Lindsay, Sherrie F. Wallington, Faith D. Lees, Mary L. Greaney

Public Health Faculty Publications

Latinos are the largest and fastest growing minority population group in the United States, and children in low-income Latino families are at elevated risk of becoming overweight or having obesity. A child’s home is an important social environment in which he/she develops and maintains dietary and physical activity (PA) habits that ultimately impact weight status. Previous research suggests the parents are central to creating a home environment that facilitates or hinders the development of children’s early healthy eating and PA habits. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore low-income Latino parents’ beliefs, parenting styles, and parenting practices related …

Background

Since the adoption of United Nations’ Sustainable Goal 4.2 to ensure that all children have access to quality early child development (ECD) so that they are ready for primary education, the demand for valid ECD assessments has increased in contexts where they do not yet exist. The development of early language ability is important for school readiness. Our objective was to evaluate the validity of a method to develop vocabulary checklists in new languages to assess early language development, based on the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories.

Methods

Through asking mothers of young children what words their children say and …

The high numbers of adults who do not engage in enough physical activity or who are completely sedentary, are at higher risk than others for health illnesses and complications. However, many individuals are taking initiative and control of their health and well-being as a result of the copious amount of information available on the internet and major technological advancements. Individuals are self-tracking their health with wearable technology such as Fitbit, Nike, Garmin, and Jawbone among many others which can track steps/distance, steps climbed, heart rate, caloric burn, and sleep. In the last decade, these technologies have become very popular and …

Multivitamin Usage And Anemia In College Students, Jordan Balletto May 2018

Multivitamin Usage And Anemia In College Students, Jordan Balletto

Senior Honors Projects

Multivitamin usage has been shown to be significantly prevalent in the United States amongst adult populations. Recent data suggests that women are more likely than men to regularly consume a multivitamin, and that physically active individuals are more likely to take a multivitamin than those who live sedentary lifestyles. However, there are important, documented behavioral tendencies exhibited by college students that set them apart from the general adult population in terms of dietary intake. College students often partake in poor eating habits such as regularly skipping meals, eating out frequently, eating at fast food restaurants, and snacking on processed foods. …

Leadership Development In The Nursing Student, Jessica Shaw May 2018

Leadership Development In The Nursing Student, Jessica Shaw

Senior Honors Projects

I am your typical type A honors nursing student. In several of my clinical courses, I received constructive criticism regarding my performance. The common theme throughout each rotation was leadership, or the lack thereof. I was itching to do something to break the trend. In our syllabi under expected course outcomes it said things like, “integrate principles of leadership,” and, “assume a leadership role.” To me, this was far too vague and there had never been a mention in the syllabi or the classroom of how leadership is defined or what it should look like in the nursing field. My …

Vegan in College

Simple, Affordable, Healthy Meals for Students

For the entirety of my college career I have led a vegan lifestyle. Like many students, college represented the first time in my life where I experienced true independence. As I began to live by myself, I had to make food choices and overcome barriers such as lack of time, money and knowledge of nutrition. While leading a healthy vegan lifestyle can be affordable and easy, I struggled to find this balance and I knew I wasn’t alone.

Many students, vegan or not, experience the same barriers to eating healthfully that …

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Small‐quantity lipid‐based nutrient supplements (SQ‐LNS) have been studied in efficacy and effectiveness trials, but little is known about how parents perceive the products and their effects. In a randomised trial in Ghana, efficacy of SQ‐LNS provided to women during pregnancy and the first 6 months postpartum and to their children from 6 to 18 months of age was assessed by comparison with iron‐folic acid (IFA) capsules and multiple micronutrient (MMN) capsules provided to women. In a follow‐up study conducted when the index children from the original trial were between 4 and 6 years of age, we used survey‐based methods to …

Despite their diversity and ecological importance, many areas of the SAR—Stramenopila, Alveolata, and Rhizaria—clade are poorly understood as the majority (90%) of SAR species lack molecular data and only 5% of species are from well-sampled families. Here, we review and summarize the state of knowledge about the three major clades of SAR, describing the diversity within each clade and identifying synapomorphies when possible. We also assess the “dark area” of SAR: the morphologically described species that are missing molecular data. The majority of molecular data for SAR lineages are characterized from marine samples and vertebrate hosts, highlighting the need for …
