The Complexation Of Iron By Marine Humic Acid, Gerald L. Picard
The Complexation Of Iron By Marine Humic Acid, Gerald L. Picard
Open Access Master's Theses
Cation exchange capacity measurements, performed before and after removal of the humic acid fraction from various Narragansett Bay sediments, indicate that low concentrations of these organic substances strongly influence the ability of the sediment to react with metal ions. Atomic absorption and spectrophotometric methods have been developed which allow quantitative determinations of the extent of reactions between a naturally occurring humic acid and iron in artificial seawater. The results indicate that different humic acid-iron complexes are formed with varying solubilities depending on the humic acid-iron ratio used in the experiment. This study suggests that humic acid is a transport substance …
Thiol Amino Acids In Quality Control And Nutritive Value Of Fishery Products, Mohsin Ali
Thiol Amino Acids In Quality Control And Nutritive Value Of Fishery Products, Mohsin Ali
Open Access Dissertations
The quality of fish products is dependent upon the raw material and the process employed for their reproduction. The availability of the amino acids present in the protein component determine the value of the product as a food supplement. Amino acid availqbility can be determined by chemical, biochemical and biological methods. Most of the procedures are rather lengthy. A widely used chemical procedure, the available lysine method, is based on determining the quality of total lysine having free or reactable epsilon amino groups. This research has been directed toward the development of a procedure for determining the quantity of reactable …
Biological Inactivation Of Proteins By The Maillard Reaction, Jaime Amaya-Farfan
Biological Inactivation Of Proteins By The Maillard Reaction, Jaime Amaya-Farfan
Open Access Dissertations
The effects of the Maillard reaction on the biological activity of insulin as a hormone, and on the utilization of egg albumin as a source of amino acids have been studied.
In order to know the number, the position, and the effect of the glucose residues that bind a protein, crystalline zinc insulin was stored with 14C-glucose at 37° and 68% R.H. for four months. The unreacted sugar was separated from insulin in a Bio-Gel column and the bound radioactivity counted. The first sugar residue reacted within five days, and additional 2.7 residues reacted through the end of the …
Nutrients In Narragansett Bay Sediments, Mung-Shium Jack Sheih
Nutrients In Narragansett Bay Sediments, Mung-Shium Jack Sheih
Open Access Master's Theses
A knowledge of nutrient concentration levels in the sediments, using nutrient profile as an indicator of pollution, can be a revealing and important factor in defining the water quality of the Bay. The intent of this study was to examine the nutrient distribution of nitrogen and phosphoru3 in sediment cores of Narragansett Bay. The findings would serve to indicate the effect of man's activities on the r-ate of estuarine eutrophication and to interpret the pollution history of the Bay.
Results obtained-indicate that the sediments have a greater probability of concentrating pollutants and therefore, are better used to indicate some types …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Sulfhydryl Activity And The Toxicity Of A Series Of Vinyl Sulfone Molluscicidal Agents, Paul Thomas La Rocca
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Sulfhydryl Activity And The Toxicity Of A Series Of Vinyl Sulfone Molluscicidal Agents, Paul Thomas La Rocca
Open Access Master's Theses
A series of vinyl sulfone molluscicidal agents was tested to determine the ability to interfere with: a) the color-forming reaction between cysteine and 5,5’–dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB); b) the activity of malic dehydrogenase, a typical sulfhydryl-dependent enzyme; c) the in vitro endogenous respiration in the snail, Australorbis glabratus; and d) the in vivo and in vitro endogenous respiration and pyruvate metabolism of liver, brain, and kidney of albino rats. An approximate intraperitonea LD50 was determined for vinyl sulfone in male and female albino rats. The effect of vinyl sulfone on cysteine treated albino rats was also observed. Vinyl sulfone and …
Pharmacological Evaluation Of An Extract From Eisenia Bicyclis, David Michael Whitaker
Pharmacological Evaluation Of An Extract From Eisenia Bicyclis, David Michael Whitaker
Open Access Master's Theses
An extract from Eisenia bicyclis containing –principally a polyphenolic polymer was examined for pharmacological activity. The investigation centered around the established activity of a model polyphenolic compound, phloroglucinol. Studies on inflammation and alteration of hepatic microsomal enzyme activity were also performed. Heat denaturation of a 0.15% bovine serum albumin solution was inhibited 96% by the addition of the material at a final concentration of 0.32 mg/ml. Since stabilization of such solutions is often indicative 9f anti-inflammatory activity, direct measurements of this activity were made. The inhibition of formation of carrageenan-induced rat paw edema was utilized as a test system. As …

Potential Of Pompano Mariculture In Florida, James Anthony Elias
Potential Of Pompano Mariculture In Florida, James Anthony Elias
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Pompano mariculture is not an attempt to bridge the protein gap, but it has been initiated to provide a constant source of this highly desired marine fish. The current market for pompano is small, however, this has been attributed basically to its supply. It appears from the literature that T. carolinus has the most dominant market position since it has an excellent flavor and sports fishermen prefer it due to its fighting ability when hooked on light tackle. It appears from the published history of attempts to raise pompano, by Berry and Iversen, that one of the major problems in …
