The consequences of the inevitable acceptance of extended jurisdiction and its impact on the development and management of fisheries in Western Samoa are considered within the framework of the principles outlined at the United Nations Third Conference of the Law of the Sea - Revised Informal Composite Negotiating Text for the Eighth Session 1979. It is pointed out that with the passage of the 200-mile exclusive economic zone, Western Samoa not only has the opportunity to benefit from the harvesting of fish under its jurisdiction, but also must accept the responsibility of ensuring that the resource is rationally managed, and …

AlI 74 ppm (1 ppm = 1.77 E 14 moles CO₂) of anthropogenic CO₂ can be accounted for in atmosphere (45 ppm) and ocean (29 ppm) by a simple "diffusive / descending-water" model. 3.8 ppm remain in the mixed layer (at equilibrium), 19.1 have diffused into intermediate waters (at 1.3 cm² / sec). and 5.7 ppm have been advected by the North Atlantic Deep, and the Antarctic Intermediate and Bottom Waters. The diffusive uptake must be driven by a realistic "interrupted exponential" atmospheric driving function, with 23 years of no growth between the World Wars. The …

The Effects Of Cis-Chlordane And Dieldrin On The Short Food Chain: Artemia To Winter Flounder, Scott Mclean

Live Artemis sp. nauplii were contaminated with the pesticides cis-chlordane and dieldrin singly and in combination at two concentrations. The bioconcentration factors were 88.29 ± 13.09 and 128.03 ± 24.78, for cis-chlordane and dieldrin, respectively. Winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, post-larvae, fed the contaminated nauplii accumulated the pesticides. The resulting bioaccumulation factors were 0.67 ± 0.33 for cis-chlordane and 0.38 ± 0.16 dieldrin. Metabolism of cis-chlordane by the Artemia sp. is indicated by the presence of oxychlordane. However, metabolism of dieldrin in the Artemia sp. is not clearly implied. Cis-chlordane was only metabolized in the winter flounder …

Paralytic shellfish frequently fatal malady contaminated shellfish poisoning (PSP) is a serious, frequently fatal malady resulting from the ingestion of contaminated shellfish. Filter feeding bivalves, including clams and mussels, become toxic after ingesting toxic dinoflagellate algae of the genus Gonvaulax.

Due thousands to strict guidelines on shellfish bed closures, thousands of dollars depend on an analyst’s precision in measurement of the toxins on shellfish bed closures on an analyst's precision in measurement of the toxin. Gold sodium thiomalate (GST) effects on cultured rheumatoid synovial cells were used as a model to investigate a mechanism which can explain clinical benefits gained by patients from gold therapy. Synovial tissue obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis who were undergoing reconstructive joint surgery was used to obtain explant culture of synovial cells. The experiments described were performed on growing monolayer cultures during the second to fifth passages. Synovial cells were exposed to GST at pharmacologically relevant concentrations (10-100 uM). This study pertains to the problem of international activity in an area of political and ecological sensitivity, the Southern Ocean. Of specific concern is the question of which group of states should have a voice in management of Antarctic krill. The niche filled by krill within the ecosystem and its potential as a fishery is discussed. Past international practice has been affected for the most part by the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 which has maintained a somewhat exclusive "club" of nations as the overseers of Antarctic activity. However, states not party to the 1959 Treaty are becoming interested in the …
