Synthesis, Salvage, And Catabolism Of Uridine Nucleotides In Boron-Deficient Squash Roots, Carol J. Lovatt, Luke S. Albert, George C. Tremblay Jan 1981

Synthesis, Salvage, And Catabolism Of Uridine Nucleotides In Boron-Deficient Squash Roots, Carol J. Lovatt, Luke S. Albert, George C. Tremblay

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Previous work has provided evidence that plants may require boron to maintain adequate levels of pyrimidine nucleotides, suggesting that the state of boron deficiency may actually be one of pyrimidine starvation. Since the availability of pyrimidine nucleotides is influenced by their rates of synthesis, salvage, and catabolism, we compared these activities in the terminal 3 centimeters of roots excised from boron-deficient and -sufficient squash plants (Cucurbita pepo L.). Transferring 5-day-old squash plants to a boron-deficient nutrient solution resulted in cessation of root elongation within 18 hours. However, withholding boron for up to 30 hours did not result in either …

Polymorphonuclear Neutrophil Chemotaxis Induced And Inhibited By Bacteroides Spp., Stephen A. Adamu, Jay F. Sperry Jan 1981

Polymorphonuclear Neutrophil Chemotaxis Induced And Inhibited By Bacteroides Spp., Stephen A. Adamu, Jay F. Sperry

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

A possible virulence factor for Bacteroides subcutaneous abscesses has been found. The effect of Bacteroides culture filtrate and outer membrane on chemotaxis of rabbit peritoneal polymorphonuclear (PMN) neutrophils was assayed in Boyden chambers and via exocytosis of N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase. Both Bacteroides culture filtrate and outer membrane elicited some chemotaxis, as measured in the Boyden chamber; however, they had little effect upon exocytosis in cytochalasin B-treated PMN neutrophils. In the presence of serum complement, they completely abolished PMN neutrophil movement in the Boyden chamber assay, yet they gave a definite positive response for the exocytosis assay in the presence of serum …

A High School Curriculum In Marine Environmental Issues: "The Sea - Use And Abuse" Part I, Martha J. Zimmerman Jan 1981

A High School Curriculum In Marine Environmental Issues: "The Sea - Use And Abuse" Part I, Martha J. Zimmerman

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

To the Teacher: The materials presented and developed in this learning activity packet involve dynamic, complex, and persistent environmental issues concerning man's interaction with the oceans and the marine environment. As we progress into the 1980's, many decisions effecting the marine world will be made within the political sphere. These decisions will have wide-spreading impacts into the economic and social areas as well. Some consequences will be observed immediately, and others perhaps more serious, defiant of detection, and in some instances even hazardous, may have delayed results. The complex interrelationships of land and oceanic environments, the fragility of the marine …

Determination Of Animal Fat In Margarine By High Pressure Liquid Chromatography Of The Sterols, Ali Alaidaros Jan 1981

Determination Of Animal Fat In Margarine By High Pressure Liquid Chromatography Of The Sterols, Ali Alaidaros

Open Access Master's Theses

The utility of high pressure liquid chromatography as a routine method to detect animal fats in vegetable margarines on the basis of sterol content was investigated. Cholesterol, which makes up almost 100% of the total sterol in animal fats, constitutes only 0-4% of the total sterols in vegetable oils.

The major phytosterols in vegetable oils currently used for margarine production are B-sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol. Brassicasterol is less conunon but in rapeseed oil it is present in high proportion. The minor phytosterols are: ~ 5 -avenasterol, ~ 7 -stiqmasterol, 7 ~ -avenasterol, 24-methyl cholest-7-enol and cholesterol.

Identification And Differentiation Of Species In Cooked Meat By Vertical Plate Gel Electrophoresis, Hamad Al-Awfy Jan 1981

Identification And Differentiation Of Species In Cooked Meat By Vertical Plate Gel Electrophoresis, Hamad Al-Awfy

Open Access Master's Theses

Since quality control for adulteration in meat is very important, the vertical plate polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic technique was studied for the detection and identification of cook ed and canned species extracts.

Meat samples from beef, pork, lamb and horse were heated for one hour from 65-75°C at intervals of about 5°C. Be' cause most of the research on the effect of cooking meats on the denatured serum proteins and the resultant electrophoretic patterns were done on beef, beef cooked at 70°C was selected as an initial trial for protein solubilization in order to choose an extraction and applying procedure for …

Potato Waste As A Substrate For Single Cell Protein And Enzyme Production, Adilades A. Arenas Santiago Jan 1981

Potato Waste As A Substrate For Single Cell Protein And Enzyme Production, Adilades A. Arenas Santiago

Open Access Master's Theses

The feasibility of using potato wastes as substrate for or single cell protein (SCP) and extracellular enzyme production by Pleurotus ostreatus was· studied in submerged culture.

Cell mass yield and enzyme production of P. ostreatus we re studied as a function of (1) substrate concentration, (2) source of nitrogen, (3) temperature, (4) pH and (5) the addition of sodium bisulfite on the medium. The fermentation process was carried out to batch cultures in 250 ml flasks . Protein content on a dry cell mass basis, alphaamylase activity and reducing sugar content in the broth were determined in all the growth …

Human Pharmacokinetics Of 5-Formyl Tetrahydrofolate, Bruce Kenneth Birmingham Jan 1981

Human Pharmacokinetics Of 5-Formyl Tetrahydrofolate, Bruce Kenneth Birmingham

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of calcium leucovorin in normal subjects and in patients undergoing High-Dose methotrexame therapy for the treatment of neoplastic disease. By characterizing the disposition of leucovorin it was hoped that the efficacy of the aethotrexate therapy might be improved, while at the same time, the incidence of toxicity could be diminished.

An assay for the separation and quantification of leucovorin in serum was developed. The reduced folate vas extracted from serum using reverse-phase chromatographic minicolumns and a paired-ion reagent. Leucovorin was eluted from this system in methanol and evaporated to dryness …

Dwarf Plants Produced Directly From Seeds Treated With Growth Retardants And Indirectly From Seeds Produced By Plants Treated With Growth Retardants, Janice L. Anthony Jan 1981

Dwarf Plants Produced Directly From Seeds Treated With Growth Retardants And Indirectly From Seeds Produced By Plants Treated With Growth Retardants, Janice L. Anthony

Open Access Master's Theses

Many annual bedding plants are overly tall with sparse, pale foliage. Plant growth retardant chemicals commonly correct these undesirable characteristics. A method of producing dwarf plants by seed treatment with growth retardants could be useful to seed producers, commercial growers and home gardeners.

To determine the feasibility of producing dwarf plants by treating seeds with retardants, seeds were treated directly with aqueous, acetone or talc formulations of retardants, and indirectly by treatment of plants producing seed. The retardants SADH (N,N-dimethylamino succinamic acid), CCC ([2-chloroethyl] trimethylammonium chloride), Amo-1618, (4-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-2-methylphenyl trimethylammonium chloride, 1-piperidine carboxylate), and Ancymidol (a-cyclopropyl-a-(p-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidine methanol) were used to treat …

An Investigation Into A New England Fisheries Development Project: Towards The Expansion Of The Whiting Fishery, J. H. Kaelin

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In 1973, the New England Fishery Development Program (NEFDP), an industry/government partnership was formed to offset a portion of the economic decline of the New England fishing industry while encouraging the development of underutilized species and nontraditional fishery products. The purpose of this paper is to examine one of the NEFDP's development projects and to comment on its apparent success. This paper attempts to determine if domestic processors can be expected to produce whiting fillet blocks that can compete in the market place with foreign imports. Several aspects of the problem are favorably resolved-an abundant whiting resource is available; the …
