A Method For The Immobilization Of Xanthine Oxidase In Ca-Alginate Membranes To Measure Hypoxanthine Concentration In Order To Assess Flesh Food Quality, Hamad A. Al-Awfy
Open Access Dissertations
The consumer's acceptance of food quality is an important factor, especially in Third World Countries which import much of their food. Since flesh food (meat, fish) is shipped to those countries frozen or in cold storage, it is susceptible to temperature fluctuations during shipment, resulting in deterioration of the meat and unacceptable quality. Therefore an acceptable procedure to assess flesh food quality is necessary to protect the consumer and trader and to aid in the manufacture of high quality food products.
Hypoxanthine concentration in flesh food has been a useful index for the assessment of freshness. Therefore, it was selected …

Role Of Vascular Reactivity And Collagen Biosynthesis In The Depressor Effect Of Streptozotocin In The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, Paul H. Breault
Open Access Master's Theses
Diabetes decreases systolic arterial pressure in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Two possible mechanisms, a decrease in vascular collagen biosynthesis and an altered vascular reactivity, were investigated. Collagen biosynthesis, as indicated by prolyl hydroxylase activity, was reduced in the aorta in the diabetic SHR to a greater extent than the diabetic Wistar-Kyoto rat (WKY). Prolyl hydroxylase activity was also reduced, but to a lesser extent, in the aorta of food restricted and hypothyroid SHR and WKY rats. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes increased the sensitivity of the mesenteric artery of both strains to methoxamine only. The response of the mesenteric artery of …
Biological And Environmental Influences On The Cognitive Development Of Children With Developmental Disabilities, Ruth H. Schennum
Biological And Environmental Influences On The Cognitive Development Of Children With Developmental Disabilities, Ruth H. Schennum
Open Access Dissertations
The biological and environmental influences on sensorimotor/cognitive development were studied. Participants were 100 children with developmental disabilities between the ages of 2 and 28 months and their families. Scores from the Rochester Research Obstetric Scale (ROS), Pediatric Complications Scale (PdCS), and Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment (HOME) were used as independent variables in a multiple regression analysis. The dependent variable was the Mental Development Index (MDI) from the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Results indicate there is a significant, but moderate relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Very little overlap was found among the independent variables. …

Determination Of Retinol By Aqueous Reverse Phase Open Column System, Abdulaly B. Al-Abdulaly
Determination Of Retinol By Aqueous Reverse Phase Open Column System, Abdulaly B. Al-Abdulaly
Open Access Dissertations
The AOAC method and other open column techniques which are used to determine retinol content, are time consuming, require technical skills, and do not always result in a complete separation of retinol from other fluorescent components. In some cases cis-trans isomers are formed due to the long term exposure of retinol to oxygen, light, adsorbents and solvents. The colorimetric method hes disadvantages which include a rapidly fading blue color, sensitivity of the reagent to moisture, and interference from carotenoids. The more recently developed HPLC method is rapid, reproducible, nondestructive, quantitative and gives high resolution of closely related compounds. The instrumentation, …

Studies On The Metabolism Of Astaxanthin In The Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri), Abdulrhaman Salih Al-Khalifah
Open Access Dissertations
Racemic astaxanthin was fed to rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) for 2, 4, and 6 weeks. The fish showed a bright pink coloration of the skin and flesh; the highest amount of astaxanthin (162 ug/100g) was found in the skin of fish fed the test diet for six weeks. Lutein, 3-epilutein, and zeaxanthin were also detected in the flesh and skin; it was concluded that astaxanthin was converted to zeaxanthin in the skin. The mean vitamin A content of the liver was determined; the ratio of vitamin A1: vitamin A2 was approximately 1:3. There was no …

Anatomical And Morphological Response Of Highbush Blueberry To Flooding Stress, John David Abbott
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to study the various aspects of root, shoot and reproductive growth of the cultivated highbush blueberry under normal conditions and as influenced by seasonal root zone flooding.
These studies were conducted on three cultivars – “Earliblue”, “Bluecrop”, and “Lateblue” for up to three years. Root, shoot, and reproductive growth were measured at intervals throughout the years and the soil temperature and stage of plant development recorded.
Growth of white unsuberized roots peaked in early-June and September when soil temperatures were in the range of 14 to 18 °C and was concomitant with shoot growth. …

Somalia Fisheries Development: Past, Present And Future, Bruce Barbour
Somalia Fisheries Development: Past, Present And Future, Bruce Barbour
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper is being presented in three distinct parts. Each section deals with fisheries development in Somalia, East Africa, past, present and future. The first section focuses on a project proposal by a World Bank/U.N. FAO joint effort. This proposal exemplifies a traditional approach to development. This traditional approach will be defined and then evaluated. The second section is a report of the authors consultancy to the Somali government concerning the development of the fisheries within the Coastal Development Projects jurisdiction. The approach employed was one of first defining the problem and then working on solutions. This section is being …

Phototrophic And Apochlorotic Components Of Picoplankton And Nanoplankton In The North Atlantic: Geographic, Vertical, Seasonal And Diel Distributions, Paul G. Davis, David A. Caron, Paul W. Johnson, John Mcn. Sieburth
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
Chloroplast-containing and apochlorotic cells of nanoplankton (2 to 20 μm), and chroococcoid cyanobacteria and total bacteria in the picoplankton (0.2 to 2.0 μm) were enumerated by epifluorescence microscopy from 39 estuarine and oceanic stations to assess numerical relations of apochlorotic nanoplankton with other components of the microbial plankton. Apparent relations between different plankton types were found over geographic separation as well as seasonal and diel-cycles. Population densities of apochlorotic, heterotrophic nanoplankton (Hnan) and chloroplast-containing, phototrophic nanoplankton (Pnano) were similar, ranging from 104 cells ml-1 in estuarine environments to 102 cells ml-1 at oceanic stations. All microbial …

Biology Of The Antarctic Krill (Euphausia Superba) And Fisheries Management Under The Convention On The Conservation Of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, Randa Ali Mansour
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Interest in the development of a commercial fishery for Antarctic krill, the lack of a legal regime to govern and promote rational exploitation of Antarctic living resources, and a desire to avoid future conflicts between claimants and non-claimants regarding the control of an Antarctic marine fishery, as well as the desire to set a precedent for management and exploitation of non-living resources were incentives for the negotiation of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). Furthermore, the Antarctic Treaty Consultative parties wished to maintain and solidify their control and enhance their collective legitimacy in the Antarctic …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Holocaust Survivor Parents On Their Children, Cynthia Budick
An Investigation Of The Effect Of Holocaust Survivor Parents On Their Children, Cynthia Budick
Open Access Dissertations
Studies of the Holocaust have shown that the Concentration Camp victims were traumatized in so massive a fashion as to make a permanent and irreversible change in their character.
The purpose of the present research was to make a direct inquiry into whether the character traits and symptoms of the survivors had an effect on character structure and personality of their children. Further, it was an attempt to distinguish two groups of survivors' children: children of survivors who were adolescents in the Concentration Camps and children of survivors who were adults in the Concentration Camps.
The subjects in this study …
