The present study was undertaken to identify lettuce gel' plasm having resistance to M. hapla. Approximately 500 Lactuca accessions were evaluated in the greenhouse for resistance to M. hapla. Six week old seedlings were inoculated with M. hapla at 5,000 eggs per plant. Twelve weeks after inoculation data were recorded on root galling and fresh root weight. The accessions with a root galling score of two or less were considered resistant to M. hapla and were screened in a second trial. Two L. sativa accessions (PI 508476 and PI 419140) and three wild Lactuca accessions, L. saligna PI 281876, L. …

This study analyzes William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1596) and his Globe Theater as well as John Gielgud's (1935), Peter Brook's (1947), and Tae-Suk Oh's (2005 and 2006) adaptation of it to explore how the play is retold, reinterpreted, and brought alive for new audiences through different cultures and through the theater of today. As the acclaimed western directors, the Korean director Tae-Suk Oh accurately interprets Shakespearean devices in the source text and employs methodologies drawn from his own culture as well as Elizabethan culture. He effectively relates the world of the play to the world of the audience through …
Persistence, Resistance, And Change: Toward A Critical Praxis For Student Researched Writing, Bryna L. Siegel
Persistence, Resistance, And Change: Toward A Critical Praxis For Student Researched Writing, Bryna L. Siegel
Open Access Dissertations
This project re-situates and re-defines researched writing, examines the persistence of the current-traditional model in college curriculums, investigates why resistance to the current-traditional model has often failed, and offers a solution which realigns researched writing with current rhetoric and composition research, theory, and pedagogical paradigms. The dissertation investigates the following research questions: What is the traditional research paper? How does it manifest in classrooms? How do teachers think and talk about this persistent genre? I critique the theoretical, ideological, and historical assumptions that exist in terms of the purposes of researched writing, and claim that a more critical aim for …

International Dual Degrees At The Graduate Levels: The University Of Rhode Island And The Technische Universität Braunschweig, John M. Grandin
Online Journal for Global Engineering Education
While it has now become common for American colleges and universities to develop programs abroad for engineering undergrads in the form of student exchange, internship, special project, short-term study tours, and so forth, there has been little discussion of international exchange or special degree arrangements at the graduate level. Convinced that this must happen if we are to educate American researchers and technologists to have the skills necessary for careers in the global workplace, the University of Rhode Island has forged new dual degree programs at the masters and doctoral levels with its partner university in Germany, the Technische Universität …

The placental–decidual interaction through invading trophoblasts determines whether a physiological transformation of the uterine spiral arteries is established or not. Trophoblast-orchestrated artery remodeling is central to normal placentation. Dysregulated uteroplacental interaction and vascular remodeling are thought to be associated with the molecular events underlying the pathology of late pregnancy anomalies including preeclampsia. Although the exact gestational age at which trophoblast invasion ceases is not known, it remains unclear whether late pregnancy trophoblasts retain the ability to transform the uterine arteries. Here, we have developed a dual cell, in vitro culture system that mimics the vascular remodeling events during …
Intercultural Sensitivity And Conflict Management Styles In Cross-Cultural Organizational Situations, Tong Yu, Guo-Ming Chen
Intercultural Sensitivity And Conflict Management Styles In Cross-Cultural Organizational Situations, Tong Yu, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Increased cultural diversity in work places has aroused considerable attention to conflict management and intercultural sensitivity. However, few studies have investigated these two concepts together. The present study aims to bridge the gap in this line of research with an examination between intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles in a hypothetical cross-cultural organizational situation. The results from 253 participants indicate that significantly positive and negative relationships exist among the dimensions of the two concepts. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed as well.
Queen Elizabeth I And Shakespeare: Image Of Gender, Power, And Sexuality, Frederick Schweizer
Queen Elizabeth I And Shakespeare: Image Of Gender, Power, And Sexuality, Frederick Schweizer
Open Access Dissertations
Queen Elizabeth I's writing is contextually significant; it represents not only Elizabeth's thoughts, wishes and commands, but also Elizabeth herself. During a reign in which she struggles with issues of sexuality and power as a female ruler, her manipulation of language to create an identity and assert power becomes the way in which Elizabeth constructs and re-defines herself. She challenges Renaissance gender expectations through the power of language and expands definitions and/or identities of women in terms of sexuality, marriage, religion, and politics. She adapts male discourse as her own and manipulates language to fit specific audiences, but she must …

Speaking Out: Class, Race, And Gender In The Writings Of Ruth Mcenery Stuart, Edith Summers Kelley, And Harriette Simpson Arnow, Claire E. Reynolds
Open Access Dissertations
This study analyzes representations in American fiction of social issues during periods of national turmoil. Ruth McEnery Stuart, Edith Summers Kelley, and Harriette Simpson Arnow draw characters marginalized by class, gender, race, and ethnicity who negotiate survival amid crisis and adverse socioeconomic conditions. Giving voice to people who could not speak for themselves, the texts perform the work of cultural resistance to a discourse that privileges capitalism, patriarchy, and white supremacy while oppressing the poor, women, and non-whites. Following an introductory chapter, I present the authors and their works chronologically, beginning each chapter with a brief overview of the historical …

Previous research on conversational sensitivity and listening styles has shown inconsistent results on the relationship between the two concepts. This study is designed to continue the line of research by further examining the relationship of the two concepts and between the dimensions. Two hundred and seventy students in the basic courses of Communication and Psychology participate in this study. The results indicate that significantly positive and negative relationships exist among the dimensions of the two concepts. Gender differences on the two concepts are also tested. Limitations and directions for future research are as well discussed.
Public Writing Inside And Outside The Classroom: A Comparative Analysis Of Activist Rhetorics, Eileen Medeiros
Public Writing Inside And Outside The Classroom: A Comparative Analysis Of Activist Rhetorics, Eileen Medeiros
Open Access Dissertations
Public writing, or writing in the public sphere, is being heralded as the next step in composition studies. Embedded in public writing is the assumption that it fosters civic engagement and effects social change, the same assumptions that were made about service-learning in the 1990's--assumptions that have turned out to be incorrect, actually. This study is an investigation of those assumptions. Using a comparative methodology, this study examines the types of writing that students are producing in five different public writing classes located around the country and juxtaposes that writing with the writing produced by members of five national activist …

The Epistemic Consumption Object And Postsocial Consumption: Expanding Consumer‐Object Theory In Consumer Research, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia
College of Business Faculty Publications
We introduce the concept of the epistemic consumption object. Such consumption objects are characterized by two interrelated features. First, epistemic consumption objects reveal themselves progressively through interaction, observation, use, examination, and evaluation. Such layered revelation is accompanied by an increasing rather than a decline of the object’s complexity. Second, such objects demonstrate a propensity to change their “face‐in‐action” vis‐à‐vis consumers through the continuous addition or subtraction of properties. The epistemic consumption object is materially elusive and this lack of ontological stability turns the object into a continuous knowledge project for consumers. Via this ongoing cycle of revelation and discovery, consumers …

Mirror Of Culture: The Study Of A Nineteenth-Century Sewing Diary, Elizabeth M. Dellabadia
Senior Honors Projects
Hidden inside the library of the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts is wonderful resource for the study of late nineteenth-century America. When Ann Eliza Cunningham was middle aged, she compiled a sewing diary that included scraps of material from dresses she wore or China trade fabrics brought home by her father. Ann Eliza not only included assorted swatches; but she associated the fabrics with different events in her life. She includes swatches from dresses she wore on her wedding day in 1856, for Thanksgiving, and for various family celebrations like birthday parties. Similar to the work of a …
Bringing The Market To Life: Screen Aesthetics And The Epistemic Consumption Object, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia
Bringing The Market To Life: Screen Aesthetics And The Epistemic Consumption Object, Detlev Zwick, Nikhilesh Dholakia
College of Business Faculty Publications
This article argues that the new ‘visuality’ (Schroeder, 2002) of the Internet transforms the stock market into an epistemic consumption object. The aesthetics of the screen turn the market into an interactive and response-present surface representation. On the computer screen, the market becomes an object of constant movement and variation, changing direction and altering appearance at any time. Following Knorr Cetina (1997, 2002b) we argue that the visual logic of the screen ‘opens up’ the market ontologically. The ontological liquidity of the market-on-screen simulates the indefiniteness of other life forms. We suggest that the continuing fascination with online investing is …

The Postcolonial Body In Queer Space And Time, Rebecca Fine Romanow
The Postcolonial Body In Queer Space And Time, Rebecca Fine Romanow
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines the ways in which the notion of the postcolonial correlates to Judith Halberstam's idea of queer space and time where, in "[detaching] queerness from sexuality" (1), chronologies represent a "diminishing future [which] creates a new emphasis on the here, the present, the now" (Halberstam2). Emphasizing authors from Africa, the Levant, and Southeast Asia in the diaspora in London from the mid-1960s through 1990, the reading of both postcolonial lands and subjects as "queer counterproductive" space reveals a depiction of bodies in these texts as located in and performing "queer space and time." I argue that the first …

Space-People-Language: A Grounded Theory Of A Place-Based Pedagogy In A First Year Writing Class, William Burns
Open Access Dissertations
This qualitative study uses grounded theory and teacher research to describe and analyze a place-based composition assignment experienced by a first year writing class at the University of Rhode Island in Fall 2004. Results suggest that participants used interconnecting spatial, social, and discursive techniques to construct familiarity and comfort in campus and writing environments, making explicit the relationships between spatial awareness, rhetorical strategies, and composing practices. These relationships have been previously theorized upon but have not resulted in in-depth qualitative accounts of pedagogical experiences. This study of spatial, rhetorical, and pedagogical theories and methods explores these relationships using the critical …

The fetal basis of adult disease (FeBAD) hypothesis states that many adult diseases have a fetal origin. According to FeBAD, injury or environmental influences occurring at critical periods of organ development could result in “programmatic” changes via alterations in gene expression or gene imprinting that may result in functional deficits that become apparent later in life. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by excessive deposits of aggregated β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides, which are snippets of the β-amyloid precursor protein (APP). The predominately sporadic nature of AD suggests that the environment must play a role in neurodegeneration. …

Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Help In A Multi-Ethnic Sample: The Roles Of Beliefs About Mental Illness Etiology, Religious Orientation, And Acculturation, Pascal Jean-Pierre
Open Access Dissertations
The present research examined the roles of various cultural and demographic characteristics (i.e., beliefs about mental illness etiology, religious orientation and acculturation) in individuals' attitudes toward seeking professional help. Data collected from a multiethnic sample of 255 English fluent adult participants [Haitians (n = 55), Cape Verdeans (n = 30), Dominicans (n = 41), Puerto Ricans (n = 39), Irish (n = 44), and Italians (n = 46)] were included in this secondary analysis. Participants voluntarily completed questionnaire packets for a previous study by the present author. Previously analyzed variables (e.g., beliefs about mental illness etiology and acculturation) and new …

Protein kinases are enzymes that covalently modify proteins by attaching phosphate groups (from ATP) to serine, threonine, and/or tyrosine residues. In so doing, the functional properties of the protein kinase’s substrates are modified. Protein kinases transduce signals from the cell membrane into the interior of the cell. Such signals include not only those arising from ligand–receptor interactions but also environmental perturbations such as when the membrane undergoes mechanical deformation (ie, cell stretch or shear stress). Ultimately, the activation of signaling pathways that use protein kinases often culminates in the reprogramming of gene expression through the direct regulation of transcription factors …

Freedom's Children: Fifth Graders' Perceptions Of The Effects Of Peace Education In The Form Of Kingian Nonviolence, Sylvia Carolle Spears
Open Access Dissertations
This ethnographic study examines students' perceptions of the effects of peace education in the form of Kingian Nonviolence. Nine fifth grade students and seven parents were interviewed using life-story methods to elicit participants' perceptions regarding how the students' study of nonviolence affected their beliefs and behaviors. Data were coded and then analyzed utilizing constant comparison methods. Analysis of interview transcripts resulted in two categories of data--the fifth grade experience and social and personal change. Analysis of interview transcripts revealed that the fifth grade experience had three distinct phases--a phase of initial anxiety and concern, a middle phase during which the …

Prolegomenon To The Literary Study Of Hypertext, Edward Steven Shear
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is intended as contribution to the development of a framework and methodology for the literary study of hypertext. Its first purpose is to analyze the term "hypertext" and related keywords in respect to their widely varying usages in multiple disciplines to provide required clarification to identify the object of study in literary hypertext studies. The second purpose of the study is to propose a framework by which pre-computer literary works may be examined in relationship to the contemporary form of hypertext. These two goals work hand-in-hand to provide a groundwork of a literary history of hypertext. The first …

Mobile Technologies And Boundaryless Spaces: Slavish Lifestyles, Seductive Meanderings, Or Creative Empowerment?, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Detlev Zwick

According to the instrumental theory of technology, mobile technologies - what McLuhan's refers to as electronic prostheses - promise opportunities for greater freedom, creativity, leisure, and productivity by enhancing organic bodily functions. Correspondingly, as (Cavallaro, 2000) would argue, objects such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), portable physiotherapy units, laptops, and portable stereos - to name just a few - seem to impart a sense of solidity to consumers' lives. Just like prostheses, they are inserted into our everyday lives, helping our "inadequate" bodies along in fulfilling practical tasks. Phenomenologically, these kinds of mobile technologies supposedly support the subject's …

Development Of A Numerical Model For Shallow Marine Ecosystems With Application To Greenwich Bay, Rhode Island, Mark James Brush
Open Access Dissertations
Numerical models have become increasingly important tools for the study of marine ecosystems. While these models serve as valuable research and heuristic tools, they are not yet to the point of producing reliable predictions upon which to base management decisions. Further, most existing models of coastal systems have been constructed for relatively deep estuaries rather than shallow, nearshore systems which receive the bulk of anthropogenic nutrient loading and experience the most extreme degradation in water quality. A numerical model was developed for shallow marine ecosystems which contain both pelagic and benthic compartments of the food web. A series of innovations …
