“Because She Would Not Be Governed”: Medieval Women, Power, And The Politicization Of Witchcraft, Anna Nelson Bennett
“Because She Would Not Be Governed”: Medieval Women, Power, And The Politicization Of Witchcraft, Anna Nelson Bennett
Open Access Master's Theses
Statement of the Problem:
Since the mid-‐twentieth century, scholarship on European witchcraft has proved critical in understanding the relationship between gender, sexuality, and power in pre-‐modern Western society. For medieval and early modern people, accusations of heresy and witchcraft served to reinstate control over elements of society that were perceived as dangerous or dissident to the established order. While advances in the study of witchcraft have greatly informed the fields of history and anthropology, such scholarship has up until this point largely focused on witch hunts targeting women of the lower classes. Further study concerning the use of witchcraft charges …
Interventions During Labor And Birth In The United States: A Qualitative Analysis Of Women’S Experiences, Alana M. Bibeau
Interventions During Labor And Birth In The United States: A Qualitative Analysis Of Women’S Experiences, Alana M. Bibeau
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Objective: To explore and describe hospital-‐birthing women’s understandings of and experiences with interventions during labor and birth. Methods: Qualitative data was collected as part of a larger ethnographic study of childbirth in the United States. The grounded theory method was employed to analyze interviews with 59 women from three states who had recently given birth in hospitals with physicians or certified nurse-‐midwives in attendance.
Results: Four themes emerged from the data. The themes safety/risk and provider match, described women’s expectations regarding intervention and their interactions with providers. A third theme addressed how women experienced interventions and their perceptions of control …

What They Don’T Want You To Know About Planet X: Surviving 2012 And The Aesthetics Of Conspiracy Rhetoric, Ian Reyes, Jason K. Smith
What They Don’T Want You To Know About Planet X: Surviving 2012 And The Aesthetics Of Conspiracy Rhetoric, Ian Reyes, Jason K. Smith
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Predictions of catastrophe at the end of the year 2012 are popular enough to be exploited by Hollywood and debunked by NASA. Drawing from a YouTube video series predicting a 2012 cataclysm caused by “Planet X,” we ask whether the discourse in question is a conspiracy theory and demonstrate how it exemplifies the challenges of analyzing rhetoric in the “paranoid style.” Examining these videos in terms of evidence, credibility, and inter-textuality, this article articulates an aesthetic of conspiracism, going beyond identifying the components of paranoid style to answer what makes a good conspiracy theory as such.

Out Of Place: Racial Stereotypes And The Ecology Of Frisks And Searches Following Traffic Stops, Leo Carroll, M. Liliana Gonzalez
Out Of Place: Racial Stereotypes And The Ecology Of Frisks And Searches Following Traffic Stops, Leo Carroll, M. Liliana Gonzalez
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Objectives: Test hypotheses drawn from Smith and Alpert's social conditioning theory that explains biased policing as the result of implicit racial stereotypes. Distinguishing between frisks, external pat-downs, and probable cause searches, we hypothesize that (1) black drivers are more likely than white drivers to be frisked and searched; (2) racial disparity is greater in frisks than searches; (3) racial disparity in frisks, but not searches, is conditional upon the racial composition of the community; and (4) that drivers' race is not related to the productivity of searches. Methods: Data are all traffic stops made by the Rhode Island …
Marketing Archaeology, William H. Krieger
Marketing Archaeology, William H. Krieger
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In the 19th century, ‘scientific archaeologists’ split from their antiquarian colleagues over the role that provenience (context) plays in the value of an artifact. These archaeologists focus on documenting an artifact’s context when they remove it from its original location. Archaeologists then use this contextual information to place these artifacts within a particular larger assemblage, in a particular time and space. Once analyzed, the artifacts found in a site or region can be used to document, to understand, and explain the past. Given the central place of context for archaeological excavation, archaeologists have done everything in their power to combat …

Disciplinary Evolution And The Rise Of The Transdiscipline, Eli B. Cohen, Scott J. Lloyd
Disciplinary Evolution And The Rise Of The Transdiscipline, Eli B. Cohen, Scott J. Lloyd
College of Business Faculty Publications
This paper challenges readers to reflect on academic disciplines in a new way, through the lens of the theory of evolution. Indeed, how disciplines came into being has been largely left unexplored. This paper shows how the concepts of evolution can be productively applied to describe the development, creation, and diminishment of disciplines. These concepts include natural selection, speciation, parallel evolution, extinction, and heterosis, among others. The paper concludes that these forces lead to a prediction that a new form of organization, the transdiscipline, is evolving to become perhaps predominant.

Humans and other primates are distinct among placental mammals in having exceptionally slow rates of growth, reproduction, and aging. Primates’ slow life history schedules are generally thought to reflect an evolved strategy of allocating energy away from growth and reproduction and toward somatic investment, particularly to the development and maintenance of large brains. Here we examine an alternative explanation: that primates’ slow life histories reflect low total energy expenditure (TEE) (kilocalories per day) relative to other placental mammals. We compared doubly labeled water measurements of TEE among 17 primate species with similar measures for other placental mammals. We found that …
