Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Objective: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a risk factor for survival in middle-aged individuals, but conflicting evidence exists on the relationship between LDL-C and all-cause mortality among the elderly. The goal of this study was to assess the relationship between LDL-C and all-cause mortality among Chinese oldest old (aged 80 and older) in a prospective cohort study.

Methods: LDL-C concentration was measured at baseline and all-cause mortality was calculated over a 3-year period. Multiple statistical models were used to adjust for demographic and biological covariates.

Results: During three years of follow-up, 447 of 935 participants died, and the overall all-cause …

The Evolution Of Difficult Childbirth And Helpless Hominin Infants, Holly M. Dunsworth, Leah Eccleston Jan 2015

The Evolution Of Difficult Childbirth And Helpless Hominin Infants, Holly M. Dunsworth, Leah Eccleston

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Because of the implications for behavioral, social, and cultural evolution, reconstructions of the evolutionary history of human parturition are driven by two main questions: First, when did childbirth become difficult? And second, does difficult childbirth have something to do with infant helplessness? Here we review the available evidence and consider answers to these questions. Although the definitive time frame remains unclear, childbirth may not have reached our present state of difficulty until fairly recently (

Islands Of Difference: Design, Urbanism, And Sustainable Tourism In The Anthropocene Caribbean, Amelia Moore Jan 2015

Islands Of Difference: Design, Urbanism, And Sustainable Tourism In The Anthropocene Caribbean, Amelia Moore

Marine Affairs Faculty Publications

This paper introduces the Anthropocene idea as a problem space with salience for Caribbean anthropology and the Caribbean travel industry. The term is used by scientists to define the present era in which human processes operate at the scale of the Earth’s geologic and biological systems, and it has come to justify a host of current actions in the name of sustainability. Through the examination of a new second-home destination currently being built in The Bahamas, I point out shifting trends in tourism design moving away from the anchor resort model of enclave mass tourism. I make the case that …

Tsunami Recurrence In The Eastern Alaska-Aleutian Arc: A Holocene Stratigraphic Record From Chirikof Island, Alaska, Alan R. Nelson, Richard W. Briggs, Tina Dura, Simon E. Engelhart, Guy Gelfenbaum, Lee-Ann Bradley, Steve L. Forman, Christopher H. Vane, Katherine A. Kelley Jan 2015

Tsunami Recurrence In The Eastern Alaska-Aleutian Arc: A Holocene Stratigraphic Record From Chirikof Island, Alaska, Alan R. Nelson, Richard W. Briggs, Tina Dura, Simon E. Engelhart, Guy Gelfenbaum, Lee-Ann Bradley, Steve L. Forman, Christopher H. Vane, Katherine A. Kelley

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Despite the role of the Alaska-Aleutian megathrust as the source of some of the largest earthquakes and tsunamis, the history of its pre–twentieth century tsunamis is largely unknown west of the rupture zone of the great (magnitude, M 9.2) 1964 earthquake. Stratigraphy in core transects at two boggy lowland sites on Chirikof Island’s southwest coast preserves tsunami deposits dating from the postglacial to the twentieth century. In a 500-m-long basin 13–15 m above sea level and 400 m from the sea, 4 of 10 sandy to silty beds in a 3–5-m-thick sequence of freshwater peat were probably deposited by tsunamis. …

Considering Educational Perspectives And Their Relevance To Allied Health Professional Education: Using Physical Therapy As An Example, Jennifer G. Audette, Susan Roush

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to introduce readers to three educational perspectives and explain their relevance to allied health professional education. Faculty in allied health professional education are often solely educated as clinicians and not as teachers, entering academia with limited background in educational theory. Professional organizations and accrediting bodies are highlighting the need for evidence and theory-based pedagogy and practice in educational settings. Method: An overview of three educational perspectives and to discuss their relevance to allied health professional education, using physical therapist education as an example. Conclusion: The three perspectives presented; progressive, critical and professional, are …

Theorizing Global Community As Cultural Home In The New Century, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2015

Theorizing Global Community As Cultural Home In The New Century, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The emergence of global society does not necessarily mean that a new sense of community will follow. A new sense of community must be cultivated in order to transform human society into a cohesive global community in the new century. This theoretical paper further argues that this global community can be and should be treated as the new cultural home of human beings. The author first conceptualizes the concept of “home” and then employs four key concepts, including the contextuality of intercultural communication, boundary game, boundary wisdom, and global ethics, to theorize the global community as the new cultural …

Bringing The World Inside: British Modernism And Taste – Gustatory, Social, And Aesthetic, Michael David Becker Jan 2015

Bringing The World Inside: British Modernism And Taste – Gustatory, Social, And Aesthetic, Michael David Becker

Open Access Dissertations

As nineteenth-century scientific and industrial developments in food processing were increasingly applied on larger scales, and to a greater diversity of food items, modernity made its mark on the early twentieth-century consumer’s daily foods. In addition to industrial and scientific developments, World War I and World War II brought significant changes to food production, distribution, and consumption as populations suddenly worried about the availability, allocation, and quality of food items. Early twentieth-century novels demonstrate a preoccupation with the newly modernized and altered foods and explore how food behaviors and tastes change during the period.

This project examines literary representations of …

Life Vs. Unlife: Interspecies Solidarity And Companionism In Contemporary American Literature, Barnaby Mclaughlin Jan 2015

Life Vs. Unlife: Interspecies Solidarity And Companionism In Contemporary American Literature, Barnaby Mclaughlin

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explores the representations of interspecies relationships in contemporary American literature. In recent years, interdisciplinary attention, variously referred to under the umbrella categories of Posthumanism," "Human-Animal Studies," "Animality Studies," and "Critical Animal Studies," have called into question the anthropocentric traditions across multiple disciplines. However, much of this recent attention still focuses on animals in the abstract, which is to say that they rarely concern themselves with actual animals or our relationships to them. Even when a real animal manages to penetrate a text, such as Jacques Derrida's cat in the opening pages of The Animal That Therefore I Am …

The Power And Joy Of Derby: Women’S Participation, Empowerment, And Transformation In A Flat-Track Roller Derby Team, John Paul, Sharla Blank Jan 2015

The Power And Joy Of Derby: Women’S Participation, Empowerment, And Transformation In A Flat-Track Roller Derby Team, John Paul, Sharla Blank

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

In what ways do sports make a difference in the lives of the people who play them? In this paper, we employ a sporting feminist perspective to answer this question and detail how women benefit from the sport of roller derby. Our analyses are structured around the themes of the body (exploring examples of bodily empowerment and reconceptualization); the team (highlighting feminist themes of loyalty and team as family); and the crowd (identifying the ways in which derby is “sold” to the crowd, as well as the ways in which athletes use derby to challenge conceptions of beauty, desirability, and …

A War At The Heart Of Man: The Structure And Construction Of Ships Bound For Africa, Jessica A. Glickman Jan 2015

A War At The Heart Of Man: The Structure And Construction Of Ships Bound For Africa, Jessica A. Glickman

Open Access Master's Theses

Since the abolition of the international slave trade in 1807, and even before, scholars and activists have focused on the conditions Africans experienced during the Middle Passage. Surprisingly, little attention has been paid to the ships that carried the captives. This study will examine the historical and archaeological evidence of the vessels involved in the slave trade. It will address their form and function; and why and how they were built? It will also address the question of design-dedicated slave ships and the issue of whether or not some slave ships were built specially for the trade. This study will …

Dressing History: Costume As Communication In Massachussetts Historical Tours, Meredith Wilcox-Levine Jan 2015

Dressing History: Costume As Communication In Massachussetts Historical Tours, Meredith Wilcox-Levine

Open Access Master's Theses

This study sought to determine the dual role of costume in performance beyond that of visual entertainment, both as a creator of "historical" space and as a conduit for the transfer of meaning as observed on costumed guides in the spectacle of guided tours in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. A series of site visits, tour shadowing, questionnaires and interviews with tour guides and tourists was used to gain an understanding of the way in which costumes assist live performance in creating an educational, historical atmosphere. Conclusions concerning the success of costume as a non-verbal communication tool, a promoter of visibility …

"A Great And Terrible Event": Historical Evidence For The 551 Ce Tsunami At Akko, Israel, Emma Heidtman Jan 2015

"A Great And Terrible Event": Historical Evidence For The 551 Ce Tsunami At Akko, Israel, Emma Heidtman

Open Access Master's Theses

In 2001, the Old City of Akko in northern Israel was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. This designation was based on the Old City's well-preserved Ottoman and Islamic-era town and the partly subterranean ruins of the once-thriving Crusader port. Five years of excavation, from 2009 to 2014, have uncovered more of Akko's history as a strategic naval outpost for several iterations of Mediterranean Sea power, particularly during the Hellenistic Age. However, evidence for Akko's harbor operations during the Byzantine period is still being uncovered. In light of recent discoveries in geoarchaeology, scientists have learned that part of Akko's Byzantine …
