Fire District Impacts On Coastal Access In Rhode Island, Annie Longo Jan 2025

Fire District Impacts On Coastal Access In Rhode Island, Annie Longo

Open Access Master's Theses

There are forty-two fire districts in the coastal state of Rhode Island, nine of which are now archaically named, as they no longer provide firefighting services nor have any firefighting responsibilities. Weekapaug, Watch Hill, and Bonnet Shores fire districts are three coastal fire districts that are uninvolved with fire suppression generally, aside from the occasional bonfire permit or fireworks show. Fire districts are quasi-public entities with taxing authorities and land ownership capabilities that act as the “keepers” of many miles of pristine coastline, instead of strictly as fire departments. The actions of these fire districts often conflict with coastal access …

Metabarcoding-Biomass Relationships And Internal Standards For Quantitative Dna Metabarcoding, Frances Webber Jan 2025

Metabarcoding-Biomass Relationships And Internal Standards For Quantitative Dna Metabarcoding, Frances Webber

Open Access Master's Theses

DNA metabarcoding has been widely adopted due to its power in investigating the composition of protistan communities, accurately identifying even small and cryptic taxa. However, the compositional nature of DNA metabarcoding results, and the distortion of natural abundances due to variation of the often-used 18S rRNA gene copy number over several orders of magnitude, renders these results semi-quantitative at best, limiting the application of DNA metabarcoding to ecological study. Here, we constructed mock communities from uni-algal cultures of taxonomically diverse phytoplankton and conducted metabarcoding using multiple primer sets and both DNA and cDNA as PCR templates. For each culture, chlorophyll …

Finite Element Modeling Of Offshore Wind Monopile Impact Pile Driving In Comsol Multiphysics, Brendan J. Giordano Jan 2025

Finite Element Modeling Of Offshore Wind Monopile Impact Pile Driving In Comsol Multiphysics, Brendan J. Giordano

Open Access Master's Theses

The primary foundation type for offshore wind farms are large-diameter monopiles, which are installed with an impact hammer that produces a high-intensity, broadband impulsive signal that radiates acoustic energy in the water column and seafloor. This signal generates multiple waves such as compressional, shear and Scholte (or interface) waves. Scholte waves travel on the water-sediment interface and contain high-intensity, low-frequency energy that benthic species of fish and invertebrates could possibly detect. COMSOL Multiphysics, which is a finite element modeling software, was used to develop two transient models of impact pile driving to measure Scholte wave particle motion (displacement, velocity, acceleration) …

Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Hostile Attribution On Adult Romantic Relationship Dynamics, Richeila Lora

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine whether experiencing ACEs and hostile attributions led to engaging in conflict behaviors in adult romantic relationships. Additionally, it was examined whether hostile attributions served as a moderator in the relationship between experiencing ACEs and engaging in conflict behaviors. Participants were adults (N = 3.684) from the German Family Panel dataset. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the associations between experiencing ACEs, hostile attributions, and conflict behaviors. It was found that both experiencing ACEs and hostile attributions were related to engaging in conflict behaviors. However, hostile attributions did not serve as …

Herbivore Kairomones Affect Germination Speed, Seedling Growth, And Herbivory, Brooke Pellegrini Jan 2025

Herbivore Kairomones Affect Germination Speed, Seedling Growth, And Herbivory, Brooke Pellegrini

Open Access Master's Theses

Seeds and seedlings are particularly vulnerable to herbivory. Unlike mature plants, which can wait until herbivory is experienced to induce defense, seeds and seedlings face mortality if they wait. Slug mucus functions as a kairomone, a non-attack-related substance emitted by consumers that is detected by a prey species (in this case, plants). While snail mucus has been shown to induce defense in seedlings, it is not widely confirmed whether slugs have the same effect and whether seeds can also detect and react to such herbivore cues. We investigated how exposure to Arion subfuscus mucus affected growth and defense in Brassica …

Field Performance Evaluation Of Selectively Bred Eastern Oyster Lines In New Jersey And Rhode Island, Seraphina Satkowski

Open Access Master's Theses

Eastern oyster aquaculture has increased steadily over the last three decades, but the industry has yet to achieve its full potential. In the Northeast USA, production is limited in part by a lack of high performing stocks suited to the geographically broad and heterogenous growing environments. For this study, hatchery lines from Maine, New York, and New Jersey as well as crosses between each hatchery line and the selectively bred Northeast high survival (NEHÒ) line, were deployed at oyster farms in Rhode Island and New Jersey for performance evaluation. Replicate bags of each line were stocked and maintained according to …

Advancing Sampling And Expanding Measurement Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances In Natural Waters., Jarod Snook Jan 2025

Advancing Sampling And Expanding Measurement Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances In Natural Waters., Jarod Snook

Open Access Dissertations

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have gained much attention over the last several years in environmental science and engineering communities. They pose a unique challenge: persistent and toxic like several other legacy pollutants, but with additional surfactant and amphiphilic properties increasing the complexity of chemical interactions. Thus, many scientific questions remain regarding the environmental transport, fate, and interactions of PFAS released into natural waters. The dissertation research presented here has focused on several of these questions and knowledge gaps in a vast range of scales - from molecular interactions to global transport of PFAS - all addressing the challenge of …

Ischemia-Induced Cytoskeletal And Nuclear Disruptions Drive Neuronal Death And Dysfunction: Insights Into The Connection Between Stroke And Dementia From In Vitro And In Vivo Models Of Stroke, Emily Potts Jan 2025

Ischemia-Induced Cytoskeletal And Nuclear Disruptions Drive Neuronal Death And Dysfunction: Insights Into The Connection Between Stroke And Dementia From In Vitro And In Vivo Models Of Stroke, Emily Potts

Open Access Dissertations

Stroke and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) represent two of the leading causes of neurological disability worldwide, and their prevalence is expected to rise as the global population ages. Although stroke is traditionally viewed as an acute vascular event, a growing body of evidence suggests that transient ischemic injury can trigger lasting cellular disturbances that increase neuronal vulnerability to later neurodegeneration. Understanding how ischemic stress alters neuronal structure and function, and how these changes may overlap with pathways implicated in ADRD, is an emerging focus for stroke and neurodegenerative researchers. This dissertation addresses these questions through an integrated combination …

Documenting The Effects Of Laboratory Sorting In Zooarchaeology: Lessons Learned From The Čḯxwicən Project, Kristine Bovy, Virginia L. Butler, Michael A. Etnier, Sarah K. Campbell Jan 2025

Documenting The Effects Of Laboratory Sorting In Zooarchaeology: Lessons Learned From The Čḯxwicən Project, Kristine Bovy, Virginia L. Butler, Michael A. Etnier, Sarah K. Campbell

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Zooarchaeologists routinely analyze assemblages that were initially sorted into major animal type (birds, mammals, fish, invertebrates) by students or lab technicians with varied backgrounds in zooarchaeology. Sorting errors are probably made in this initial phase, which can affect taxonomic representation and understanding of human–animal relationships. Recent study of the immense faunal assemblage (over 1 million NSP [Number of Specimens]) from Čḯxwicən (45CA523), a 2,700-year-old Lower Elwha Klallam village located on the coast of Washington (USA), allows us to systematically analyze trends in sorting errors. For example, 22.6% of the bird bones included in our sample were initially missorted into other …

Nanotube Spectral Fingerprinting And Machine Learning For Optimized Bioimaging/Sensing And Disease Detection Applications In Als, Rodrigo Monroy Lopez

Open Access Master's Theses

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) possess unique physicochemical and optical properties that make them ideal candidates for biomedical imaging, biosensing, and disease diagnostics. This thesis explores the potential of SWCNT-based spectral fingerprinting combined with ML (Machine Learning) algorithms to optimize bioimaging, disease detection and prediction, with a specific focus on differentiating between healthy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) lymphoblastic patient samples. By functionalizing SWCNTs with single-stranded DNA, we enhance their stability and target specificity, enabling their application in serum patient samples.

A comprehensive spectral analysis of DNA-SWCNTs was conducted using near-infrared fluorescence spectroscopy and other characterization techniques, including UV-Vis-absorption spectroscopy. The …

The P3 Event-Related Potential (Erp) In Visual And Auditory Tasks: Implications For Executive Functioning In Adhd Preadolescent Children, Alex Visal Seng Jan 2025

The P3 Event-Related Potential (Erp) In Visual And Auditory Tasks: Implications For Executive Functioning In Adhd Preadolescent Children, Alex Visal Seng

Open Access Master's Theses

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a widespread psychological disorder in children, poorly impacting executive functioning domains of inhibitory control and working memory. Event-related potentials (ERPs) provide neuroelectric insight into these cognitive processes. However, most ERP research focuses on one task type, limiting direct comparisons of cognitive demands across different task paradigms. This study examined P3 amplitude and latency in ADHD children using a visual NoGo task (response inhibition) and an auditory oddball task (working memory), and associations between the P3 ERP and behavioral measures of executive functions.

Cross-sectional data of symptomatic ADHD children (N=13; F=5; aged 9.15 ± 1.86 years) were …

The Bodhi App: A Post-Trauma Self-Regulation App For People With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Liam Cannon

Open Access Master's Theses

People in the United States living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) often experience trauma at a disproportionate rate. Due to societal and personal barriers, individuals with I/DD have problems with gaining access to therapy, thus often having to live with the negative effects of their untreated trauma. The effects of untreated trauma can cause severe impairment which affects a person’s quality of life and emotional, social, and physical development.

Post-trauma self-regulation is a way of doing activities to regulate one’s emotions to help cope with the negative effects of trauma. It has been shown as an effective method of …

From Lawns To Life: Landscaping For Biodiversity On Mason’S Island, Margit Burgess Jan 2025

From Lawns To Life: Landscaping For Biodiversity On Mason’S Island, Margit Burgess

Open Access Master's Theses

The collapse of biodiversity is an existential threat to life on Earth. Residential landscapes, dominated by open lawns maintained in turfgrass, do not support biodiversity. In the United States, turfgrass has replaced native landscapes in over 40 million acres, with 500 square miles added each year (Tallamy, 2019). Of the 78% of the U.S. land that is privately owned, approximately 135 million acres - nearly twice the size of all national parks combined - are residential (Milesi et al., 2005). With a shift in private landscape management, this land could present a largely untapped opportunity for biodiversity restoration and social …

Investigating The Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices In Reducing Fecal Bacteria In Narrow River, Rhode Island, Katherine Thompson

Open Access Master's Theses

Fecal bacterial contamination shapes how communities manage and use estuarine waters, with consequences for ecosystem health and public access. In Rhode Island's Narrow River, elevated concentrations of fecal coliforms and enterococci have restricted shellfishing for decades despite ongoing management efforts. From 2004 to 2018, local organizations implemented Best Management Practices (BMPs) to address water quality challenges, yet their effectiveness remains incompletely understood. This study analyzes three decades of monitoring data using linear regression, generalized additive models, and Before After Control Impact methods to evaluate BMP effectiveness and identify key drivers of contamination. Linear regression revealed spatially variable trends, with bacterial …

The Coral Carousel: A Device And Method For In-Situ Propagation Of Deep-Sea Corals, Gregory Bales

Open Access Master's Theses

The research described herein covers the development of a tool station for performing in-situ propagation of corals using a work class ROV. This includes a system for manipulating coral fragments and affixing them to a cement base plug. To validate this tool station, testing was performed both in the lab as well as at depth in the Gulf of Mexico. As restoration of shallow-water corals has grown in popularity, many techniques have been developed for propagation. However, it is difficult or inappropriate to directly apply these techniques to deep-sea corals. While some forms of diving are capable of approaching the …

Estrogen Receptor-Mediated Effects Of Resveratrol On Muscle Function, David Ayi-Bonte

Open Access Master's Theses

Artemis missions are set to send the next man and the first woman back to the moon and enable long-term missions on the lunar surface. However, exposure to lunar gravity has significant physiological effects characterized by loss of muscle mass, weakness and decreased bone density. Nutraceutical countermeasures such as Resveratrol (RSV), a naturally occurring polyphenol, have been identified as promising strategies to preserve musculoskeletal health; however, its pleiotropic effect hinders our ability to identify the primary cellular pathways through which it delivers its benefits. Furthermore, its efficacy in simulated lunar gravity is unknown. Based on the benefits observed with RSV …

Ultra-Processed Food Intake And Dietary Intake Behaviors In Young Adults, Alexandra Black Larcom Jan 2025

Ultra-Processed Food Intake And Dietary Intake Behaviors In Young Adults, Alexandra Black Larcom

Open Access Dissertations

Ultra-processed food (UPF) intake has been positively associated with adverse health outcomes and poor diet quality (DQ). UPFs tend to be of lower nutritional quality (NQ) than less processed foods, though NQ varies widely within each category of food processing. Young adults are the highest consumers of UPF, but UPF intake and related behaviors have not been examined in college students, a key subset of young adults. UPF overconsumption at meals has been proposed as a mechanism for the association between UPF intake, poor DQ, and adverse health outcomes, though no existing studies have considered NQ. Further, consumer understanding of …

In this study, I used an ecological and a cultural perspective to examine the first-year experiences of two cohorts of biology students exposed to multiple equity-minded High Impact Practices (HIPs) designed to promote their persistence and science identity development.

In chapter 1, I applied Graham et al.’s Persistence Framework (2013) and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory (1977) to investigate the bridges and barriers to persistence that biology students face while experiencing either an equity minded learning community, a first-year seminar, a course-based research experience, and/or an active learning introductory biology course. Using a mixed methods approach that focused on phenomenology, I …

The Chemical Ecology Of A Caribbean Boulder Coral During Restoration And The Interplay Between Fish Predation And Microbiome Variation, Catherine E. Raker Jan 2025

The Chemical Ecology Of A Caribbean Boulder Coral During Restoration And The Interplay Between Fish Predation And Microbiome Variation, Catherine E. Raker

Open Access Dissertations

Coral reefs are one of the most biodiverse and productive ecosystems on the planet. In recent decades, however, climate change and other global threats have caused severe declines in live coral cover worldwide. Coral propagation, or “gardening,” is a popular strategy to attempt to restore healthy corals to degraded reefs. Slow-growing boulder corals are often restored using microfragmentation, where cutting coral colonies into roughly 1 cm2 fragments can increase their growth rates up to 5x. However, extreme early mortality of fragments has been observed in the field, which has been at least partially attributed to predation. It has been …

Design And Deployment Of A Compact Rov For Deep-Sea Research And Exploration, Joshua F. Wood Jan 2025

Design And Deployment Of A Compact Rov For Deep-Sea Research And Exploration, Joshua F. Wood

Open Access Master's Theses

The scientific community has utilized unmanned underwater vehicles for ocean exploration since the mid-twentieth century, resulting in a well-cultivated and ever-changing discipline of ocean technology. The deep-sea environment, specifically, presents unique and harsh criteria due to the increased pressure found at depth and the vehicle components necessary to overcome it. The size and weight of underwater vehicles typically increase as operational depth increases, resulting in physically large systems with high operational costs to accommodate deep-sea research. This project first characterized the effect of length and diameter on carbon fiber pressure housing’s depth tolerance. It then leveraged this data to reduce …

Minimalistic Communication-Based Swarm Slam, Felix B. Koch Jan 2025

Minimalistic Communication-Based Swarm Slam, Felix B. Koch

Open Access Master's Theses

This study presents and validates Range of Communication Swarm SLAM(RCS-SLAM), a novel SLAM approach designed for multi-robot systems using minimal hardware. Unlike traditional methods that rely on range or bearing measurements, RCS-SLAM only uses the identifiers of nearby robots within communication range. In the front-end, each robot constructs an individual pose graph based on its own odometry, while recording communication events with neighboring robots. The key novelty lies in the use of one-hop communication, where robots not only detect nearby peers but also relay received identifiers, effectively acting as transmitters themselves. This mechanism extends the communication graph and enables the …

Oyster larvae aquaculture is an important industry, both economically and environmentally, helping to create sustainable food systems by supplying seed oysters to farms, and also to restoration projects aimed at building coastal resilience and improving water quality by rejuvenating wild populations. However, oyster larvae are highly susceptible to rapid mortality events, crashes, which can seriously impact the industry. One source of these crashes in hatchery systems is vibriosis, caused by pathogenic species of Vibrio bacteria that are ubiquitous in temperate coastal waters, and with rising surface water temperatures their prevalence and virulence are increasing. To prevent these larval crashes from …

Bioaccumulation Of Legacy And Novel Pfas In The Environment, Hesham Taher, Rainer Lohmann Jan 2025

Bioaccumulation Of Legacy And Novel Pfas In The Environment, Hesham Taher, Rainer Lohmann

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The bioaccumulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), both legacy and novel, in the environment presents significant ecological and health risks. PFAS are a diverse group of synthetic chemicals known for their persistence and bioaccumulation, which can cause widespread environmental contamination and health risks. Strong carbon-fluorine bonds give these compounds unparalleled stability, preventing them from degrading and enabling them to endure in a range of environmental matrices, including water, soil, and biota. Legacy PFAS, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), have been extensively studied and regulated, resulting in lower concentrations in some environmental media. However, novel PFAS, …
