The Influence Of Thyroid Feeding On The Pharmacologic Actions Of Certain Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors, Richard N. Carrier Jan 1961

The Influence Of Thyroid Feeding On The Pharmacologic Actions Of Certain Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors, Richard N. Carrier

Open Access Master's Theses

Although a few disparate reports have been published to the contrary, accumulating evidence seems to indicate that the feeding of thyroid extract, or the parenteral administration of thyroxine, produce a decline in the monoamine oxidase activity in the livers of various animals. As a consequence this anti-enzymatic effect, and the resultant biologic sparing of catecholamines, has been incriminated as partly responsible for the hypersensitivity of hyperthyroid animals and isolated tissues, to the pharmacologic actions of sympathomimetic amines. Rather recently a class of anti-melancholic drugs, or “psychic energizers”, have been made clinically available. These agents seem to act as anti-depressants by …

Administration And Transovarial Passage Of Radioactive Glycine In The Genus Dermacentor (Acarina: Ixodidae), Joanne L. Hammar Jan 1959

Administration And Transovarial Passage Of Radioactive Glycine In The Genus Dermacentor (Acarina: Ixodidae), Joanne L. Hammar

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of the investigation is to attempt to make female ticks of the genus Dermacentor radioactive with carbon-14 labeled glycine; to determine whether transovarial passage will take place; and to determine the effect of the isotope (C14) on the fecundity of the female and on the viability of the eggs.

A feeding method described by Chabaud and by Burgdorfer has been adapted for the administering of radioisotopes. Female ticks, Dermacentor variabilis and Dermacentor andersoni, were fed glycine. A micropipette calibrated to hold approximately 0.01 ml. of liquid was drawn out and fitted over the hypostome and …

The French Canadian Migration Into Rhode Island, Gerald Joseph Doiron Jan 1959

The French Canadian Migration Into Rhode Island, Gerald Joseph Doiron

Open Access Master's Theses

The population of Rhode Island is a composite of various nationalities which immigrated into the state in the period 1840-1914. Beginning with the large influx of Irish in the 1840 1s and l850's, the characteristics of' the population began to change, for the foreign born in the period 1860-1900 were increasing four times faster than the native born. Following the Irish, the French Canadians migrated into Rhode Island in the period 1865-1910. During the latter part of the French Canadian movement, the Portugese and the Italians added their strength to the foreign born population living in Rhode Island.

Possible Limiting Factors Of The Ringneck Pheasant Population In Southern Rhode Island, Joan B. Anderson Jan 1956

Possible Limiting Factors Of The Ringneck Pheasant Population In Southern Rhode Island, Joan B. Anderson

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this project was to investigate the possible limiting factors of the ringneck pheasant population in southern Rhode Island. Two factors, food and weather, were considered in detail. The research area chosen was a typical non-urban area of southern Rhode Island, the Great Swamp Wildlife Reservation, in the township of South Kings town. This reservation has been under t he supervision of t he State Division of Fish and Game for the past six years. Census and life history studies were abandoned. after a year of weekly observations because of failure to collect significant amounts of data. An …

Supernatural Folklore Of Rhode Island, Eidola Jean Bourgaize Jan 1956

Supernatural Folklore Of Rhode Island, Eidola Jean Bourgaize

Open Access Master's Theses

Although folklore has attracted nation-wide attention in the past forty years, the task of collecting folk material peculiar to Rhode Island has been neglected. Several recently-published volumes have included small portions of Rhode Island folklore, but this amount has been very limited. In the past one hundred years a number of individuals have shown interest in one particular town or section of the state and have gathered material pertinent to their cause. No one in the past fifty years has made an effort to compile folklore material about the state as a whole and present it in one unified piece. …

Vi Typhoid Flagellar And Heterophile Antibodies In Serums Of Children, Peter Paul Antosia Jan 1954

Vi Typhoid Flagellar And Heterophile Antibodies In Serums Of Children, Peter Paul Antosia

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether Vi, typhoid flagellar (H), and heterophile (sheep hemagglutinating) antibodies were present normally in children. Vi antibodies have been reported in the serums of normal adults. Typhoid H antibodies appear during immunization of adults against typhoid fever and then gradually disappear. Heterophile antibodies have been found in the serums of many normal adults.

One hundred and twenty-six children's serums were obtained from blood specimens submitted to the Rhode Island Hospital laboratory for a variety of diagnostic purposes. The children were between one week and 15 years of age. None was diagnosed as …

A Project In Civic Education In Elementary Schools Through Pupil Participation, Mildred Claire Alger Jan 1954

A Project In Civic Education In Elementary Schools Through Pupil Participation, Mildred Claire Alger

Open Access Master's Theses

Elementary schools have organized their curricula to insure the teaching of fundamental skills and subject matter, such as reading, writing, arithmetic, spelling, social studies, and art. Over the years, schools have assumed other responsibilities upon the insistence of the public which supports education. One of these added responsibilities has been education for citizenship.

Education for citizenship is a vague term and no one seems to I know how t his education is to be accomplished. For a number of years, there have been well conceived plans for attacking this problem in secondary schools with suggestions that some of these approaches …

The Herring Of Block Island Sound, Howard Lawrence Sanders Jan 1951

The Herring Of Block Island Sound, Howard Lawrence Sanders

Open Access Master's Theses

The objectives of this study were to observe the location of the herring catches in Block Island Sound, to perform racial analyses on the fish, and to study the stomach contents both quantitatively and qualitatively. Periodic trips were made on a commercial fishing vessel in Block Island Sound during the winter of 1951 to gather biological data.

This investigation established that herring are to be found in Block Island Sound from about the first of January to the middle of March; that the shoals are made up of two groups, spent adults and immature adolescents; that during January and February …
