The Legal Powers Of Town Councils In Rhode Island, Stephen Aronson Jan 1964

The Legal Powers Of Town Councils In Rhode Island, Stephen Aronson

Open Access Master's Theses

The local governing bodies in Rhode Island are called town councils and are empowered to act as agents of the State in various municipal matters affecting their respective communities. This study surveys the powers of these agencies and attempts to determine the answers to the following four questions:

1. What are the sources of legal powers granted to local town councils by the state and how extensive are these powers?

2. What applicability, if any, does the separation of powers theory have in Rhode Island local government?

3. What legal factors distinguish the president of the town council from other …

Studies On Growth And Development Of Teleost Eggs With Special Reference To Deuterium Enriched Environments, Pyari Mohan Misra Jan 1963

Studies On Growth And Development Of Teleost Eggs With Special Reference To Deuterium Enriched Environments, Pyari Mohan Misra

Open Access Dissertations

Eggs of the brook trout, Salvelinus fontnalis (Mitchell), were hatched in dilute deuterium concentrations of 1, 3 and 9 percent without any observable abnormality. The eggs grew exponentially and showed a significant reduction in growth rate as a function of deuterium concentration. The larvae also grew exponentially and showed a significant but less regular reduction in grows in 1, 3 and 9 percent D2O. The ultimate weight of larvae developed from eggs incubated in the above concentrations of D2O eventually became the same when they were placed in hatchery water. Mortality during embryonic development increased with …

Peanut Oil Meal As A Source Of Protein For Chicks, Ebenezer Winston Agudu Jan 1963

Peanut Oil Meal As A Source Of Protein For Chicks, Ebenezer Winston Agudu

Open Access Master's Theses

Four experiments, each of tour we&ks' duration were conducted to determine the protein quality of peanut 011 meal in broiler chick diets. In the t1rst experiment, samples of united States peanut 011 meal, and some samples from Brazil, supposed to be toxic, were compared in all-vegetable rations. Both peanut 011 meals were found to be interior to so7bean oil meal. An equal mixture of soybean 011 meal and peanut oil meal sustained growth as good as the soybean 011 meal diet. There was high mortality of chicks on the suspected toxic meal.

A biological test tor toxieit7 of the meals, …

The Effect Of Thyroid And Mo911 On Locomotor Activity And Monoamine Oxidase Activity In Mice, Vincent Eugene Reid Jan 1963

The Effect Of Thyroid And Mo911 On Locomotor Activity And Monoamine Oxidase Activity In Mice, Vincent Eugene Reid

Open Access Master's Theses

The relationship of thyroid and monoamine oxidase activity to locomotor responses was investigated. Locomotor activity was measured by use of actophotometers. Four mice were placed in the actophotometer and counts were recorded at specific time intervals up to two hours. The administration of thyroid, M0911, and combined thyroid and M0911 did not alter spontaneous activity significantly. Monoamine oxidase activity of brains and livers was measured in vitro using the Warburg apparatus. The elapsed time for tissue respiration was 28 minutes. Thyroid administration did not alter monoamine oxidase activity significantly in liver but brain activity was decreased. Therapy with M0911 decreased …

The Interrelationships Between Chronic Restraint Stress And Reserpine Sedation: Effects On Pituitary-Adrenal Function And Brain Serotonin And Norepinephrine Levels In Male Albino Rats, John Adam Rosecrans Jan 1963

The Interrelationships Between Chronic Restraint Stress And Reserpine Sedation: Effects On Pituitary-Adrenal Function And Brain Serotonin And Norepinephrine Levels In Male Albino Rats, John Adam Rosecrans

Open Access Dissertations

The General Adaptation Syndrome (G.A.S.) was characterized for chronic forced restraint stress in normal and reserpinized (1 mg/kg, I.P.) male albino rats. This was accomplished by analyzing the interrelationships among brain neurohumoral levels (serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE)), serum corticosterone (KS) levels, and various organ weights such as thymus, testes, pituitaries, and adrenals.

Reserpine was observed to prevent normal rats from adapting to this stress (mortality rate was 50%) possibly via inanition. It was suggested that the overall non-adaptive effects produced could ultimately be due to the ability of reserpine to induce a chemical sympathectomy. Thus, by depleting the A.N.S. …

Chick Embryo Lethal Orphan Virus (Celo) As A Tissue Culture Contaminant, Dharam Vir Ablashi Jan 1962

Chick Embryo Lethal Orphan Virus (Celo) As A Tissue Culture Contaminant, Dharam Vir Ablashi

Open Access Master's Theses

In each of ten weekly trials, 105 eggs from mated White Leghorn hens were divided into sets of 15 eggs each. Yolks of some of these eggs carried CELO antibodies. Before incubation, the various sets of eggs were inoculated through t he air cell into the albumen with decimal dilutions of the virus, l0-1 through l0-5. In each trial two controls were maintained. One set was inoculated with normal allantoamniotic fluid, the other was not inoculated.

AAF harvested from CELO exposed embryos dying during incubation was found to carry the CELO virus. The higher concentrations of virus …

The Role Of The Westchester Guides During The American Revolution, George W. Browne Jan 1962

The Role Of The Westchester Guides During The American Revolution, George W. Browne

Open Access Master's Theses

The control of the Hudson River was of utmost importance to both the British an the Americans during the Revolution. If the British had been able to gain unopposed navigation on the river, they could have split the colonies in half. Cooperation between the Northern colonies and the Southern colonies would have ended and Washington would have been unable to obtain much needed supplies from the north. In order to protect the river, forts were built in 1776 on the New Jersey and Westchester sides of the Hudson to stop British navigation and a defensive line was established across Westchester …

The Transparent Triviality Of Shakespeare's Shylock, Walter Lawton Barker Jan 1962

The Transparent Triviality Of Shakespeare's Shylock, Walter Lawton Barker

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis is a study of William Shakespeare's characterization of his famous Jew, Shylock, the antagonist of The Merchant of Venice. While the bulk of the scholarly criticism on Shylock has reflected for the most part of the coloring that different centuries have placed on varying attitudes toward the Jew, I have attempted to restore the historical perspective to an appreciation of this fascinating character.

Shylock’s participation in the drama is as a Jew and a usurer, two of the most hated and ridiculed figures in the history of Western Civilization. As such they became stock conventional characters on …
