The Effects Of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors Upon Urinary Excretion Of Dopamine And Changes In Arterial Blood Pressure, Charles Martin Vacca Jan 1967

The Effects Of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors Upon Urinary Excretion Of Dopamine And Changes In Arterial Blood Pressure, Charles Martin Vacca

Open Access Master's Theses

The relationship between urinary dopamine levels, and arterial blood pressure was studied in male albino rats.

The experimental rats were subjected to a right nephrectomy and received a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, either tranylcypromine or pargyline.

The blood pressure of the group receiving tranylcypromine was elevated to approximately 120 mm Hg during the first two weeks. During weeks seven and eight the blood pressure was further elevated to approximately 130 mm Hg but dropped back gradually to 115 mm Hg for a net drop of 3 percent where it remained to the end of the study. The blood pressure of the …

Toxicology Of Muconomycins A And B: Inflammatory Properties Of Two New Antibiotics: Electrolyte And Protein Characterization Of Inflammatory Exudate And Production Of A Model State Of Ascites In Male Albino Rats, Anthony Michael Guarino Jan 1966

Toxicology Of Muconomycins A And B: Inflammatory Properties Of Two New Antibiotics: Electrolyte And Protein Characterization Of Inflammatory Exudate And Production Of A Model State Of Ascites In Male Albino Rats, Anthony Michael Guarino

Open Access Dissertations

Toxicological investigations were conducted on two new antibiotics, Muconomycin A and Muconomycin B. These nonnitrogenous antibiotics were found to be highly toxic and capable of inducing profound inflammation in the peritoneal cavity of male albino rats. Either antibiotic produced large volumes \10-20 ml) of inflammatory exudate even when injected (i.p.) in quantities of 1.6 x 10-10 moles. An extensive profile of the electrolytes and proteins found in inflammatory exudates was developed./ Simultaneous assays of the blood serum of treated rats provided a basis for comparing the concentrations of constituents of serum with those of the exudate./ This approach to the …

The Comparative Cardio-Inhibitory Effects Of Certain Cyclohexanol And Cyclohexylamine Derivatives, David Charles Kosegarten Jan 1966

The Comparative Cardio-Inhibitory Effects Of Certain Cyclohexanol And Cyclohexylamine Derivatives, David Charles Kosegarten

Open Access Master's Theses

Derivatives of cyclohexanol and cyclohexylamine were pharmacologically screened for cardioplegic effects on intact anesthetized rats, and isolated guinea pig hearts. Evaluation of potency was based on the ability to depress rat carotid blood pressure, and to produce cardiac arrest in the isolated guinea pig heart. As a group, the non-ethynyl cyclohexanol derivatives were more potent in producing a hypotensive response, than were the derivatives of cyclohexylamine. trans-2-o-Tolyl-cis-l, 4-cyclohexanediol and trans-2-o-tolyl-trans-l, 5-cyclohexanediol were equally effective and the most active. trans-2-(p-Chlorophenyl)-N, N-dimethylcyclohexylamine was the least active, and the only compound to produce a pressor response. Conversely, the cyclohexylamines were more potent cardioplegic …

Some Pharmacological Properties Of Trimethoxy Analogs Of Pheniramine, Tripelennamine, And Diphenhydramine, Ronald Otto Langner Jan 1966

Some Pharmacological Properties Of Trimethoxy Analogs Of Pheniramine, Tripelennamine, And Diphenhydramine, Ronald Otto Langner

Open Access Master's Theses

Trimethoxy analogs of tripelennamine, diphenhydramine, and pheniramine were studied to determine the influences of the trimethoxy group on the pharmacological activity of known antihistamines. In this investigation, the ability of the parent compounds and their analogs to antagonize the histamine-induced contractions of guinea pig ilia were studied as well as their effects on the systolic blood pressure of male albino rats and on the central nervous system of mice as measured by the actophotometer. The trimethoxy analogs were comparatively weak competitive antagonists of histamine with the exception of N,N,-Diethyl-N'(2-pyridyl)-N'-(3,4,S-trimethoxybenzyl) ethylenediamine Dicyclamate (De-TMPBZ) and N,N,-Diethyl-N'-(2-pyridyl)-N'-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl) ethylenediamine Disuccinate (TMPBZ) which were weak …

Comparative Effects Of Certain Derivatives Of Cyclohexanol, Sonia Margarita Gerena Jan 1966

Comparative Effects Of Certain Derivatives Of Cyclohexanol, Sonia Margarita Gerena

Open Access Master's Theses

Derivatives of cyclohexanol were screened for pharmacological effects on intact anesthetized rats, isolated guinea pig heart, isolated rat atria and isolated rabbit small intestine. All the compounds tested produced a hypotensive response and cardio-inhibitory effects varying from slight depression to complete arrest. On the basis of recovery from induced cardiac arrest none of the compounds appeared to be cardio-toxic. All the compounds produced inhibitory effects on the isolated small intestine in varying degrees. Methyl 3-hydroxy-2-o-tolylcyclohexylacetate and trans-3-oxo-2-o-tolylcyclohexylacetic acid were equally potent and the most effective in their cardiovascular effects whereas the ketal from glycerol and 2-o-tolylcyclohexylacetate was the most effective …
