Environmental Improvement: A Concept For Harbor Maintenance Programs For Long Island Sound, John-Robert Curtin
Environmental Improvement: A Concept For Harbor Maintenance Programs For Long Island Sound, John-Robert Curtin
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper suggests a comprehensive approach to maintenance dredging and maintenance dredge disposal for Connecticut in a carefully-regulated manner that will improve, rather than impair, the natural quality of the Sound. It proposes an interim measure that would allow for the continued operation of Connecticuts Commercial Harbor areas until a permanent program, together with the necessary technological advances, can be implemented to handle dredge disposal. This paper is based on data presently available on New Haven Harbor, presented in a report on the environmental quality of dredge spoils proposed to be removed from one area within New Haven Harbor known …

The Effects Of Extended Blocking, Motivation, Chain Flooding, And Safety Testing On Approach Measured Fear Reduction Following Response Prevention In Rats, Donald Spring
Open Access Dissertations
Sixty male Wistar rats were trained to avoid a CS grid with 0.7mA(UCS) shock under food deprived and non-deprived conditions. There was no difference in deprived and non-deprived conditions in fear reduction as measured by subsequent approaches to the CS following response prevention. Response prevention varied over 3 treatments consisting of O response prevention for 20 subjects, response prevention until exploratory behavior occurred for 10 cumulative seconds for 20 other subjects, and response prevention until exploratory behavior occurred for 120 cumulative seconds for 20 other subjects. No differences were found between these treatments in approach measures to the CS during …

The Relationships Among Physiological Measures Of Anxiety And Psychological Measures Of Anxiety: A Multivariate, Naturalistic Approach, Gary Robert Morrow
The Relationships Among Physiological Measures Of Anxiety And Psychological Measures Of Anxiety: A Multivariate, Naturalistic Approach, Gary Robert Morrow
Open Access Master's Theses
An examination of the hypothesis the that a significant relationships would be found between a set of four commonly employed psychological instruments for assessing anxiety and a set of seven commonly employed physiological measures of anxiety was carried out. The research was done in naturalistic setting to improve on the typical labor-story anxiety research that has, of late, been highly criticized and analyzed with a multivariate approach as advocated by many critics of traditional bi-variate research. The methodological approach of naturalistic research was operationalized by employing 54 patients suffering a first myocardial infarction admitted to a large metropolitan hospital.

Human Self-Punitive Behavior During Uncertainty Of Delivery Time Of Unavoidable Shocks, Thomas H. Walsh
Human Self-Punitive Behavior During Uncertainty Of Delivery Time Of Unavoidable Shocks, Thomas H. Walsh
Open Access Master's Theses
Twenty psychology graduate school subjects, ten males and ten females, established their own levels of aversity for two series of ten each unavoidable electric shocks, with each shock lasting 2.5 seconds and scheduled to be delivered automatically every 30 seconds. Condition #1 (high predictability) subjects could see a timer and know when 30 seconds had passed; Condition #2 (low predictability) subjects could not. All subjects could push a button and self-administer shocks at will. The data did not support the hypotheses that low-predictability subjects would self-administer more shocks and. would take less total time for the series of shocks. Females …
Startle Reaction Times In The Starling (Sturnus Vulgaris), Harold Frederick Pomeroy
Startle Reaction Times In The Starling (Sturnus Vulgaris), Harold Frederick Pomeroy
Open Access Master's Theses
Startle response times of Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) to auditory and visual stimuli have been determined. Birds were placed into an anechoic chamber and exposed to either a one msec flash of unfiltered white light, or a three msec pure tone burst. An electronic detection system for monitoring and recording the activity of the birds was designed and used for the experiments. Display modes of the recording apparatus allowed for an accuracy to I0-4 seconds in measuring reaction times. The mean reaction time of birds to light stimuli was 76.38 msec ± 15.32 msec. The mean reaction time to …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Sulfhydryl Activity And The Toxicity Of A Series Of Vinyl Sulfone Molluscicidal Agents, Paul Thomas La Rocca
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between The Sulfhydryl Activity And The Toxicity Of A Series Of Vinyl Sulfone Molluscicidal Agents, Paul Thomas La Rocca
Open Access Master's Theses
A series of vinyl sulfone molluscicidal agents was tested to determine the ability to interfere with: a) the color-forming reaction between cysteine and 5,5’–dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB); b) the activity of malic dehydrogenase, a typical sulfhydryl-dependent enzyme; c) the in vitro endogenous respiration in the snail, Australorbis glabratus; and d) the in vivo and in vitro endogenous respiration and pyruvate metabolism of liver, brain, and kidney of albino rats. An approximate intraperitonea LD50 was determined for vinyl sulfone in male and female albino rats. The effect of vinyl sulfone on cysteine treated albino rats was also observed. Vinyl sulfone and …

The Weathering And Subsequent Source Identification Of Oil Spills Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Patricia F. Lynch
The Weathering And Subsequent Source Identification Of Oil Spills Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Patricia F. Lynch
Open Access Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to develop a technique for the identification of the source of an oil spill. The method had to be quick and easy to perform, require a minimum of sample pretreatment and provide an unambiguous identification of the petroleum source. We found that infrared spectroscopy fulfilled all of these requirements. In the spectral region between 650 cm-1 and 1200 cm-1 petroleum samples have as many as 27 absorptions and the relative intensities of these absorptions provide a unique fingerprint for each sample. The intensities of the 21 selected absorptions are coded and stored …
Kierkegaard And Nietzsche On The Self: An Inquiry Into The Role Of Power, Joan M. Hoy
Kierkegaard And Nietzsche On The Self: An Inquiry Into The Role Of Power, Joan M. Hoy
Open Access Master's Theses
This thesis deals with the problem of becoming a self as it is presented in the philosophies of Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche. Specifically it is concerned with the role which power plays in the development of the self. Since becoming a self involves motivation the problem is viewed in terms of Dietrich Von Hildebrand's categories of importance and their role in motivation.
The categories importance are presented as the basic viewpoint from which the two philosophers are
studied. This is followed by a presentation of basic notions of the self as they appear in the writing of Nietzsche and …
Pharmacological Evaluation Of An Extract From Eisenia Bicyclis, David Michael Whitaker
Pharmacological Evaluation Of An Extract From Eisenia Bicyclis, David Michael Whitaker
Open Access Master's Theses
An extract from Eisenia bicyclis containing –principally a polyphenolic polymer was examined for pharmacological activity. The investigation centered around the established activity of a model polyphenolic compound, phloroglucinol. Studies on inflammation and alteration of hepatic microsomal enzyme activity were also performed. Heat denaturation of a 0.15% bovine serum albumin solution was inhibited 96% by the addition of the material at a final concentration of 0.32 mg/ml. Since stabilization of such solutions is often indicative 9f anti-inflammatory activity, direct measurements of this activity were made. The inhibition of formation of carrageenan-induced rat paw edema was utilized as a test system. As …
Moral Autonomy And Radical Evil In The Philosophy Of Kant, David George Horner
Moral Autonomy And Radical Evil In The Philosophy Of Kant, David George Horner
Open Access Master's Theses
The problem which this thesis proposes to treat is Immanuel Kant’s attempt to frame an ethical system ultimately based on the postulate of moral freedom (i.e. moral autonomy), and at the same time to espouse what he describes as the doctrine of “radical innate evil in human nature.” While the examination may well have significant implications for moral and religious theories beyond the boundaries of Kantian thought, generally these tempting vistas are not explored in the thesis. Indeed, the issue may also have broad repercussions for Kant’s philosophy in general but this too lies beyond the scope of the thesis. …

The Vocal And Behavioral Reactions Of The White Whale, Or Beluga, (Delphinapterus Leucas) To Underwater Playback Of Natural And Synthetic Beluga Sounds, David W. Morgan
Open Access Dissertations
Underwater playback of natural and synthetic sounds was shown to be an effective tool for investigation of communication in Delphinapterus leucas, the beluga. Natural sounds were used to determine the significance of the sounds to the animals, and synthetic sounds to determine some of the parameters of the sounds that had an effect on their significance. The general, overall response of captive animals was an increase of interest in the sound source during the playback, with decreasing interest in the three minutes following playback. The general response of free-swimming belugas was a decrease of vocal emissions. A strong, stereotyped, …
