Operant Analysis Of Behavior Associated With Oral Self-Administration Of Drug Solutions In Rats, Joseph David Zabik Jan 1974

Operant Analysis Of Behavior Associated With Oral Self-Administration Of Drug Solutions In Rats, Joseph David Zabik

Open Access Dissertations

Since many drugs which are abused by man are taken orally, it was desirable to develop a method suitable to quantitatively and reliably measure oral self-administration of drugs and their effects on behavior in experimental animals.

Water deprived rats were trained to lick for drug solutions (4.34 ul/lick) and bar press for food on a Fixed Interval (FI) 60 second schedule and press another bar for secondary reinforcements on a Fixed Ratio (FR)-5 schedule as three concurrent operants. Non-discriminated responding was inconsequential. An appropriate drug solution was substituted for water or the drugs were injected intraperitoneally before the session. For …

A Cost-Production Analysis Of Trap And Hand Line Fishing In Puerto Rico, Jean Francois Abgrall Jan 1974

A Cost-Production Analysis Of Trap And Hand Line Fishing In Puerto Rico, Jean Francois Abgrall

Open Access Dissertations

This study analyzes the cost-production relationship of trap and hand line fishing in Puerto Rico. A model of the fishing family firm is designed which is similar to the traditional neo-classical model of the fishing industry. The catch functions, of the Cobb-Douglas type, are estimated using the single least squares methods. Tests of technical efficiency and tests of price efficiency are then conducted to establish if some groups of fishermen are more efficient than others and to verify if the fishermen maximize their profit, given the technical coefficients of the catch function and the level of the prices.

The results …

Symptom And Dynamic Hierarchies In The Systematic Desensitization Of Test Anxiety: An Incentive Approach, William A. Hancur Jan 1974

Symptom And Dynamic Hierarchies In The Systematic Desensitization Of Test Anxiety: An Incentive Approach, William A. Hancur

Open Access Dissertations

This study proposed to determine the effectiveness of systematic desensitization with integrative, symptom and dynamic hierarchies. It was hypothesized that systematic desensitization with integrative hierarchies would be more effective in reducing disruptive test anxiety than systematic desensitization with either symptom or dynamic hierarchies alone. It was further hypothesized that systematic desensitization with both integrative and dynamic hierarchies would be superior to systematic desensitization with symptom hierarchies in generalization to anxieties associated with test anxiety.

Forty-four test anxious college males were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: 1) a symptom group treated with systematic desensitization based on cues related …

Description And Probable Behavioral Significance Of Grey Seal (Halichoerus Grypus) Vocalizations, Jack Schneider Jan 1974

Description And Probable Behavioral Significance Of Grey Seal (Halichoerus Grypus) Vocalizations, Jack Schneider

Open Access Master's Theses

Twelve sound types, spectrographically analyzed from recordings of captive and wild grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), included continuous and pulsed sounds. All continuous sounds showed sub-harmonic energy, and emphasized frequencies between 100 and 800 Hz. Click type sounds had energy to greater than 60 kHz, and were repeated at rates up to 1500/sec.

A behavioral significance is hypothesized for most sounds.

A Direct Comparison Of Four Response Elimination Procedures In Rats, William A. Pacitti Jan 1974

A Direct Comparison Of Four Response Elimination Procedures In Rats, William A. Pacitti

Open Access Master's Theses

Thirty two rats received training on a VI 30 second reinforcement schedule and were then shift ed to one of four response elimination procedures: Extinction Training, Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior. Counter-conditioning of a Different Response, and Counter-conditioning of a Similar Response. Evaluated in terms of efficiency (number of original responses made during Treatment) and durability (number of original responses made in Test and Reconditioning Phases), Counter-conditioning a similar response emerged as the least efficient response elimination procedure and the least durable. Extinction Training was low in efficiency, but relatively more durable than both Counter- conditioning techniques. Counter-conditioning a Different …

Thiol Amino Acids In Quality Control And Nutritive Value Of Fishery Products, Mohsin Ali Jan 1974

Thiol Amino Acids In Quality Control And Nutritive Value Of Fishery Products, Mohsin Ali

Open Access Dissertations

The quality of fish products is dependent upon the raw material and the process employed for their reproduction. The availability of the amino acids present in the protein component determine the value of the product as a food supplement. Amino acid availqbility can be determined by chemical, biochemical and biological methods. Most of the procedures are rather lengthy. A widely used chemical procedure, the available lysine method, is based on determining the quality of total lysine having free or reactable epsilon amino groups. This research has been directed toward the development of a procedure for determining the quantity of reactable …

Effect Of Selected Drugs On Control Of Morphine Withdrawal Hypothermia Induced By Morphine Or Conditional Stimulus Associated With Morphine, Richard B. Drawbaugh Jan 1974

Effect Of Selected Drugs On Control Of Morphine Withdrawal Hypothermia Induced By Morphine Or Conditional Stimulus Associated With Morphine, Richard B. Drawbaugh

Open Access Master's Theses

The present investigation was undertaken to demonstrate how a conditional stimulus (cs) similar to the action of morphine, can increase rectal temperature during morphine abstinence. Also, the study implicates certain neurotransmitters which are involved in the ef'f'ect of conditional stimulus and of morphine to affect rectal temperature. Rats were given two equally spaced injections of morphine sulfate daily, each injection being paired with a bell. The bell was presented for one minute and the injection was given during the last 15 seconds. This procedure was followed for lJ-15 days. Twenty-four hours after the last injection the bell was presented alone. …

Quinoxaline 1, 4-Dioxides. A Mechanistic Study Of Their Formation And The Structural Assignment Of 6(7) Isomeric Products, Nicholas D. Alteri Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses

Two types of reactions were used to study the effect of substituents (CH3, OCH3) on the condensation of 5(6) substituted benzofurazan 1-oxides (1) with (methylthio)-2-propanone (BFO Reaction, A), and 4- substituted o-quinone dioximes (2) with pyruvaldhyde (OQD Reaction, B). The nitrogen atom is an electrophile in reaction A and nucleophile in reaction B.

Biological Inactivation Of Proteins By The Maillard Reaction, Jaime Amaya-Farfan Jan 1974

Biological Inactivation Of Proteins By The Maillard Reaction, Jaime Amaya-Farfan

Open Access Dissertations

The effects of the Maillard reaction on the biological activity of insulin as a hormone, and on the utilization of egg albumin as a source of amino acids have been studied.

In order to know the number, the position, and the effect of the glucose residues that bind a protein, crystalline zinc insulin was stored with 14C-glucose at 37° and 68% R.H. for four months. The unreacted sugar was separated from insulin in a Bio-Gel column and the bound radioactivity counted. The first sugar residue reacted within five days, and additional 2.7 residues reacted through the end of the …

Measurements Of Hydrocarbon, Phthalic Acid, And Phthalic Acid Ester Concentrations In Environmental Samples, Terry L. Wade Jan 1974

Measurements Of Hydrocarbon, Phthalic Acid, And Phthalic Acid Ester Concentrations In Environmental Samples, Terry L. Wade

Open Access Master's Theses

A method which allows the measurement of the concentration of hydrocarbons and phthalic acid or phthalic acid esters in a single sea water sample is described. The average hydrocarbon concentration for 36 sea surface microlayer samples, approximately the top 300 microns was 94 μg/l with a range of <4 to 559 μg/l. The hydrocarbon concentration for 36 subsurface samples, approximately 20 cm below the surface, averaged 51 μg/l, with a range of <2 to 248 μg/l. Comparisons of sample pairs, sea surface microlayer and subsurface from each station, reveal that 71% have greater hydrocarbon concentrations in the sea surface microlayer than in the subsurface.

The average phthalic acid concentration for 10 sea surface microlayer samples was 0.9 μg/l (range of 0.1 to 3.2 μg/l), while the average value for 7 subsurface samples was 0.4 μg/l (range of <0.1 to 1.0 μg/l). The average di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) concentration for 3 sea surface microlayer samples was 4.0 μg/l (range for 3.2 to 4.6 μg/l) and the average concentration for 3 subsurface samples was 1.3 μg/l (range of 0.7 to 2.5 μg/l). All but one of the samples measured for phthalic acid and DEHP had greater concentrations in the sea surface microlayer than in the subsurface.

Pelagic tar was found to be a possible sources of petroleum hydrocarbons found in the Sargasso Sea waters. This …

Two experiments studied durability of secondary reinforcement as a function of manipulations in the training (Experiment I), and training and testing situations (Experiment II). In Experiment I, a total of 40 rats were trained on a single or four different tasks over four consecutive days. Rats received 120 pairings of white noise and food in either a simultaneous or backward conditioning procedure. Testing occurred on a new learning task (lever box) one wee following was consequated with white noise, the other having no consequence, were present during testing. The results showed that the simultaneous conditioning procedure was an efficient method …

Residual Fear Of The Cs As A Function Of Response Prevention After Avoidance Or Classical-Defensive Conditioning In The Rat, Peter M. Monti Jan 1974

Residual Fear Of The Cs As A Function Of Response Prevention After Avoidance Or Classical-Defensive Conditioning In The Rat, Peter M. Monti

Open Access Dissertations

The problems of assessing fear reduction after response prevention techniques were reviewed. After surveying the literature it was apparent that whether or not response prevention actually reduced a subject's fear to the CS was still an unanswered question. The present investigation attempted to measure fear to the CS after response prevention by employing a conditioned emotional response paradigm. The first major hypothesis was that fear of an auditory CS (conditioned in an avoidance paradigm) is reduced during response prevention. Another hypothesis considered the possibility that conditioning may occur to aspects of the conditioning environment seas well as to the specific …
