Maritime Environment: A Systems Approach, Peter A. Roche
Maritime Environment: A Systems Approach, Peter A. Roche
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Some maritime activities may be independent of each other but most are in competition and some are supportive in one way or other with most other maritime activities. Fisheries and merchant vessels rarely are at odds over matters of ocean traffic. However, both those activities may object to obstructions related to offshore oil drilling. Both municipalities and fisheries complain of merchant vessel pollution. Companies of different, states compete for offshoreoil lease rights. On the other hand, synergy and sublimation sometimes result from interworkings of maritime activities. Complexes of offshore platforms increase fish congregations. Powerplant cooling ponds transmute thermal pollution into …

Fear Reduction Following Response Prevention In The Rat, Donald P. Corriveau
Fear Reduction Following Response Prevention In The Rat, Donald P. Corriveau
Open Access Master's Theses
The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether response prevention leads to fear reduction as assessed by approach measures, and to examine the role of safety testing behavior following response prevention. The subjects were 120 experimentally naive male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain. The apparatus consisted of a one-way platform avoidance chamber. The procedure included avoidance training, response blocking, and fear testing phases. The experiment represented a three by four factorial design. Eighty avoidance trained subjects were assigned to blocked or non-blocked conditions. The remaining control subjects were never shocked. Ten subjects from each of these treatment conditions were …
Delineation Of Coastal Zone Management Units Using Ecological And Legal Criteria: The Caseof Atlantic Canada, Henry Paul Anderson
Delineation Of Coastal Zone Management Units Using Ecological And Legal Criteria: The Caseof Atlantic Canada, Henry Paul Anderson
Open Access Master's Theses
The coastal zone is an area that has inspired man to some of his loftiest achievements and has provided an environment suited to many uses. Unfortunately, the growing pace and scale of development have created irrevocable disturbances of a natural environment important to the welfare of man. Environmental management is presented as the action essential to secure future benefits by reducing and preventing harmful effects of utilization. Water was chosen as the focus of the management program because of the role it plays in the coastal zone, its past history of management, and its interdependency with adjacent land uses from …
South American Backstrap Loom: Its Potential, Limitation And Application For Contemporary Handweaving, Rosa Will Abboud
South American Backstrap Loom: Its Potential, Limitation And Application For Contemporary Handweaving, Rosa Will Abboud
Open Access Master's Theses
Backstrap-loom-weaving appeals to the contemporary artist. Simple in equipment, highly flexible in use, it offers possibilities for rendering designs that are only limited to the ingenuity of the artist .
The loom, currently used in various forms by primitive people, was the major weaving tool of the pre-Columbian Peruvians, who excelled in the textile arts and are praised for their extreme skills, and wide range of practiced techniques. Research, however, indicated that the loom might not permit all varieties of weave structures and weaving techniques.
The researcher, therefore, attempted to identify the limitations and potentials of the loom (1) by …

The Role Of The Categories In Augustine’S Formulation And Defense Of The Trinity, James Davis Elkin
The Role Of The Categories In Augustine’S Formulation And Defense Of The Trinity, James Davis Elkin
Open Access Master's Theses
In De Trinitate Augustine of Hippo (354-430) gave his most complete analysis of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. The most crucial part of his logical analysis, Books V-VIII, shows Augustine attempting to handle the seeming logical dilemma of one God, yet Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. At the outset of his investigation, Augustine apparently had two concepts in mind. First, he accepted the Bible as authoritative; and obviously he accepted the idea that this authoritative Bible taught that Go was one, and yet also three in some way. Also, Augustine worked from the contemporary understanding of Aristotle’s categories in …
Pharmacological Evaluation Of An Asterosaponin Extract From Asterias Forbesi (Desor), Leslie Alan Goldsmith
Pharmacological Evaluation Of An Asterosaponin Extract From Asterias Forbesi (Desor), Leslie Alan Goldsmith
Open Access Master's Theses
An asterosaponin extracted £rom. the Atlantic starfish Asterias forbesi (Desor) has been evaluated for pharmacological activity. The investigation has revealed that while the asterosaponin does not exhibit all the activities that would be expected, such as hemotoxicity to blood cells, cholinergic blocking activity, initiation of avoidance response reaction or production of autotomy, it does exhibit some unique properties not demonstrated by other asterosaponins. These activities include analgesia, anti-inflammation, and transient hypotension produced by a direct effect on the vascular bed. The bovine serum albumin assay for anti-inflammatory activity showed that a concentration of 500 μg/ml of asterosaponin caused an 85% …
