Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Pseudomonas aeruginosa AC869, a 3,5-dichlorobenzoate degrader, is a mouse pathogen and has a reported 50% lethal dose (LD50) of 1.05 x 107 CFU when given intranasally to C3H/HeJ mice (S. E. George, M. J. Kohan, M. I. Gilmour, M. S. Taylor, H. G. Brooks, J. P. Creason, and L. D. Claxton, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 59:3585– 3591, 1993). AC869 was serotyped as O6 when grown in CD-1 mouse cecal and lung mucus but could not be assigned an O serotype when grown in Luria broth (LB). After growth in mouse cecal mucus, a less virulent mutant, AC869 11, …

Evidence For Cholinergic Inhibitory And Serotonergic Excitatory Neuromuscular Transmission In The Heart Of The Bivalve Mercenaria Mercenaria, Kiyoaki Kuwasawa, Robert A. Hill Jan 1997

Evidence For Cholinergic Inhibitory And Serotonergic Excitatory Neuromuscular Transmission In The Heart Of The Bivalve Mercenaria Mercenaria, Kiyoaki Kuwasawa, Robert A. Hill

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The heart of Mercenaria mercenaria is innervated bilaterally at the atria. A pair of cardiac nerves arise as a branch of the cerebro-visceral connective and run to the posterior end of the junction between each atrium and its efferent branchial vessel. Innervation evidently spreads over the heart, since both inhibitory and excitatory junctional potentials (IJPs and EJPs) can be recorded from the atria, the atrio-ventricular (AV) valve or the ventricle.

The cardiac nerves contain inhibitory and excitatory axons. Neural stimulation can cause increases in the frequency or amplitude of beating, depending on the strength and frequency of stimulation. Electrical stimulation …

Growth Of Vibrio Anguillarum In Salmon Intestinal Mucus, T. Garcia, K. Otto, S. Kjelleberg, David R. Nelson Jan 1997

Growth Of Vibrio Anguillarum In Salmon Intestinal Mucus, T. Garcia, K. Otto, S. Kjelleberg, David R. Nelson

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The physiological changes of Vibrio anguillarum in response to growth in salmon intestinal mucus were investigated. Growth, survival, and changes in protein expression during growth in media supplemented with mucus were compared to growth and starvation in the identical media without mucus. V. anguillarum exhibited a rapid decline in CFU following growth in mucus as the sole carbon source. No such decline was observed in Luria broth with a 2% NaCl concentration, in glucose-minimal broth (3M), or during starvation in a carbon-, nitrogen-, and phosphorus-free salt solution (NSS). The changes in protein expression during growth in mucus were examined by …

Hydrogeology Of The Matunuck Hills Ponds South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Roberto Esquilin Jan 1997

Hydrogeology Of The Matunuck Hills Ponds South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Roberto Esquilin

Open Access Master's Theses

A detailed hydrogeological study has been applied to a series of adjacent ponds in the vicinity of the Matunuck Hills, South Kingstown, for a period of two and a half years. This study combined physical and chemical concepts in order to evaluate the surface-water/ground-water interactions, and to interpret the hydrogeologic system of the Matunuck Hills Ponds. Three different types of indicators were specifically used to assess the hydrology of the ponds: potentiometric technique, water budget calculations, and chemical analysis.

The potentiometric technique helps in determining the hydraulic gradient and evaluating the spatial distribution of recharge or discharge around the ponds. …

Strategies For Life In Flow: Tenacity, Morphometry, And Probability Of Dislodgment Of Two Mytilus Species, Emily C. Bell, John M. Gosline Jan 1997

Strategies For Life In Flow: Tenacity, Morphometry, And Probability Of Dislodgment Of Two Mytilus Species, Emily C. Bell, John M. Gosline

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The attachment strength of sessile intertidal organisms is continuously challenged by the hydrodynamic forces generated by breaking waves. This study explores mechanisms by which the attachment strength, or tenacity, can vary for one of the dominant competitors for space in this environment, the marine mussel. Tenacity was measured for 2 co-existing mussel species, Mytilus californianus and Mytilus trossulus, either solitary or within a bed (= bed mussels). The tenacity of M. californianus was higher than M. trossulus, due to increased byssal thread thickness, and the tenacity of solitary mussels was higher than bed mussels, due to the presence …

Development Of A Muslim Religiosity Scale, Abdulaziz Abdurrahman Albelaikhi Jan 1997

Development Of A Muslim Religiosity Scale, Abdulaziz Abdurrahman Albelaikhi

Open Access Dissertations

The main focus of the study was the construction of a new scale for measuring religiosity among Muslims. Two other existing scales were also used. Utilizing 169 (108 male, 61 female) Saudi Arabian Muslim college students, an exploratory Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was employed on a set of questionnaire items intended to measure Islamic religiosity. Six components were extracted, which represented the religious dimensions of practice, societal value of religion, belief in central tenets, personal need for religion, reliance on practical guidance, and unquestioning acceptance.

Predictions regarding multidimensionality of Muslim religiosity were generally supported. However, the PCA-based scales developed in …

Investigations Into The Causes Of Early Larval Mortality In Cultured Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus L.), David Alves Jan 1997

Investigations Into The Causes Of Early Larval Mortality In Cultured Summer Flounder (Paralichthys Dentatus L.), David Alves

Open Access Master's Theses

Experiments were conducted to investigate larval mortality in cultured summer flounder during the first two weeks after hatch. The importance of feeding success, parentage, addition of algae, water quality, and the microbial community to mortality during this period were investigated. Larvae were raised in 2-L bowls at initial densities of 50 and 75/L with light aeration, 12L:12D photoperiod, and regular 1-L water changes. In all experiments mortalities were recorded and removed daily. In the first two experiments daily samples of larvae were taken to assess feeding success and to relate that to survival. The second experiment investigated the effects of …

Initiating Coastal Management In Kenya And Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Strategic Approach, Mark Amaral Jan 1997

Initiating Coastal Management In Kenya And Zanzibar, Tanzania: A Strategic Approach, Mark Amaral

Open Access Master's Theses

Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) is a process that unites government and the community, science and management, sectoral and pubic interests to wisely protect and develop coastal ecosystems and resources. As funding for ICM continues to increase, investments are often made quickly, without adequate consultation with the stakeholders and host institutions. This can lead to programs and projects that lack focus and outstrip the host institution's capacity and capabilities. By thinking strategically about the current coastal management problems and pressures and developing a strategy document using an organized and strategic process, investment can be made wisely and at a scale that …

A Strategic Recycling Plan For U.R.I, Amrita Roy

Open Access Master's Theses

Statement of Problem: Inadequate planning coupled with non-mandatory recycling practices has lead to a low recycling response at the University of Rhode Island. The student, staff and faculty suffer from lack of awareness of the appropriate recycling procedures. Compared to successful recycling initiatives in schools all over the country, URI falls low on the scale. In June 1989, URI started a campaign to implement campus wide recycling. The goal was to achieve 12% recovery rates (this is percentage of amount of materials by weightage that recycled out of the total waste stream) by 1993. It is unfortunate that in the …

Public Playgrounds: An Examination Of Current Issues Associated With Public Play Facilities, Albert V. Ranaldi Jr.

Open Access Master's Theses

The issues surrounding playgrounds are in need of attention. This research paper attempts to address the safety and developmental concerns regarding playground equipment and design. Since the most immediate concern is safety, the discussion will focus on issues concerning playground safety. A brief history of playground development, developmental theories of play, and safety issues will be presented. Discussion of these issues will lead to recommendations for a mandatory public playground safety policy and program. The standards for the safety policy and program will be adopted from the 1991 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's Handbook For Public Playground Safety, the 1993 …

Improving Open-Space Subdivisions In Charlton, Massachusetts: Connecting Back To The Land, Bruce E. Keller Jan 1997

Improving Open-Space Subdivisions In Charlton, Massachusetts: Connecting Back To The Land, Bruce E. Keller

Open Access Master's Theses

In Charlton, Massachusetts, the current open-space subdivision option doesn't work well for the benefit of people or wildlife, but rather allows the developer to cut costs without giving a more beneficial design in return. Open space "islands" are being created that have no connectivity with one another, making them little more than buffers of undisturbed land within and among developments. While these buffers are somewhat useful from an aesthetic perspective, better regulations and design guidelines would be helpful in creating more useable "corridors" for wildlife and trails for people, which in return will help to preserve wildlife biodiversity and provide …

Distribution Of Quahog Larvae Along A North-South Transect In Narragansett Bay, Nurlisa A. Butet

Open Access Master's Theses

A study on the distribution of quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria (Linnaeus 1758)) larvae in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island was conducted during a single summer season in 1995. Samples of the larvae were collected weekly using an electric bilge pump and a 60 um mesh plankton net at two depths (0.3 m and 1.6m) at five sampling stations distributed landward along the West shore, 12.6 kmto 30.6 km from Rhode Island Sound. Three stations were located in the upper estuary, i.e., Upper Bay, and two stations were in the lower estuary, i.e., UpperWest Passage.

The temporal distribution of quahog larvae was …

Waves Of Change: Women, Work, War, And Wedlock In Colonial Newport, Rhode Island, 1750-1775, Jonathan M. Beagle Jan 1997

Waves Of Change: Women, Work, War, And Wedlock In Colonial Newport, Rhode Island, 1750-1775, Jonathan M. Beagle

Open Access Master's Theses

The intent of this thesis is to explore connections between gender relations and the construction of a local discourse by which residents of late colonial Newport, Rhode Island, interpreted the coming American Revolution. Historians in recent years have documented a relationship between gender and the rhetoric of the Revolution and separately have linked the development of commercial economies to a desire for independence in the colonies. However, relatively unexplored are the possible connections between the nature of gender relations within the emergent economies and the appeal for independence.

The emergence of an urban economy in Newport dominated by commerce and …

The U.S. National Marine Sanctuary Program: Effectiveness Of Diver Education In The Florida Keys, Rebekah Resnick Padgett Jan 1997

The U.S. National Marine Sanctuary Program: Effectiveness Of Diver Education In The Florida Keys, Rebekah Resnick Padgett

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis examines the educational program of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), and its effectiveness for divers and snorkelers. It was hypothesized that intended educational messages were not reaching divers and snorkelers at the sanctuary. Between late December 1996 and early January 1997, 194 surveys were conducted in person in the Key Largo region. Data was collected regarding the demographics of the divers and snorkelers and their purposes for coming to dive in the Keys. In particular, information was accumulated regarding whether they learned anything about the marine environment of the Florida Keys, what they learned, and how …

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The ability of naturally infected and cured mice to resist reinfection with tick-transmitted Borrelia burgdorferi was tested over a 1-year period. All of the mice were resistant to reinfection when they were challenged at 1.5 months after cure. The majority of animals were resistant to reinfection for up to 10.5 months after cure, but this resistance was lost at 1 year after cure. Both protected and unprotected animals showed a diverse array of antibodies on Western immunoblots. Protection was not associated with the killing of spirochetes in ticks, and naturally infected mice produced no antibodies to outer surface protein A …

Indicated Silences In American Novels, Catherine Adamowicz Jan 1997

Indicated Silences In American Novels, Catherine Adamowicz

Open Access Dissertations

Studies have tended to focus on implied, not indicated, silences and/or to define the silence as the opposite and inferior condition of speech, reproducing and reinforcing the man/woman hierarchical binary.

This study, defining silence as the complement of speech, analyzes the significant of silences indicated by words and/or punctuation. Its purpose is to illustrate that the author's uses of silence reflect her subject position during a particular historical moment, that trends in uses evolve gradually, and that their direction can be predicted. The principle novels and authors used as examples are At Fault and The Awakening by Kate Chopin, …

Training Caregivers To Intervene In The Exploratory Play Of Young Children With Developmental Delays, Susan L. Curley Jan 1997

Training Caregivers To Intervene In The Exploratory Play Of Young Children With Developmental Delays, Susan L. Curley

Open Access Dissertations

Play, particularly exploratory play, can be viewed as the arena in which a series of interactions between a child and the environment occur. However, children with developmental delays appear to be less able to fully engage in exploratory play and utilize the environmental information that such play provides (Krakow & Kopp, 1983). There is also preliminary evidence that caregivers can be trained to use behaviors that facilitate exploratory play when engaged with their children (Belsky, Goode, & Most, 1981). The purpose of the present study was to explore the potential of training caregivers to facilitate the exploratory play of developmentally …
