Interactive Multireslution Curve Editing Using, Stephen P. Alberg Jan 1999

Interactive Multireslution Curve Editing Using, Stephen P. Alberg

Open Access Master's Theses

Precise curve fitting is an important feature of many computer applications, from statistical analysis cools, co the editors used by font and graphic designers, co the sophisticated computer-aided design/manufacturing environments developed for engineering systems. B-splines are the most widely used curve forms in such applications; composed of piecewise parametric cubic segments, they are notable for their compact representation, computational efficiency and, in particular, the high degree of continuity they enforce between successive curve segments. Such continuity, however, inhibits the freedom with which local, finer resolution editing may be performed on these curves. Refinement is most directly accomplished by inserting knots …

How Subject Characteristics Influence Attention Task Performance: A Structural Modeling Approach, Kristen A. Mckiernan Jan 1999

How Subject Characteristics Influence Attention Task Performance: A Structural Modeling Approach, Kristen A. Mckiernan

Open Access Dissertations

This research project presented and tested a theoretical model of auditory sustained attention. The model includes the personal, or subject characteristics that are believed to influence a person's ability to sustain attention. These characteristics are positive affect, negative affect, motivation, arousal, and concentration. Auditory sustained attention is represented by performance on a computerized continuous performance test (CPT); the CPT is widely used in both research and clinical settings. Three hundred and eleven participants were recruited for this study. Data from 286 of them were included in these analyses. All participants received some form of course credit for their participation. The …

The Application Of The Population Approach To Pharmacokinetics In Drug Development, Kimberley Anne Jackson Jan 1999

The Application Of The Population Approach To Pharmacokinetics In Drug Development, Kimberley Anne Jackson

Open Access Dissertations

The population approach to pharmacokinetic involves the estimation of mean pharmacokinetic parameters and their variability within a study population. Advantages of this approach include the ability to i) utilize sparse data, ii) analyze data from large, heterogeneous populations to obtain realistic and relevant estimates of variability and iii) evaluate the influence of patient characteristics on pharmacokinetic estimation.

Sparse data from a phase ill clinical trial of the protease inhibitor, nelfinavir, were used to obtain estimates of the pharmacokinetic parameters and their variability. The effects of patient covariates on the pharmacokinetic parameters of nelfinavir were evaluated. Clearance, estimated from data in …

Toni Morrison: Rethinking The Past In A Postcolonial Context, Hanan Abdullatif Jan 1999

Toni Morrison: Rethinking The Past In A Postcolonial Context, Hanan Abdullatif

Open Access Dissertations

Recovering submerged histories is instrumental in counteracting colonial cultural hegemony and its persistent attempts to erase the past that subject peoples had prior to the epoch of colonial rule. In Toni Morrison's novels reclaiming the past is a necessary condition of subjectivity since it restores a voice and history to those who were deprived of the awareness of both. In other words, it is a restoration of subjectivity. In a postcolonial context, reclaiming the past means more than a linear or literal recording of historical facts. Rather the process of redeeming a past requires that victims of oppression recover their …

Flight Of The Vampire: Ontogenetic Gait-Transition In Vampyroteuthis Infernalis (Cephalopoda: Vampyromorpha), Brad A. Seibel, Erik V. Thuesen, James J. Childress

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Vampyroteuthis infernalis is a cosmopolitan cephalopod that lives in the oxygen minimum layer between 600 and 800 m depth. Morphometric and physiological studies have indicated that V. infernalis has little capacity for jet propulsion and has the lowest metabolic rate ever measured for a cephalopod. Because fin swimming is inherently more efficient than jet propulsion, some of the reduction in energy usage relative to other cephalopods may result from the use of fins as the primary means of propulsion. V. infernalis undergoes a rapid metamorphosis which consists of changes in the position, size and shape of the fins. This …

Life At Stable Low Oxygen Levels: Adaptations Of Animals To Oceanic Oxygen Minimum Layers, James J. Childress, Brad A. Seibel Mar 1998

Life At Stable Low Oxygen Levels: Adaptations Of Animals To Oceanic Oxygen Minimum Layers, James J. Childress, Brad A. Seibel

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Zones of minimum oxygen level are found at intermediate depths in most of the world’s oceans and, although the oxygen partial pressure in some of these ‘oxygen minimum layers’ is only a fraction of a kilopascal, populations of pelagic metazoans exist there. These oxygen minimum layers are areas of the water column and the associated benthos with stable conditions of continuously low oxygen level and low temperature at intermediate depths (400–1000 m depth) over vast areas. Off California, where PO2at the oxygen minimum is 0.8 kPa, there are abundant populations of animals both in the water column …

Model-Based Approach To Envelope And Positive Instantaneous Frequency Estimation Of Signals With Speech Applications, Ramdas Kumaresan, Ashwin Rao Jan 1998

Model-Based Approach To Envelope And Positive Instantaneous Frequency Estimation Of Signals With Speech Applications, Ramdas Kumaresan, Ashwin Rao

Past Departments Faculty Publications (College of Engineering)

An analytic signal s(t) is modeled over a T second duration by a pole-zero model by considering its periodic extensions. This type of representation is analogous to that used in discrete-time systems theory, where the periodic frequency response of a system is characterized by a finite number of poles and zeros in the z-plane. Except, in this case, the poles and zeros are located in the complex-time plane. Using this signal model, expressions are derived for the envelope, phase, and the instantaneous frequency of the signal s(t). In the special case of an analytic signal having poles and zeros …

Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of The Hawaiian Hawk, Curtis R. Griffin, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas S. Baskett Jan 1998

Breeding Ecology And Behavior Of The Hawaiian Hawk, Curtis R. Griffin, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas S. Baskett

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We studied the ecology of the endangered Hawaiian Hawk (Buteo solitarius) on the island of Hawaii for three breeding seasons. Their breeding strategy is a prime example of a K-selected species characteristic of many birds in tropical environments: clutch size was one and brood-rearing was among the longest reported for any diurnal raptor. Twenty-eight nests were found in a variety of native and exotic habitats. Incubation lasted 38 days, nestlings fledged after 59-63 days, and parents cared for fledglings for an average of 30.2 weeks, which was 2.5 to 10 times longer than similar-size temperate zone raptors. Males …
