Green-Water Rearing And Delayed Weaning Improve Growth And Survival Of Summer Flounder, David A. Bengtson, Lindsay Lydon, Jeffrey D. Ainley

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

The advent of an aquaculture industry for summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus requires that optimal methods be identified for hatchery production. Two experiments were conducted to test strategies for larval rearing and for weaning newly metamorphosed juveniles from live to artificial diets. Rearing of larvae in ‘‘green water’’ (with algae added) resulted in better survival (76.1 6 6.5%) from days 5–42 after hatching than did rearing in ‘‘clear water’’ (no algae added; 27.8 6 13.6%), although no differences in growth were apparent. When fish were weaned from live feed beginning at day 45 versus day 57 by either a ‘‘gradual’’ method …

Locomotion In Sturgeon: Function Of The Pectoral Fins, C. D. Wilga, G. V. Lauder Jan 1999

Locomotion In Sturgeon: Function Of The Pectoral Fins, C. D. Wilga, G. V. Lauder

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Pectoral fins are one of the major features of locomotor design in ray-finned fishes and exhibit a well-documented phylogenetic transition from basal to derived clades. In percomorph fishes, the pectoral fins are often used to generate propulsive force via oscillatory movements, and pectoral fin propulsion in this relatively derived clade has been analyzed extensively. However, in the plesiomorphic pectoral fin condition, exemplified by sturgeon, pectoral fins extend laterally from the body in a generally horizontal orientation, have been assumed to generate lift to balance lift forces and moments produced by the heterocercal tail, and are not oscillated to generate propulsive …

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The growth physiology of Escherichia coli during colonization of the intestinal tract was studied with four animal models: the streptomycin-treated mouse carrying a reduced microflora, the monoassociated mouse with no other microflora than the introduced strain, the conventionalized streptomycin-treated mouse, and the conventionalized monoassociated mouse harboring a full microflora. A 23S rRNA fluorescent oligonucleotide probe was used for hybridization to whole E. coli cells fixed directly after being taken from the animals, and the respective growth rates of E. coli BJ4 in the four animal models were estimated by correlating the cellular concentrations of ribosomes with the growth rate of …

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger Jan 1999

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger

Open Access Master's Theses

The Cretan wild goat (Capra aegagrus cretensis Lydekker) or agrimi is the last existing sub-species of free ranging bezoar goat (C. a. aegagrus) in Europe. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Protection of this animal is very important to the people of Greece and Crete due to the agrimi' s historic cultural importance. To examine genetic variation within and among wild and domestic goats (C. hircus), 6 polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to compare the genetic structure of 5 …

Consumption Rates Of Summer Flounder Larvae On Rotifer And Brine Shrimp Prey During Larval Rearing, David A. Bengtson, Timothy R. Gleason, Mohamad A. Hossain

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Larval summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus were hatched and reared through metamorphosis in the laboratory. At several points in the rearing cycle, larvae were removed from their rearing chambers and placed in small bowls, where they were fed known quantities of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis (flounder larvae age 6, 10, or 13 d posthatch) or nauplii of brine shrimp Artemia sp. (flounder larvae age 23, 28, 34, or 47 d posthatch). Counts of prey organisms remaining in the bowls after 24 h allowed us to calculate numbers of prey consumed. Consumption rates increased from 62 rotifers/24 h (6-d larvae) to 301 …

Copepod Grazing Selection And Particle Discrimination On The Basis Of Psp Toxin Content, Gregory J. Teegarden Jan 1999

Copepod Grazing Selection And Particle Discrimination On The Basis Of Psp Toxin Content, Gregory J. Teegarden

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Omnivorous copepods are capable of discriminatory feeding using mechano- and chemosensory mechanisms. The presence of phycotoxins in phytoplankton often results in reduced consumption of such potential prey by copepods, though it has not been clear if this is the result of discriminatory feeding by either tactile (mechanosensory) or chemosensory recognition of toxic prey, or perhaps a physiological response to ingested neurotoxic compounds. In this study, experiments were performed to determine whether 3 species of marine copepods (Acartia tonsa, Centropages hamatus, and Eurytemora herdmani) that commonly co-occur with toxic Alexandrium spp. dinoflagellates were capable of discriminating between cultured Alexandrium spp. strains …

Testing Separability Of Japanese Demand For Meat And Fish Within Differential Demandsystems, James Eales, Cathy R. Wessells Jan 1999

Testing Separability Of Japanese Demand For Meat And Fish Within Differential Demandsystems, James Eales, Cathy R. Wessells

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications

The separability of meat products from fish products is investigated to gain a better understanding of Japanese consumer choices in protein demand. Rather than view fish as a single homogeneous commodity, fish and seafood are categorized into several groups of products. Separability is investigated using a demand system approach in which a generalized system of demand equations is specified and used, first to identify if any of the alternative demand structures nested within the general system are appropriate for these data, and then, conditional on those results, to test separability of meats from fish products following Moschini, Moro, and Green. …

An epizootic causing mortality among cultured summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus occurred in summer of 1998 at a land-based facility on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. The disease, flounder infectious necrotizing enteritis (FINE), was characterized by reddening around the anal area, distended abdomens filled with opaque serosanguineous fluid, enteritis and necrosis of the posterior intestine. In extreme cases of the disease, the posterior intestine was detached from the anus and was observed coming out the vent. The intestine of individuals that recovered from the dsease ended in a blind-sac; the abdomens of these fish were distended, due to food and water …

The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplement On Liver Mitochondrial Profiles In Mice, Karen Ann Agostinucci Jan 1999

The Effect Of Vitamin E Supplement On Liver Mitochondrial Profiles In Mice, Karen Ann Agostinucci

Open Access Master's Theses

Cell oxidative damage caused by free radical production during respiration plays a major role in tissue dysfunction. Mitochondria are subcellular sites for oxidative phosphorylation and are the major source of free radicals. Their high oxidative activity makes them susceptible to oxidative damage. Antioxidants protect the cell against oxidative damage, but when defenses are not adequate cells are subjected to oxidative stress. A lack of vitamin E, and selenium results in enlargement ofliver mitochondria, suggesting mitochondrial fusion, and an inability to divide. Recent studies suggest that aging is associated with mitochondrial enlargement and elongation, and that these mitochondria are less oxidatively …

The Foundation Of Radical Ecological Philosophy In Karl Marx’S View Of Nature, Elizabeth Marsis Jan 1999

The Foundation Of Radical Ecological Philosophy In Karl Marx’S View Of Nature, Elizabeth Marsis

Open Access Master's Theses

The three main non-traditional schools of environmental philosophy - social ecology, feminism and deep ecology - contain divergent views of and claims regarding the universalization of their particular world views. One example of this divergence of views concerns the status of human/non-human relationships. Like many other contemporary non-traditional liberation movements and theories, these three environmental movements and schools of thought have been influenced by the theories of Karl Marx.

Therefore, in order to clarify and understand the way in which, and the extent to which, key proponents of each of these environmental movements and philosophies universalize their particular philosophic world …

Between Two Faiths: The Arabization Of The Knights Templar During The Crusades, Paula Regina Stiles Jan 1999

Between Two Faiths: The Arabization Of The Knights Templar During The Crusades, Paula Regina Stiles

Open Access Master's Theses

The military orders , especially the first, the Order of the Poor Knights of the Temple of Solomon (Knights Templar) played a critical role in the preservation of the Crusader kingdoms in Palestine between 1119 and their fall in 1291. It is generally acknowledged that part of the Templars' success, in both Palestine and Spain, stemmed from their ability to deal with the Muslim enemy in a variety of situations. This naturally involved some assimilation of the Templars into the local culture during the 12th and 13th centuries.

This thesis explores the nature of that assimilation (either arabization or islamization), …
