Evolution Of Upper Jaw Protrusion Mechanisms In Elasmobranchs, Cheryl Wilga, Robert E. Hueter, Peter C. Wainwright, Philip J. Motta Jan 2001

Evolution Of Upper Jaw Protrusion Mechanisms In Elasmobranchs, Cheryl Wilga, Robert E. Hueter, Peter C. Wainwright, Philip J. Motta

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Upper jaw protrusion is a prominent component of the feeding mechanism in most elasmobranchs and has received considerable attention over the years. In this paper, we review what is known of muscle activity during prey capture in elasmobranchs, particularly that of upper jaw protrusion, and evaluate the extent to which functional modifications have evolved through changes in anatomy or patterns of muscle activity. To date, motor activity during feeding has been documented in only four species of elasmobranchs, although they represent the three major elasmobranch groups: Galea (typical sharks); Squalea (dogfish sharks); and Batoidea (skates and rays). Our efforts show …

Site Fidelity, Philopatry, And Survival Of Promiscuous Saltmarsh Sharp-Tailed Sparrows In Rhode Island, Deborah A. Diquinzio, Peter W. C. Paton, William R. Eddleman Jan 2001

Site Fidelity, Philopatry, And Survival Of Promiscuous Saltmarsh Sharp-Tailed Sparrows In Rhode Island, Deborah A. Diquinzio, Peter W. C. Paton, William R. Eddleman

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We investigated site fidelity and apparent survival in a promiscuous population of Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows (Ammodramus caudacutus) in southern Rhode Island. Based on capture–recapture histories of 446 color-banded sparrows studied from 1993 to 1998 at our primary study site, Galilee, we observed significant variation in apparent survival rates among years, but not between sexes. Return rates of adult males (37.6%) and females (35.6%) were not significantly different during any year. Juveniles exhibited high return rates, ranging from 0 to 44%, with males (61% of returns) more likely to return than females (35%). In addition, we monitored movements of …

Role Of Ca2+ In Excitation-Contraction Coupling In Echinoderm Muscle: Comparison With Role In Other Tissues, Robert B. Hill Jan 2001

Role Of Ca2+ In Excitation-Contraction Coupling In Echinoderm Muscle: Comparison With Role In Other Tissues, Robert B. Hill

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The longitudinal muscle of the body wall of Isostichopus badionotus may be considered a model for excitation-contraction coupling in echinoderm muscle. Other echinoderm muscles are reviewed by comparison with the model. Echinoderm muscle is also of interest as a model for ‘mutable collagenous tissue’; however, in that tissue, Ca2+ has been proposed to function both in living control systems and in regulation of non-living interstitial substance.

Heat Shock Proteins And Osmotic Shock In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), Feng Pan Jan 2001

Heat Shock Proteins And Osmotic Shock In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), Feng Pan

Open Access Dissertations

Heat shock proteins are molecular chaperones. Atlantic salmon is a major aquaculture species in the world, their anadromous nature made them encounter osmotic shock twice in the life cycle. Salmon prior treated with a mild thermal shock observed a significantly higher survival rate upon transfer to hyperosmotic seawater than control fish. Heat shock protein 70 was prominently induced and persisted up to 24 hours after initial heat shock. Fish with prior heat shock treatment exhibited significant higher rate of protein synthesis over control after transfer to seawater. Hsp90 is known to enhance the fidelity of glucocorticoid hormone and receptors. Northern …

Analysis Of A Proposed Model For Detection Of Magnetic Fields By Biological Systems, Su-Hsiu Wu Jan 2001

Analysis Of A Proposed Model For Detection Of Magnetic Fields By Biological Systems, Su-Hsiu Wu

Open Access Dissertations

Numerous reports have indicated that some biological effects of relatively weak alternating magnetic fields depend upon the presence and magnitude of a parallel-directed static magnetic field. One explanation of these phenomena is parametric resonance mechanism, originally proposed by Lednev and also applied in modified form by Blackman and Blanchard. The mechanism, as formulated by Lednev, involves the Zeeman splitting of infrared vibration levels of Ca2+ ions within proteins such as calmodulin. It is shown that this model can be formulated using mostly classical physics. In this formulation the linear vibration path of an oscillating ion is set into uniform rotation …

β-Glucuronidase Assay For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli In Foods, Seref Tagi Jan 2001

β-Glucuronidase Assay For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli In Foods, Seref Tagi

Open Access Dissertations

Enzyme assays were developed for the measurement of β-D-glucuronide (GUS) as a rapid detection method for E. coli in food. A fluorescent assay utilizing 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide as substrate was optimized and tested with growth cultures of E. coli. A relationship between E. coli and the level of GUS activity was established. A chemiluminescent assay using a 1,2-dioxetene derivative as substrate was compared to the fluorescent assay, and was found to be 10x more sensitive. Anti-E. coli GUS antibodies were covalently immobilized on magnetic beads and used in a 30 min immunocapture method. GUS was recovered from E. coli grown at 37°C …

Anoxia Tolerance And Recovery In Freshwater And Marine Turtles, Malia Lois Schwartz Jan 2001

Anoxia Tolerance And Recovery In Freshwater And Marine Turtles, Malia Lois Schwartz

Open Access Dissertations

Anoxia tolerance and recovery in freshwater and marine turtles were investigated. This study quantified several factors thought to influence anoxia tolerance and recovery, including body size, feeding history, season, the turtle's sex, and repetitive entrapment. In Chrysemys picta bellii, body size had little effect on anoxic metabolism, although small turtles regained normal behavior more rapidly and exhibited no lag in lactate clearance. Feeding history also had little effect on anoxia tolerance, but turtles that had recently fed recovered more slowly than fasted animals. There were no differences between the sexes in anoxia tolerance; however, females recovered faster behaviorally. The lack …

Aspects Of The Physiology Of Early Juvenile Cod (Gadus Morhua L.) And Haddock (Melanogrammus Aeglefinus L.), Myron Arms Peck Jan 2001

Aspects Of The Physiology Of Early Juvenile Cod (Gadus Morhua L.) And Haddock (Melanogrammus Aeglefinus L.), Myron Arms Peck

Open Access Dissertations

In this research, the effects of temperature, body size, and/or feeding level on a variety of bioenergetic parameters in early (age-0) juveniles of both Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus L.) were quantified. Bioenergetic parameters were measured at temperatures (5, 8, 12, and 15°C) experienced by field fish, using a range in fish sizes (3 to 13 cm TL) encompassing the first year of juvenile growth. In the first study, the relationship between cod and haddock growth rate (GI) and feeding-level (C) was quantified at different temperatures. The shape of the GI - C relationship and growth …

Computer Simulation Of Inspiratory Flow And Particle Deposition In Human Oral Airway, Xiaobo Zhu Jan 2001

Computer Simulation Of Inspiratory Flow And Particle Deposition In Human Oral Airway, Xiaobo Zhu

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation, the inspiratory air flow and aerosol deposition in the human oral airway are simulated using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package, CFX. The dissertation consists of two parts: In the first part, a three-dimensional curvilinear body-fitted grid system was developed based on the geometry of an anatomically accurate human oral airway. The respiratory tract consists of oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx and upper trachea. Velocity profiles and pressure fields at various inspiratory flow rates observed during aerosol medicine therapy were simulated. Both laminar and turbulent models were employed depending on the Reynolds number defined at the …

The Development Of A Measure Of Attention In Children, Janette Baird Jan 2001

The Development Of A Measure Of Attention In Children, Janette Baird

Open Access Master's Theses

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a Preschool Measure Of Attention (PMA) to measure three factors of attention in young children; focus, shift and vigilance. The parents of 148 children rated their children on the PMA, a measure of temperament and on a scale of attentional problems. The results of the study suggest that two factors of attention; vigilance and focus/distractibility, were measured in this group. Age differences in the performance of the sample on these attentional factors were not found to be significant. However the age of the children accounted for 5 percent of the variance …

Rapid changes to the town's character caused by residential growth have led to escalating …

Analysis Of Allelometric Behaviors And Social Organization In Domestic Sheep, Shole Cody Adams Jan 2001

Analysis Of Allelometric Behaviors And Social Organization In Domestic Sheep, Shole Cody Adams

Open Access Master's Theses

Although sheep are thought to be the first domesticated food animal, and have been around for thousands of years, little is known about their social structure. Knowing some of the behaviors exhibited by sheep has already helped shape modern animal husbandry. Becoming familiar with more of the vast array of social behaviors used by sheep could benefit animal husbandry even further. In the wild, sheep graze on large areas of land where there is little competition for food. However, some domesticated sheep spend very little time on open ranges and are often and are often forced to compete over condensed …

Inhibition Studies Of Protein Phosphatase 2a By Known Cathartic Plant Drugs, Michael Ford Jan 2001

Inhibition Studies Of Protein Phosphatase 2a By Known Cathartic Plant Drugs, Michael Ford

Open Access Master's Theses

Protein phosphatases play significant roles in signal transduction pathways that regulate cellular processes in response to external/internal stimuli. They are crucial for the growth, division, and differentiation of all organisms. Examples of cell functions involving reversible phosphorylation include ion transport, metabolism, cell cycle progression, developmental control, and stress responses. Serine/threoninespecific protein phosphatases are of particular interest in this study. There are two types of serine/threonine-specific protein phosphatases: type 1 & type 2. Both protein phosphatase 1 (PPl) and protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) are inhibited by a structurally diverse group of natural toxins produced by marine organisms that cause diarrhetic shellfish …
