On-Scene Predictors Of Injury Severity, Deterioration, And Death Following Road Injury: A Systematic Scoping Review Of Information Available To Responders And Its Use In Triage Tools, Jake Gluyas-Harris, George Stephen Russam, Nicholas Aveyard, Tim Nutbeam
Peninsula Medical School
Background: Road injury including motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) remain a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Early recognition of injury severity at the scene is critical to optimise emergency response, yet existing triage systems under- and over-triage substantial numbers of patients. This scoping review aimed to identify physiological, mechanistic, and contextual indicators available at the scene that predict injury severity, deterioration, or death, and to map these indicators across clinical responders, professional bystanders, and lay responders. Methods: We conducted a systematic scoping review in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Nine electronic databases and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception …

The Meaning Of Travel: An Exploration Within The ‘Baby-Boomer’ Generation, Regan Hicks, Alison Warren
The Meaning Of Travel: An Exploration Within The ‘Baby-Boomer’ Generation, Regan Hicks, Alison Warren
School of Health Professions
This qualitative research explored the underresearched area of subjective meaning(s) of travel for U.K. baby-boomers, from an occupational perspective. Using a descriptive phenomenology, a convenience sample of eight baby-boomers was recruited using social media. Participants took part in semistructured interviews, and narratives were analysed using thematic analysis. Four themes were generated: (a) travel is important to me, (b) travel changes through time, (c) travel facilitators and barriers and (d) travel as a shared experience. Participants perceived travel as a meaningful and health-promoting occupation that represented freedom, choice, independence, connection and achievement. Greater comfort was sought with age while financial constraints …

ObjectiveCOVID-19 vaccine surveillance detected thrombotic thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), a rare combination of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia, after COVID-19 vaccination. We evaluated TTS risk within 28 days of AZD1222 and BNT162b2 exposure.MethodsMatched case-control (MCCS) and self-controlled case series (SCCS) studies used Oxford-Royal College of General Practitioners Research and Surveillance Centre data linked to immunisation, hospitalisation and death data. English patient records extracted from 2/12/2020 to 31/10/2022 were used to identify TTS cases and age, sex, and practice matched controls. Conditional logistic regression and conditional Poisson regression were used for MCCS and SCCS analyses, respectively.ResultsOf 666 TTS events identified, >90% happened without AZD1222/BNT162b2 …
Artem-Is For Erp: Agreed Reporting Template For Eeg Methodology-International Standard For Event-Related Potential Experiments, Giorgio Ganis
Artem-Is For Erp: Agreed Reporting Template For Eeg Methodology-International Standard For Event-Related Potential Experiments, Giorgio Ganis
School of Psychology
The choices we make during the recording, preprocessing and analysis of event-related potentials (ERP) data can affect study outcomes. As such, it is critical that they are transparently reported to allow for reproducibility. Yet, systematic reviews of reporting practices in the field have shown that journal articles often do not meet this goal and that existing reporting guidelines have not resulted in a sufficient improvement in reporting transparency. An easier workflow for transparently documenting pipelines used in regular journal articles is needed. The ARTEM-IS (Agreed Reporting Template for EEG Methodology—International Standard) initiative is working towards addressing this issue by building …

School of Health Professions
BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common and debilitating symptom for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Evidence suggests that behavioral treatments, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy and some exercise therapies, are effective in reducing MS fatigue. However, few people are offered these treatments in routine care, and little is known about the reasons for this research-to-practice gap. The aim of this study was to explore how routine care is currently delivered for MS fatigue. METHODS: Health care professionals (n = 28) took part in 6 focus groups and 6 one-to-one interviews exploring experiences with assessing, managing, and treating fatigue. How health care professionals …
Nearshore Wind Estimation From Buoy Wave Spectra Via Physics-Guided Machine Learning: A Framework For Offshore Wind Applications, Jiaxin Chen, Martyn Hann, Robert Rawlinson-Smith, Munira Raji, Deborah Greaves
Nearshore Wind Estimation From Buoy Wave Spectra Via Physics-Guided Machine Learning: A Framework For Offshore Wind Applications, Jiaxin Chen, Martyn Hann, Robert Rawlinson-Smith, Munira Raji, Deborah Greaves
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Reliable real-time wind estimation in nearshore zones is critical for offshore wind energy development, especially in regions lacking direct meteorological observations. This study presents a physics-guided machine learning framework for estimating 10-m surface wind speed and direction from wave buoy spectra. The model incorporates frequency- and wavenumber-based energy parameters, directional Fourier coefficients, directional fetch, and normalised wave number–depth indicators to account for local wind–wave dynamics.Trained on six long-term buoy–mast station pairs along the UK southwest coast, the model outperforms two established empirical methods, reducing wind speed and direction RMSE by over 50%. Sensitivity analyses confirm the value of directional and …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Secure and effective methods of image encryption are increasingly important in protecting sensitivedigital content from being attacked by today's increasingly knowledgeable and aggressive adversaries. This is no exception to attacks carried out on the secret content generated by grayscale images.Stemming from this problem, this research introduces a new approach to encrypt grayscale images usinga combination of the Generalized Lucas Matrix and Hill Cipher (GLMHC) with a self-invertibleencryption key. This type of encryption key eliminates the need to find the inversion key during thedecryption process and reduces the computational burden. Encrypted image quality is measured usingentropy, Mean Two-Dimensional Error (MSE), Signal to …

Biodiversity Performance Of Living Wall Systems In Urban Environments: A Uk Case Study Of Plant Selection And Substrate Effects On Multi-Taxa Communities, Paul Henry Lunt, James Buckley, Suzanne Mitchell, Gabriel Thomas, Elek Churella, Thomas Richard Murphy
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Urban densification threatens biodiversity, yet conventional greenspace expansion is constrained by limited land availability. Living wall systems (LWS) offer potential biodiversity enhancement through vertical green infrastructure, though their ecological value remains underexplored. This study evaluated the biodiversity performance of three LWS in Plymouth, UK, using multi-taxa surveys to assess invertebrate communities, bird assemblages, and bat activity. A scoping review of 2638 publications revealed limited research on LWS biodiversity, with only 27% of biodiversity-focused papers referencing specific species. Field surveys employed standardised protocols including flower-visiting pollinator observations, spider assessments, soil invertebrate extraction using Tullgren funnels, acoustic bird monitoring, and bat emergence …
