Environmental Variables And Macroinvertebrate Community Structure In Drainage Ditches On The Somerset Levels, Carly Hoskin
Environmental Variables And Macroinvertebrate Community Structure In Drainage Ditches On The Somerset Levels, Carly Hoskin
The Plymouth Student Scientist
1. Studies of macroinvertebrate assemblages have tended to find relationships between environmental variables and the species present in the assemblage. Here, I looked at the relationship between assemblages and environmental variables in six drainage ditches in a small area of the Somerset Levels, UK. 2. I sampled aquatic macroinvertebrates and a range of environmental physicochemical variables from the six ditches, and investigated the differing relationships between the environmental variables and a range of assemblage datasets (overall assemblage, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Odonata, and Mollusca). 3. Environmental variables surveyed were relatively homogeneous, with the exception of calcium, conductivity and nitrate. Diversity, species richness, …

Cognitive Consequences Of Perceiving Social Exclusion, Na Wyer
Cognitive Consequences Of Perceiving Social Exclusion, Na Wyer
School of Psychology
Although a great deal is now known about how people mentally represent individuals and groups, less attention has been paid to the question of how interpersonal relationships are represented in memory. Drawing on principles of categorization, this paper reports an investigation into how we mentally represent the relationships of others. In three experiments, evidence for assimilation effects following social exclusion (and subsequent categorization) is found. Experiment 1 uses a judgment paradigm to demonstrate that social exclusion influences the perception of interpersonal closeness. Experiments 2 and 3 employ a memory confusion paradigm to establish that representations of relationship partners are assimilated …
Your Own Actions Influence How You Perceive Other People: A Misattribution Of Action Appraisals, Sp Tipper, P Bach
Your Own Actions Influence How You Perceive Other People: A Misattribution Of Action Appraisals, Sp Tipper, P Bach
School of Psychology
The attribution of personal traits to other persons depends on the actions the observer performs at the same time (Bach & Tipper, 2007). Here, we show that the effect reflects a misattribution of appraisals of the observers' own actions to the actions of others. We exploited spatial compatibility effects to manipulate how fluently-how fast and how accurately-participants identified two individuals performing sporty or academic actions. The traits attributed to each person in a subsequent rating task depended on the fluency of participants' responses in a specific manner. An individual more fluently identified while performing the academic action appeared more academic …

Energization-Dependent Endogenous Activation Of Proton Conductance In Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria., Nadeene Parker, Charles Affourtit, Antonio Vidal-Puig, Martin D. Brand
School of Biomedical Sciences
Leak of protons into the mitochondrial matrix during substrate oxidation partially uncouples electron transport from phosphorylation of ADP, but the functions and source of basal and inducible proton leak in vivo remain controversial. In the present study we describe an endogenous activation of proton conductance in mitochondria isolated from rat and mouse skeletal muscle following addition of respiratory substrate. This endogenous activation increased with time, required a high membrane potential and was diminished by high concentrations of serum albumin. Inhibition of this endogenous activation by GDP [classically considered specific for UCPs (uncoupling proteins)], carboxyatractylate and bongkrekate (considered specific for the …

The Perceived Impact Of Location Privacy: A Web-Based Survey Of Public Health Perspectives And Requirements In The Uk And Canada., Philip Abdelmalik, Maged N.Kamel Boulos, Ray Jones
School of Nursing and Midwifery
BACKGROUND: The "place-consciousness" of public health professionals is on the rise as spatial analyses and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are rapidly becoming key components of their toolbox. However, "place" is most useful at its most precise, granular scale - which increases identification risks, thereby clashing with privacy issues. This paper describes the views and requirements of public health professionals in Canada and the UK on privacy issues and spatial data, as collected through a web-based survey. METHODS: Perceptions on the impact of privacy were collected through a web-based survey administered between November 2006 and January 2007. The survey targeted government, …

Affection, Virtue, Pleasure, And Profit: Developing An Understanding Of Friendship Closeness And Intimacy In Western And Asian Societies, M Gummerum, M Keller
School of Psychology
The development of friendship understanding has rarely been explored from a cross-cultural perspective. In this study, children and adolescents from Iceland, China, Russia, and the former East Germany were investigated in one longitudinal and three cross-sectional samples. Children from three different Chinese ecologies were interviewed to account for within-culture variation. Participants were interviewed about friendship closeness and intimacy at ages 7, 9, 12, and 15 years. Their statements were scored according to (a) structural—developmental stages and (b) content aspects of friendship reasoning. Results reveal that the development of friendship reasoning of participants from all societies could be captured by the …

Surveillance Of Cirrhosis For Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Cost-Utility Analysis., Coon J Thompson, G. Rogers, P. Hewson, D. Wright, R. Anderson, S. Jackson, S. Ryder, M. Cramp, K. Stein
Peninsula Medical School
Using a decision-analytic model, we evaluated the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in individuals with cirrhosis. Separate cohorts with cirrhosis due to alcoholic liver disease, hepatitis B and hepatitis C were simulated. Results were also combined to approximate a mixed aetiology population. Comparisons were made between a variety of surveillance algorithms using alpha-foetoprotein (AFP) assay and/or ultrasound at 6- and 12-monthly intervals. Parameter estimates were obtained from comprehensive literature reviews. Uncertainty was explored using one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. In the mixed aetiology cohort, 6-monthly AFP+ultrasound was predicted to be the most effective strategy. The model …

Collective Memory And Blood Feud: The Case Of Mountainous Crete, Aris Tsantiropoulos
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
Drawing upon ethnographic data from mountainous central Crete, a feuding society up to the present moment, this article will focus on cases of retaliatory crimes where men avenge a relative who was killed before they were born. In these cases, what is interesting is that there do not seem to be any factors in the present to fuel the fire of a past animosity between the two kinship groups. Instead, these men seek revenge looking either for the murderer himself or for one of his male relatives in the places where they were forced to emigrate after the commitment of …

The Next Stage Of Devolution? A (D)Evolving Criminal Justice System For Wales, Jackie Jones
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
The coalition government in Wales has committed itself to seriously consider devolving the criminal justice system for Wales. It is seen as the next possible step in the devolution process. To some extent many of the structures for a devolved criminal justice system are already being put in place to support devolved policy making and provision of criminal justice services in Wales. However, the One Wales agreement proposes to place the most emphasis on a devolved criminal justice system on youth justice and the prevention of reoffending. This is problematic in a number of ways explored in the paper, not …

Australia And The War Against Terrorism: Terrorism, National Security And Human Rights, Mark Rix
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article considers whether in the 'war against terrorism' national security is eroded or strengthened by weakening or removing the human rights of the individuals who constitute the polity. It starts with the view that national security is, at its most fundamental, founded upon the security and liberty of the person from criminal and violent acts, including terrorist attacks. Such attacks, and the individuals and groups who perpetrate them, constitute a grave threat to the peace and security of nations the world over and thus endanger the security and liberty of the individuals who make up their populations. Governments are …

Beyond The Limits Of Clinical Governance? The Case Of Mental Health In English Primary Care, Linda Gask, Anne Rogers, Stephen Campbell, Rod Sheaff
Peninsula Medical School
Background: Little research attention has been given to attempts to implement organisational initiatives to improve quality of care for mental health care, where there is a high level of indeterminacy and clinical judgements are often contestable. This paper explores recent efforts made at an organisational level in England to improve the quality of primary care for people with mental health problems through the new institutional processes of 'clinical governance'. Methods: Framework analysis, based on the Normalisation Process Model (NPM), of attempts over a five year period to develop clinical governance for primary mental health services in Primary Care Trusts (PCTs). …

Improving Student Support In Professional Placement Learning: Findings From The South West Peninsula Pilot Of A New English National Placement Quality Assurance And Enhancement Process., Gr Williamson, V Heath, L Ballantyne, L Callaghan, D Webster, C Hunter
School of Nursing and Midwifery
English stakeholder collaboration has resulted in a new quality assurance process for non-medical health and social care placement providers and higher education institutions. This study aimed to discover the impact on student support that taking part in a pilot had on participating placement areas. Using a questionnaire survey with longitudinal follow-up one year later, we found that placement staff valued the opportunity to review and improve student support practices. This was still in evidence a year later where the pilot was described as giving the opportunity to provide evidence of aspects of student support practice; communicating and changing or developing …

The Regulation Of Sirt2 Function By Cyclin-Dependent Kinases Affects Cell Motility, R Pandithage, R Lilischkis, K Harting, A Wolf, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) fulfill key functions in many cellular processes, including cell cycle progression and cytoskeletal dynamics. A limited number of Cdk substrates have been identified with few demonstrated to be regulated by Cdk-dependent phosphorylation. We identify on protein expression arrays novel cyclin E–Cdk2 substrates, including SIRT2, a member of the Sirtuin family of NAD+-dependent deacetylases that targets a-tubulin. We define Ser-331 as the site phosphorylated by cyclin E–Cdk2, cyclin A–Cdk2, and p35–Cdk5 both in vitro and in cells. Importantly, phosphorylation at Ser-331 inhibits the catalytic activity of SIRT2. Gain- and loss-of-function studies demonstrate that SIRT2 interfered with cell adhesion …
The Effectiveness Of A Nationwide Intervention Programme To Prevent And Counter School Bullying In Ireland, Sj Minton, Am O'Moore
The Effectiveness Of A Nationwide Intervention Programme To Prevent And Counter School Bullying In Ireland, Sj Minton, Am O'Moore
School of Psychology
The purpose of this paper is to set out what is known about (large-scale empirical research) and what has been done about (large-scale whole-school intervention programmes) bullying behaviour in Irish schools, with a view to indicating likely future developments in Irish anti-bullying action. Results from a 1993 nationwide representative survey of bullying behaviour in schools (O'Moore, Kirkham & Smith, 1997) are compared with those of a hitherto unpublished survey from 2004-2005 (the 'ABC' survey). Essentially, whilst the proportion of primary students involved in bully/victim problems was lower in the 'ABC' survey (35.3%) than it was in the 1993 nationwide survey …

Genetic, Ecological, Behavioral And Geographic Differentiation Of Populations In A Thistle Weevil: Implications For Speciation And Biocontrol, I Olivieri, Mc Singer, S Magalhães, A Courtiol, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Because weevils are used as biocontrol agents against thistles, it is important to document and understand host shifts and the evolution of host-specificity in these insects. Furthermore, such host shifts are of fundamental interest to mechanisms of speciation. The mediterranean weevil Larinus cynarae normally parasitizes either one of two thistle genera, Onopordum and Cynara, being locally monophagous. In Sardinia, however, both host genera are used. We used three types of data to help understand this complex host use: (i) weevil attack rates on the two host genera among 53 different populations in Sardinia and nearby Corsica, (ii) host preference in …

A Neuroanatomically Grounded Hebbian-Learning Model Of Attention-Language Interactions In The Human Brain., Max Garagnani, Thomas Wennekers, Friedemann Pulvermüller
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Meaningful familiar stimuli and senseless unknown materials lead to different patterns of brain activation. A late major neurophysiological response indexing 'sense' is the negative component of event-related potential peaking at around 400 ms (N400), an event-related potential that emerges in attention-demanding tasks and is larger for senseless materials (e.g. meaningless pseudowords) than for matched meaningful stimuli (words). However, the mismatch negativity (latency 100-250 ms), an early automatic brain response elicited under distraction, is larger to words than to pseudowords, thus exhibiting the opposite pattern to that seen for the N400. So far, no theoretical account has been able to reconcile …

Women's Colposcopy Experience And Preferences: A Mixed Methods Study., Dawn R. Swancutt, Sheila M. Greenfield, Sue Wilson
Peninsula Medical School
BACKGROUND: The colposcopy service is a key component in the UK Cervical Screening Programme. Over 120,000 women are referred to the service annually, however up to 25% of women fail to attend their appointment. Little is known about patients' preferences for colposcopic investigation and treatment. This study aims to investigate women's experience of colposcopy, to identify patients' preferences for aspects of appointments within the colposcopy service, and to make suggestions for service improvement. METHODS/DESIGN: This study has been designed as a two stage, mixed method project. Stage one will involve in-depth interviews with new colposcopy patients to ascertain their experience …

Young People's Geographies In Rural Post-Socialist Germany: A Case Study In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Nadine Daniela Schafer
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
An increasing interest in young people's rural lives can be registered within social sciences. However, only a very limited amount of research has been conducted in the context of post-socialist countries even though rural young people are described as one of the groups most severely affected by declining standards of welfare and by the rise of socio-economic inequalities in post-socialist communities (see Brake & Buchner 1996; McAuley 1995; Kollmorgen 2003). This thesis aims to address this gap by analysing the way rural young people in the East German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern perceive and negotiate structural disadvantages. It follows a wider …

Doing Policing : An Inquiry Into The Rhetorical And Argumentative Skills Of The Police, Nicholas John Lynn
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
This thesis examines the spoken and written discourse of uniformed British police officers. Utilising a rhetorical and discursive analysis, the study considers firstly how officers use their considerable powers of discretion to deal informally with crime and criminal incidents. Focusing on a form of discretion that the police refer to as cuffing, two specific discursive practices were identified as being used by police to informally resolve crime: these were the giving of suitable advice and the that's civil device. The second part of the study was concerned with the formal prosecution process and how officers construct prosecution case files. Specifically, …
Locomotor Patterns And Persistent Activity In Self-Organizing Neural Models, Thomas Henry Cooke
Locomotor Patterns And Persistent Activity In Self-Organizing Neural Models, Thomas Henry Cooke
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The thesis investigates principles of self-organization that may account for the observed structure and behaviour of neural networks that generate locomotor behaviour and complex spatiotemporal patterns such as spiral waves, metastable states and persistent activity. This relates to the general neuroscience problem of finding the correspondence between the structure of neural networks and their function. This question is both extremely important and difficult to answer because the structure of a neural network defines a specific type of neural dynamics which underpins some function of the neural system and also influences the structure and parameters of the network including connection strengths. …
