Rewarding Excellent Teaching: The Translation Of A Policy Initiative In The United Kingdom, Rebecca Turner, David Gosling Jan 2012

Rewarding Excellent Teaching: The Translation Of A Policy Initiative In The United Kingdom, Rebecca Turner, David Gosling

Plymouth Institute of Education

The need to provide more significant rewards for ‘teaching excellence’ in order to provide parity of status with research in higher education has often been asserted. This paper examines ways in which the idea of rewarding excellent teaching has been understood and translated within a large teaching and learning initiative that was overtly based on rewarding and recognising excellent teaching. The initiative studied here, was the formation of 74 Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, established by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 2004.The findings are based on research that traced the ‘translation’ of this policy aim in …

Novel Etomidate Derivatives, J. Robert Sneyd Jan 2012

Novel Etomidate Derivatives, J. Robert Sneyd

More Faculty of Health Research

Etomidate is a well established intravenous anaesthetic agent which has been widely used. Recognised limitations of the agent include adrenocortical suppression, myoclonus and post-operative nausea and vomiting, PONV. MOC-etomidate, carboetomidate and MOC-carboetomidate are novel etomidate derivatives. Their preclinical data and their potential for human administration are critically reviewed. 'Soft' pharmacology (rapid ester hydrolysis) limits the duration of action of MOC-etomidate and MOC-carboetomidate giving them rapid offset after administration is discontinued. Adrenocortical depression is minimised either by ester hydrolysis or by structural change to the etomidate molecule. Potential limitations include the yet to be determined incidence of myoclonus and PONV if …

Randomized Controlled Trial Of Intraoperative Goal-Directed Fluid Therapy In Aerobically Fit And Unfit Patients Having Major Colorectal Surgery, C. Challand, R. Struthers, J. R. Sneyd, P. D. Erasmus, N. Mellor, K. B. Hosie, G. Minto Jan 2012

Randomized Controlled Trial Of Intraoperative Goal-Directed Fluid Therapy In Aerobically Fit And Unfit Patients Having Major Colorectal Surgery, C. Challand, R. Struthers, J. R. Sneyd, P. D. Erasmus, N. Mellor, K. B. Hosie, G. Minto

More Faculty of Health Research

Background: Intraoperative fluid therapy regimens using oesophageal Doppler monitoring (ODM) to optimize stroke volume (SV) (goal-directed fluid therapy, GDT) have been associated with a reduction in length of stay (LOS) and complication rates after major surgery. We hypothesized that intraoperative GDT would reduce the time to surgical readiness for discharge (RfD) of patients having major elective colorectal surgery but that this effect might be less marked in aerobically fit patients. Methods: In this double-blinded controlled trial, 179 patients undergoing major open or laparoscopic colorectal surgery were characterized as aerobically 'fit' (n=123) or 'unfit' (n=56) on the basis of their performance …

Counter-Surveillance, Protest And Policing, Dean Wilson Jan 2012

Counter-Surveillance, Protest And Policing, Dean Wilson

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This paper, based upon 17 semi-structured interviews with individuals involved in video activism, examines the growing importance of visually documenting protest events for both activists and police organizations. It is argued that while visual recordings of protest events by activists may be useful in terms of securing safety, dissuading instances of police violence and in providing evidence against police misconduct, there are also unintended negative consequences of video-activism. These negative consequences include selfincrimination, the promotion of spirals of surveillance whereby the police video protestors, and the removal (at times with disproportionate force) of activists with recording devices from protest events …

A Court Of Law Or A Court Of Conscience: A Critique Of The Decision In Re A (Children), Laura Offer Jan 2012

A Court Of Law Or A Court Of Conscience: A Critique Of The Decision In Re A (Children), Laura Offer

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article critiques the legal reasoning adopted by the Court of Appeal in Re A (Children) – the controversial case which addressed the separation of conjoined twins Rose and Grace Attard (or 'Mary and Jodie'). Separation would ensure survival for Jodie and death for Mary; as such, the Court of Appeal was required to consider whether separation constituted murder or whether it was justifiable as a protective measure for Jodie. In this article, the author examines the separate lines of reasoning adopted by each of the three judges in Re A, explores the precedents used to justify separation, discusses the …

Trying To Get A Good One' Bigamy Offences In England And Wales, 1850-1950, David Cox Jan 2012

Trying To Get A Good One' Bigamy Offences In England And Wales, 1850-1950, David Cox

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

Bigamy has attracted little attention from both criminologists and historians in the past few decades. This is perhaps understandable, as bigamy is an uncommon crime, no longer regarded as a major threat to the institution of marriage or familial stability, as divorce laws have made it much easier for couples to legally separate, and co-habitation outside marriage is much more common than in pre-World War II England and Wales. 2 However, this has not always been the case; before men and women could divorce on equal terms and without blame being apportioned, bigamy was seen as one way in which …

A recent high profile incident has reinstated the issue as a worldwide public concern and provides context for this article.

Electronic Payment Systems, Samahir Abdulah Jan 2012

Electronic Payment Systems, Samahir Abdulah

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

Electronic commerce online is expanding at an exponential rate. Much of this relates to the type of consumer transactions which would otherwise have been fulfilled in the market using one of electronic funds transfer at the point of sale devices (EFT-POS), such as cheque cards, debit cards, credit cards or debit cards. The legal consequences of the use of the cards are based on the contract between the card issuer and the card holder. Without exception, these contracts will be standard form, on the issuer's provisions. The Consumer Credit Act 1974 (CCA) is considered the main source of statutory regulation …

The Governance Of Security In The Revanchist City- The Case Of Cape Town, South Africa, Till Frederik Paasche Jan 2012

The Governance Of Security In The Revanchist City- The Case Of Cape Town, South Africa, Till Frederik Paasche

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The governance of security in the revanchist city- The case of Cape Town, South Africa Much has been written on the revanchist city (for example Smith, 1996; MacLeod, 2002; Belina and Helms, 2003) and the reclaiming of space from so-called ‘undesirables‘ through the means of the police. Here, the guiding ideas are policing strategies such as the ‘broken windows syndrome‘ (Kelling and Wilson, 1982) and ‘zero tolerance policing‘ (Giuliani and Bratton, 1994; Beckett and Herbert, 2008; Herbert and Beckett, 2010). However, the role of private security companies in the reclaiming of public space remains under-researched. Using a case study in …

The Effect Of Dietary Chromium(Iii) On Growth And Carbohydrate Utilization In Mirror And Common Carp (Cyprinus Carpio) L., Arafat R. Ahmed

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The aim of feed formulation in aquaculture is to supply a suitable diet that provides nutritional requirements at relatively low cost. Carbohydrates are the most economic energy source for animals compared to protein and lipid; however, fish have limited capacity for dietary carbohydrate utilization. Trivalent chromium is an essential micronutrient for carbohydrate metabolism in vertebrates. The primary objective of this thesis was to enhance understanding of the effects of organic and inorganic forms of Cr on carbohydrate utilization, growth performance, gene expression and activity of specific key liver enzymes in carp Cyprinus carpio. In addition, effects of dietary Cr on …

Epidemiology And Public Health Significance Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Cattle In The Highlands Of Cameroon, Julius Awah Ndukum Jan 2012

Epidemiology And Public Health Significance Of Bovine Tuberculosis In Cattle In The Highlands Of Cameroon, Julius Awah Ndukum

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious neglected zoonosis of cattle that is prevalent but under-investigated in Cameroon, hence this study was designed to assess the epidemiology of bovine TB in cattle, risks for M. bovis infection in cattle and humans; and public health implications of zoonotic bovine TB in the highlands of Cameroon. A retrospective study of meat inspection records (1994 – 2010) was done to estimate the prevalence of TB lesions in slaughtered cattle in the North West region. The prevalence of bovine TB and anti-bovine TB antibodies in live cattle based on tuberculin skin tests (2 surveys) and …

The Effect Of Phytoestrogens On Bone And T Cells Differentiation And Activity, Sahar Saadi Karieb Jan 2012

The Effect Of Phytoestrogens On Bone And T Cells Differentiation And Activity, Sahar Saadi Karieb

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The fall in circulating oestrogen (E2) after the menopause leads to an increased rate of bone remodelling, excessive osteoclast activity and a greater fracture risk. Until recently hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was prescribed to post-menopausal women to prevent bone loss, however HRT is associated with an elevated incidence of cardiovascular disease, stroke and cancer. These side-effects led to an interest in naturally occurring compounds with oestrogenic action such as phytoestrogens (PEs), which are non-steroidal-plant derived compounds. Human trials and animal studies suggest a beneficial effect of PEs on bone mass, although their ability to modify osteoclast formation in response to …

Novel Particle Model For The Prediction Of Stability And Episodic Collapse Of Coastal Cliffs And Levees, Johan Richard Vandamme Jan 2012

Novel Particle Model For The Prediction Of Stability And Episodic Collapse Of Coastal Cliffs And Levees, Johan Richard Vandamme

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis investigates the WCSPH model by considering fluid entry and exit, and integrates the WCSPH method into a new, novel, particle-based Bluff Morphology Model (BMM). Using the BMM, this thesis investigates the stability, collapse and equilibrium position of soft coastal bluffs (cliffs). Fluid and floating object interaction using a novel adaptation of the WCSPH method is investigated by incorporating a floating object model. In particular, this thesis examines the water impact, hydrodynamic forces, fluid motions, and movement of objects in the conventional case studies of object entry and exit from still water. A two-dimensional wedge drop analysis was examined, …

Species Distribution Modelling To Support Marine Conservation Planning, Charlotte Emily Marshall Jan 2012

Species Distribution Modelling To Support Marine Conservation Planning, Charlotte Emily Marshall

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis explores some important practical considerations concerning the use of species distribution models in marine conservation planning. Using geo-referenced gorgonian distribution data, together with explanatory environmental variables, predictive models have been used to map the spatial distribution of suitable gorgonian (sea fan) habitat in two study sites; Hatton Bank, in the Northeast Atlantic, and Lyme Bay on the south coast of Devon. Generalized Linear Models (GLMs), Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) and a Maximum Entropy (Maxent) model have been used to support critical investigation into important model considerations that have received inadequate attention in the marine environment. The influence of …

Molecular Characterisation Of The Interaction Of Microbes With The Insulin Pathway, Raid Bahr Nisr Jan 2012

Molecular Characterisation Of The Interaction Of Microbes With The Insulin Pathway, Raid Bahr Nisr

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Exposure to microorganisms is considered an environmental factor which can contribute to diabetes mellitus via cytotoxicity or autoimmune responses against pancreatic cells. Firstly, the effects on rat insulinoma pancreatic β-cell line of secondary metabolites pyrrolnitrin (Burkholderia spp), phenazine compounds (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia spp) were investigated. Both compounds separately showed significant cytotoxicity after 24 h and at concentrations of 10 & 100 ng/ml potentiated insulin gene transcription, Ca2+ content and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). Furthermore, the outward membrane current was inhibited by phenazine (100 ng/ml) or pyrrolnitrin (10 or 100 ng/ml). Secondly, the capacity of 45 microbial species to bind …

Computational Modelling Of Combined Storm Surge And Wave Overtopping Of Embankments, David K Jones Jan 2012

Computational Modelling Of Combined Storm Surge And Wave Overtopping Of Embankments, David K Jones

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The primary function of seawalls and embankments is to protect against damage and injury caused by flooding. Coastal flooding is caused by combinations of high tides, waves, wind set-up and storm surges driven by low-pressure systems. However with global warming causing sea levels to rise and with increased storminess causing more extreme waves and storm surges, the likelihood of overtopping of seawalls with zero or negative freeboard may well be expected to increase. Researchers using physical and numerical models to develop design formulae have widely investigated wave overtopping of seawalls with positive freeboard. However the design of seawalls with zero …

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Studies were undertaken to determine toxicological effects in a model species, Cyprinus carpio L. following hypoxic exposure either alone or in combination with representative heavy metal (i.e. copper; Cu) via a dietary route, at different levels of biological organisation (viz. biochemical, histological and individual level effects). Initially, the validation study of biological responses using a range of concentrations of dietary Cu as a relevant environmental contaminant was carried out (Chapter 3). The results showed a range of biological responses in exposed fish including significant genotoxic response as determined by induction of DNA strand breaks (i.e. the Comet assay) with bacterial …

Hidden Histories And Multiple Meanings: The Richard Dennett Collection At The Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter., Sara Craig Ayres Jan 2012

Hidden Histories And Multiple Meanings: The Richard Dennett Collection At The Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter., Sara Craig Ayres

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Ethnographic collections in western museums such as the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) carry many meanings, but by definition, they represent an intercultural encounter. This history of this encounter is often lost, overlooked, or obscured, and yet it has bearing on how the objects in the collection have been interpreted and understood. This thesis uncovers the hidden history of one particular collection in the RAMM and examines the multiple meanings that have been attributed to the objects in the collection over time. The Richard Dennett Collection was made in Africa in the years when European powers began to colonise the …

Life Expansion: Toward An Artistic, Design-Based Theory Of The Transhuman / Posthuman, Natasha Vita-More Jan 2012

Life Expansion: Toward An Artistic, Design-Based Theory Of The Transhuman / Posthuman, Natasha Vita-More

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis’ study of life expansion proposes a framework for artistic, design-based approaches concerned with prolonging human life and sustaining personal identity. To delineate the topic: life expansion means increasing the length of time a person is alive and diversifying the matter in which a person exists. For human life, the length of time is bounded by a single century and its matter is tied to biology. Life expansion is located in the domain of human enhancement, distinctly linked to technological interfaces with biology. The thesis identifies human-computer interaction and the potential of emerging and speculative technologies as seeding the …

Image And Evidence: The Study Of Attention Through The Combined Lenses Of Neuroscience And Art, Ellen K. Levy

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This study proposed that new insights about attention, including its phenomenon and pathology, would be provided by combining perspectives of the neurobiological discourse about attention with analyses of artworks that exploit the constraints of the attentional system. To advance the central argument that art offers a training ground for the attentional system, a wide range of contemporary art was analysed in light of specific tasks invoked. The kinds of cognitive tasks these works initiate with respect to the attentional system have been particularly critical to this research. Attention was explored within the context of transdisciplinary art practices, varied circumstances of …

Spectrum Sensing And Cooperation In Cognitive-Ofdm Based Wireless Communications Networks, Owayed A Alghamdi Jan 2012

Spectrum Sensing And Cooperation In Cognitive-Ofdm Based Wireless Communications Networks, Owayed A Alghamdi

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The world has witnessed the development of many wireless systems and applications. In addition to the large number of existing devices, such development of new and advanced wireless systems increases rapidly the demand for more radio spectrum. The radio spectrum is a limited natural resource; however, it has been observed that it is not efficiently utilized. Consequently, different dynamic spectrum access techniques have been proposed as solutions for such an inefficient use of the spectrum. Cognitive Radio (CR) is a promising intelligent technology that can identify the unoccupied portions of spectrum and opportunistically uses those portions with satisfyingly high capacity …
