Believe It Or Not: Examining The Case For Intuitive Logic And Effortful Beliefs, Stephanie Howarth
Believe It Or Not: Examining The Case For Intuitive Logic And Effortful Beliefs, Stephanie Howarth
School of Psychology Theses
The overall objective of this thesis was to test the Default Interventionist (DI) account of belief-bias in human reasoning using the novel methodology introduced by Handley, Newstead & Trippas (2011). DI accounts focus on how our prior beliefs are the intuitive output that bias our reasoning process (Evans, 2006), whilst judgments based on logical validity require effortful processing. However, recent research has suggested that reasoning on the basis of beliefs may not be as fast and automatic as previous accounts claim. In order to investigate whether belief based judgments are resource demanding we instructed participants to reason on the basis …
The Effects Of Ocean Acidification On Modern Benthic Foraminifera, Laura Rachel Pettit
The Effects Of Ocean Acidification On Modern Benthic Foraminifera, Laura Rachel Pettit
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Ocean acidification may cause biodiversity loss, alter ecosystems and impact food security, yet uncertainty over ecological responses to ocean acidification remains considerable. Most work on the impact of ocean acidification on foraminifera has been short-term laboratory experiments on single species. To expand this, benthic foraminiferal assemblages were examined across shallow water CO2 gradients in the Gulf of California, off the islands of Ischia and Vulcano in Italy and off Papua New Guinea. Living assemblages from the Gulf of California did not appear to show a response across a pH range of 7.55 – 7.88, although the species assemblage was impoverished …
One Step Ahead: Investigating The Influence Of Prior Knowledge On The Perception Of Others’ Actions, Toby Nicholson
One Step Ahead: Investigating The Influence Of Prior Knowledge On The Perception Of Others’ Actions, Toby Nicholson
School of Psychology Theses
Historically, a dominant view has been that we understand others by directly matching their actions to our own motor system, emphasising the importance of bottom-up processes during social perception. However, more recent theories suggest that instead we actively anticipate others actions based upon intentions inferred outside of the motor system, from social cues such as language, eye gaze and object information. Across 13 experiments, the established representational momentum paradigm, as well as a cross-modal visuotactile paradigm were employed to test the hypothesis that people’s perceptual processes while observing the actions of others would be affected by such top-down cues about …

Evidence For Distinct Coastal And Offshore Communities Of Bottlenose Dolphins In The North East Atlantic., Machiel G. Oudejans, Fleur Visser, Anneli Englund, Emer Rogan, Simon N. Ingram
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Bottlenose dolphin stock structure in the northeast Atlantic remains poorly understood. However, fine scale photo-id data have shown that populations can comprise multiple overlapping social communities. These social communities form structural elements of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) [corrected] populations, reflecting specific ecological and behavioural adaptations to local habitats. We investigated the social structure of bottlenose dolphins in the waters of northwest Ireland and present evidence for distinct inshore and offshore social communities. Individuals of the inshore community had a coastal distribution restricted to waters within 3 km from shore. These animals exhibited a cohesive, fission-fusion social organisation, with repeated resightings …

Bone-Eating Osedax Worms Lived On Mesozoic Marine Reptile Deadfalls., S Danise, Nd Higgs
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
We report fossil traces of Osedax, a genus of siboglinid annelids that consume the skeletons of sunken vertebrates on the ocean floor, from early-Late Cretaceous (approx. 100 Myr) plesiosaur and sea turtle bones. Although plesiosaurs went extinct at the end-Cretaceous mass extinction (66 Myr), chelonioids survived the event and diversified, and thus provided sustenance for Osedax in the 20 Myr gap preceding the radiation of cetaceans, their main modern food source. This finding shows that marine reptile carcasses, before whales, played a key role in the evolution and dispersal of Osedax and confirms that its generalist ability of colonizing different …

Treatment Of Progressive Multiple Sclerosis: What Works, What Does Not, And What Is Needed., Anthony Feinstein, Jenny Freeman, Albert C. Lo
School of Health Professions
Disease-modifying drugs have mostly failed as treatments for progressive multiple sclerosis. Management of the disease therefore solely aims to minimise symptoms and, if possible, improve function. The degree to which this approach is based on empirical data derived from studies of progressive disease or whether treatment decisions are based on what is known about relapsing-remitting disease remains unclear. Symptoms rated as important by patients with multiple sclerosis include balance and mobility impairments, weakness, reduced cardiovascular fitness, ataxia, fatigue, bladder dysfunction, spasticity, pain, cognitive deficits, depression, and pseudobulbar affect; a comprehensive literature search shows a notable paucity of studies devoted solely …
Uncoupling Protein-2 Attenuates Palmitoleate Protection Against The Cytotoxic Production Of Mitochondrial Reactive Oxygen Species In Ins-1e Insulinoma Cells., Jonathan Barlow, Jensen V Hirschberg, Charles Affourtit
Uncoupling Protein-2 Attenuates Palmitoleate Protection Against The Cytotoxic Production Of Mitochondrial Reactive Oxygen Species In Ins-1e Insulinoma Cells., Jonathan Barlow, Jensen V Hirschberg, Charles Affourtit
School of Biomedical Sciences
High glucose and fatty acid levels impair pancreatic beta cell function. We have recently shown that palmitate-induced loss of INS-1E insulinoma cells is related to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production as both toxic effects are prevented by palmitoleate. Here we show that palmitate-induced ROS are mostly mitochondrial: oxidation of MitoSOX, a mitochondria-targeted superoxide probe, is increased by palmitate, whilst oxidation of the equivalent non-targeted probe is unaffected. Moreover, mitochondrial respiratory inhibition with antimycin A stimulates palmitate-induced MitoSOX oxidation. We also show that palmitate does not change the level of mitochondrial uncoupling protein-2 (UCP2) and that UCP2 knockdown does not …

Correlates Of Rarity In Uk Bumblebee (Bombus Spp.) Populations, Sarah Elizabeth Rustage
Correlates Of Rarity In Uk Bumblebee (Bombus Spp.) Populations, Sarah Elizabeth Rustage
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The decline of bumblebee (Bombus spp.) populations in the UK and worldwide has been well reported. It has been generally assumed that such declines result in the genetic impoverishment of some species, potentially leading to reduced fitness and increased extinction risk. This study tested the fundamental assumption linking population fragmentation with fitness, in a model system of two Bombus species native to the UK. Bombus monticola has declined significantly in range across the UK in recent years and occupies fragmented upland areas, while Bombus pratorum has remained abundant and widespread over many habitat types. The effects of genetic diversity on …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Ocean acidification is thought to be a major threat to coral reefs: laboratory evidence and CO2 seep research has shown adverse effects on many coral species, although a few are resilient. There are concerns that cold-water corals are even more vulnerable as they live in areas where aragonite saturation (Ωara ) is lower than in the tropics and is falling rapidly due to CO2 emissions. Here, we provide laboratory evidence that net (gross calcification minus dissolution) and gross calcification rates of three common cold-water corals, Caryophyllia smithii, Dendrophyllia cornigera, and Desmophyllum dianthus, are not affected by pCO2 levels expected for …

Investigation Of The Risks Of Entry And Spread Of Bvd In Herds Participating In A Regional Bvd Control Programme In The South West, Rebecca Mary Butland
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) is estimated to cost the UK cattle industry £40 million annually, the third most costly disease facing the agricultural industry. BVD produces a range of symptoms in cattle including scouring, pneumonia, poor fertility, reduced growth rates and lowered milk yields. The most common route of transmission is through persistently infected (PI) animals shedding the virus to other cattle. PI animals can only develop pre-partum when the BVD virus crosses the placenta from the dam to the foetus. If infection occurs during the first 110 to 150 days of gestation, the foetus is immune-incompetent and the lymphocytes …

Relationships Between Iron, Oxidative Stress, Glycated Proteins And The Development Of Atherosclerosis In Type 2 Diabetes, Husam O. Dakhil Aljwaid
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Hyperglycaemia stimulates a variety of biochemical abnormalities. The area of particular interest in this study is the influence of non-enzymatic glycation of proteins on iron homeostasis, and particularly on non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) and its possible relation to atherogenesis in both Type 2 diabetic and obese non diabetic subjects. The link between non-enzymatic glycation of proteins and iron homeostasis, and development of macrovascular disease may be mechanistically different in Type 2 diabetic and obese non diabetic subjects due to a difference in the protein glycation pattern. Because the following in vivo study required storage of samples for up to two years …
Assessing The Effects Of Long-Term Ocean Acidification On Benthic Communities At Co2 Seeps, Cecilia Baggini
Assessing The Effects Of Long-Term Ocean Acidification On Benthic Communities At Co2 Seeps, Cecilia Baggini
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Ocean acidification has the potential to profoundly affect marine ecosystems before the end of this century, but there are large uncertainties on its effects on temperate benthic communities. Volcanic CO2 seeps provide an opportunity to examine and improve our understanding of community responses to ocean acidification. In this thesis, two Mediterranean CO2 seeps (Methana in Greece and Vulcano in Italy) were used to investigate the responses of macroalgae and their epifaunal communities to increased CO2. Changes in plant-herbivore interactions at elevated CO2, as well as adaptation potential of dominant macroalgae and responses of macroalgae and epifauna to concurrent exposure to …

Experiment one revealed fishmeal (FM) replacement with soy protein concentrate (SPC) alone, and in combination with pea protein concentrate (PPC) and saponins (S) modulated the intestinal bacterial communities of D. labrax, increasing the presence of lactic acid bacteria. Intestinal histology revealed significantly reduced goblet cell’s (GC’s) in fish fed the SPC+S, epithelial microvilli densities (MD) in fish fed the SPC+PPC, SPC+PPC+S and SPC+S after two weeks feeding. Significant reductions in GC’s and intraepithelial leukocytes (IEL’s) in fish fed the SPC+S, and MD’s in fish fed the SPC+S and SPC+PPC+S after four weeks feeding, relative to fish fed the FM control. …

Managing The Retreat: Understanding The Transition To Salt Marsh In Coastal Realignment Projects, Anissia White
Managing The Retreat: Understanding The Transition To Salt Marsh In Coastal Realignment Projects, Anissia White
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Managed realignment is now widely seen as an important part of coastal management strategy, as an environmentally sustainable, cost-effective alternative to traditional, hard defences. However, the trajectory of salt marsh development in managed realignment schemes remains uncertain and it is unclear how sites should be managed to fulfil both coastal defence and biodiversity objectives. In this study, the overarching aim is to find out ways in which we can create salt marshes that are self-sustaining and function as closely to natural ecosystems as possible, by considering the linked biogeomorphological processes in salt marsh ecosystems. Such an approach will improve predictions …

The Gastrointestinal Uptake Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles: Studies On Caco-2 Cells, Perfused Intestine And In Vivo Dietary Intake In The Rat (Rattus Norvegicus), Constantinos Gitrowski
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The use of nanomaterials (NMs) in orally ingestible products raises concerns about potential hazards. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles (of which some are incidentally produced at the nanoscale) are used in cosmetics, biological remediation (photo-catalysis), toothpastes, ingestible pharmaceuticals and food products. The increased surface area to mass ratio of nanoparticles (NPs) potentially makes them more biologically reactive than their coarser (bulk) material counterparts. There is limited data available on the uptake kinetics across the mammalian gastrointestinal tract, and the potential hazard posed to humans. In this study, the uptake and accumulation of TiO2 (nano and bulk) into and across the human …
